The David City Banner reports an announced project to build a new elevator with a 25000 bushel capacity on the site of the Uhlmann Grain company elevator. The existing fifty year old structure will be torn down.
Thursday marked the 84th birthday of A B Shorty Ross a longtime Central City merchant An informal open house at the Ross McIlnay company store hosted by his partners and staff drew friends and fellow businessmen from the area for coffee and cake.
Earl W. Roth, who left Sutton driving a stolen Plymouth from Art's Garage, was captured in Quincy Washington by the FBI. He had travelled widely including a trip to California and was reported in Omaha and Kansas Sutton News during his flight.
A gas cylinder near a heater exploded at Lee's Refrigeration Service last Thursday. Owner Lee Crounse escaped through a window with no serious injuries as walls bulged and smoke and flame caused damage.
Colfax County Call reports a striping crew will paint a broken white line across the Platte river bridge south of Schuyler replacing unsatisfactory solid lines used in the past.
Miss Gloria Hruban, daughter of Mr and Mrs M J Hruban, was selected Tuesday to represent Central City as a candidate for Princess Nebraska. Five contestants vied at a Grand Island VFW sponsored dance, with the Grand Island entry winning while Central City supported by the Republican group.
Dr James E Lewis will go to Denver next Saturday February 4 to appear before the army examining board and undergo physical examinations as preparation for resuming army duty. He will return to Scotia until he is called to active duty according to the Scotia Register.
Since 1880 the county’s farm count fell to 1,223 by 1945 while average farm size rose to 255 acres. More than half of the farms were rented, according to Sutton News.
H F Gorhan longtime vice president and cashier of Rising City Farmers State Bank sold his controlling interest to H H Whitaker of Paola Kansas. The transfer was announced to the David City Banner and connects two small town banking figures.
The County Farm Bureau held its annual meeting at the school auditorium last Tuesday evening with strong attendance. Charles Marshall delivered the principal address urging cooperation among farmers and groups to foster friendship, and the March of Dimes sponsors raised county funds by $20.15 through a special offering.
The Farmers Union Co operative Gas and Oil Association of Polk County held its 23rd annual meeting January 28 1950 at Osceola High School Auditorium with strong shareholder turnout. Kurtz May discussed a new Co operative Radio Station to be built in Lexington Nebraska. The association reported 1949 sales of 297 167 30 up from 1948 and a net savings of 17 217 36 to be divided. Lunch was provided by Lutheran Ladies Aid and cigars and candy bars by Osceola First National Bank.
The March of Dimes drive is extended to February 4, 1950. Contributions are lagging behind 1949 figures as National State and County polio funds near exhaustion. Rural areas show strong support but city areas are urged to meet their quotas, with Mr Anderson as Rural Chairman reporting progress toward a $1000 target.
The Beulah Cemetery Society plans a February 10 meeting at Mrs. Dee Hastings home with Mrs. Floyd Headlee assisting. Mrs. Flossie Deeds welcomes her son Orlo and his wife and child from Central City. Orlo attends Central College in Central City majoring in journalism, visiting on Sunday with his family.
Adolph Kresha Sr died Wednesday morning at St Francis hospital after a week as patient. Funeral services set for Saturday morning February 4 at 10 at St Andrews Church north of Osceola. Obituary to run next week.
I Samuelson, a longtime Polk business man, died Tuesday evening at his sister's Stromsburg home after a week of illness at Stromsburg hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Friday at the First Baptist Church in Polk, with Rev. Edick Anderson presiding and Rev. W. G. Hoimberg assisting.
Otto Fleming, about 61, died very suddenly Saturday night January 28 after becoming ill and dialing for a physician. He was dead on the physician’s arrival. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Kepner Funeral Home.
The Farmers Co op Grain Company held its annual meeting last Tuesday at IOOF Hall with good attendance. Officers will be elected at the next board meeting. Board includes Herman Anderson George Inness Horace McKeag Elton Berck and Martin Jones with Raymond Sedlak as manager.
