Nebraska changes No 16 to 92 an extension of the Iowa Illinois route. The new No 92 will soon become a federal highway, offering the shortest east to west cross state route. Regrading and oil mat surfacing are planned west of St Paul.
J R Burgess of Silver Creek and Mrs Esther Maurer of Silver Creek married January 27 in Houston Texas after a January 23 departure with Mr and Mrs Adam Luft of Osceola Their trip included visits to Enid Oklahoma and a seafood dinner in a gulf pier cafe They plan a wedding dance within two weeks and invite friends and enemies. Osceola backs Dawes Colts baseball team Dawes to manage Osceola Polk County League entry with Dawes receiving club equipment and treasury, Albert Timm named coach.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Peterson announce the birth of a nine pound son Jerry Rex born Thursday February 2. Maurice Frizell was released from Osceola Hospital and returned home near Silver Creek. Gus Zang was transferred to Methodist Hospital in Omaha for surgery. Joe Daker remains improving at this time. Mrs. Jack Foster has returned home after a brief hospital stay. Mrs. Verner Johanson returned home Friday after a major operation last week.
James Shemek 44 of Duncan died at 7 30 p m Sunday at the U S Veterans hospital in Lincoln after six months as a patient. Services were held at St Stanislaus Catholic church with burial in the parish cemetery. Hartman Post 84 American Legion conducted military rites. A World War I veteran, he served with Company K 355th Infantry at Camp Funston until discharge.
The Polk County Teachers Institute meets in Osceola High School Assembly Room on Saturday February 11 starting at 9:00. Prof. C. T. Ryan leads sessions on English teaching and writing, Mrs Edna Shores and Edna Jackson lead art and character education, Miss Olive McBeth presents Looking Forward, and a County Women’s Chorus performs. Luncheon served at the Presbyterian Church. demonstrations by Districts 21 28 37. Public invited to all sessions.
The Stoner Club plans a meeting next Wednesday February 15 at Mae Scholz home with Sue Cook as assistant hostess and Mabel Thompson as program lead er. Nearby visits include families from Gresham Fremont and Osceola with several members noted in events and birthdays.
The 1939 Nebraska Pasture- Forage-Livestock Program begins with county agent district conferences in February. Howard L. Peterson attends York session February 13. Sponsors include the Nebraska College of Agriculture Extension Service, Nebraska Crop Growers' Association, Omaha Chamber of Commerce, and Nebraska Livestock Breeders' Association. Polk County had 35 cooperators last year and a community banquet.
The church runs Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. led by Elton Berck, with 11:00 a.m. worship. A special service for Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, junior and senior leagues, and a Leadership Training Course are on the evening agenda. Lincoln Penny drive supports the student pastor at the state university. A prayer service committee lists Ms Lulu Hendrickson through Friday. A covered dish supper honors Arvid Peterson and family, relocating soon. Pastor A C Monkman.
Mrs Erika Headman spent last Thursday with daughter Mrs Floyd Headlee and family in Osceola. A group gathered at Mrs Elizabeth Rud een's Monday evening to celebrate Miss Sven Rudeen's birthday. Guests included Mrs Carl Anderson and daughters Lucille Wallin Anna Lorena Hazel and Margaret Sundberg. Mrs M Frisbie and daughter Margaret of Elgin visited Donald Frisbie's family Sunday and Monday. Charlotte Ekstrand's children and grandchildren gathered Sunday. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Emil Strom Lincoln Mr and Mrs G E Ekstrand and family Mr and Mrs Earl Steever and family and Mr and Mrs Reuben Jones and family. Mrs Sterling Nelson and son Gary visited Mrs Robert Stohl Friday in Osceola. George Malek and children of Osceola were entertained at Arthur Hultquist's home Thursday night for the fifth birthday of Hultquist twins Helen and Harriet. Leo V Carlson and Kenneth Nelson left Tuesday for a monthlong southern vacation, visiting New Orleans and other southern spots. Ed Fey of Unadilla and Hattie Newcomer of Osceola visited at Tom Kries' Sunday afternoon.
Lutheran Church notes announce the Augustana Synod Young People National Youth Conference at Immanuel Deaconess Institute in Omaha with a 300 voice choir cantata at 3 PM and a keynote by Dr. Gould Wickey. Other week events include Sexagesima Sunday services, Sunday School themes, teacher meetings, and choir practices led by Rev. John Oberg.
A Polk County Taxpayers League mee ting is set for February 15 1939 at 2 p m in the Court House. A report of the Audit Survey of Polk County expenses for the past year will be read and other important matters discussed. Mrs C E Casselberry hosted a tea for thirteen. Dorothy Gondringer visited Lincoln with cousin Margaret Fillinger. Firefighters aided a stubble fire on Engelhart farm near Shelby, no damage.
Friends and relatives celebrated Amanda Anderson's birthday at her Fairview home with a late lunch after Chinese checkers. Rev John Lohr of Grand Island visited the Dake home. Lawrence and Mrs Arthur Timm honored at a birthday party with family and friends including the Sarrows and Jones families. Emma Beltzer of Osceola stayed with H A McCormick. A surprise party for Hattie Lucas drew C E Norris the Ray Morris families and Francis Pottington of Silver Creek with ice cream and cake late. Mina Buchta hosted Ladies Aid covered dish lunch. Pete Liss became father to a ten pound boy born January 26. Mrs George Mace’s birthday was celebrated with a surprise dinner by Rolla and Boyd Mace and families, and Grace Runquist and Carl Hansen with families. H H Society to meet February 16 at the community hall hosted by Clara Frizzle and Grace Buchta.
Polk County forestry club leaders attend a training session on Tuesday February 14 at 1 30 PM led by Earl Maxwell Junior Extension Forester. Free trees are available to clubs organized before February 15. Plans are set for county and state fair exhibits. Leaders listed include Frank Bard Osceola Louis Willits Clarks Dorthea Bond Gresham and Mrs James McMeekin Shelby.
Supt L E Wilson was re elected head of Osceola Public Schools at the regular board meeting Monday evening. Salary set at 1750 dollars per year an increase of 150. Action on other faculty elections postponed until March.
Miss Mae Grossnicklaus and Paul Berggren were married Thursday February 2 at the Stromsburg Methodist parsonage with Rev. Homer B. Hix officiating. Attendants were Nadine Croisant and Raymond Grossnicklaus. The couple will reside on a farm near