The public sale of Edick Anderson, originally set for January 25, is postponed due to weather. The sale will be held February 6 at 12:30 PM with the same items and location described as one mile west and three and three quarters miles north of Polk or six miles south of Clarks.
Mr Clinton Peterson and wife plus daughter of Wausa spent the weekend with his brother in law Marlin Johnson and family.
Polk County bought 778 310 in U S Savings Bonds in 1949 led by series E accounts 71 percent of state purchases totaling about 106 million dollars for the year. Bondholder payments reached 54 780 000 including principal and interest on matured A B C D bonds and redeemed D E bonds.
Mrs. Phoebe Hope, 85, died Tuesday morning at home. Funeral services are set for 2 30 p m Friday at Kepner Funeral Home. She is survived by daughter Mrs. Floyd West, son Charles, and brother Charles Lowe who had lived with her before moving to a Rest Home.

Dr and Mrs Harley S Eklund announced the marriage of their daughter Joann to Lloyd O Hoffman Jr at a January wedding in Omaha. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Louis M Holm with 200 guests attending a buffet reception at the Omaha Athletic Club.
The public sale of Verner Beckstrom will be held at the farm 2½ miles south of Clarks to Prairie Island road and up Prairie Island road 2 miles. It starts at 1:00 PM on February 9 with 17 Holstein cows and heifers, eight calves, seven hogs, and a large list of farm machinery. Merrick and Noble are the auctioneers and the Bank of Clarks will clerk the sale.
The Nebraska Horse Clubs Association held its first meeting of the year at Kearney on January 29. Lee Gillan of Central City was elected President with Mrs. Lee Gillan as secretary and Dr. G. A. Ackerman of Lincoln as vice president. The association donated $25 to the Polio Fund. Platte Valley Saddle Club was represented by Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCauley, with Harry McCauley serving as local reporter.
PEO meets Thursday with Dorothy Campbell. NBBO hosts Friday evening for Mrs. L. E. Hanson. Entre Nous gathers Wednesday February 8 with Mrs. Ella Derson. Maple Leaf Club meets Thursday February 9 with Mrs. Calmer Dunn. Faye Wyman serves as program leader.
Jimmie Krance welcomed his boyhood friend Clayton L Holm visiting Omaha. Holm serves as manager of Mator Transport Co in Ethiopia and has spent the past three years there.
Mr and Mrs E J Mattison of Omaha announce the engagement of their daughter Phylis to Rodney Moss son of Mrs C C Moss of Oakdale Miss Mattison a University of Nebraska graduate teaches at Osceola high school He is also a Nebraska graduate and a graduate student at Indiana University member of Sigma Xi Phi Lambda Upsilon and the American Chemical Society The wedding is planned for June.
Miss Ramona Swanson daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Swanson Osceola and Wilmer A Johnson son of Carl A Johnson Stromsburg were married Wednesday evening January 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church Lincoln The double ring ceremony was conducted by Rev F Worthmann The bride wore a blue suit with black accessories and a corsage of sweetheart roses They were attended by Mr and Mrs Vernon Swanson Lincoln, the bride’s brother and sister-in-law The couple will live on a farm southwest of Stromsburg
Mrs Orley Conkling hosted a surprise party for Nellie Benson with 12 attendees and two birthday cakes. Ted Wyman celebrated his 21st birthday with seven couples at their home and canasta. Joan Omachi visited from Omaha for a weekend. Mrs Lillian Egelhoff left for Denver after a two week visit. No school due to storm and bad roads. Rebekah Kensington gathering planned by Mrs Lloyd Wamsley. Osceola callers visited. Mrs Robert Sigler admitted to St Francis Hospital for medical care.
The County Basketball tourney will be held in Osceola at the school gymnasium Wednesday and Thursday February 8 and 9. Shelby Stromsburg Polk and Osceola will field both first and second teams with pairings drawn from a hat. Wednesday features four games and Thursday hosts finals with Ed Schnabel and Bob Ferris officiating and L. I. Hanson as manager. Admission 60 and 30 cents.
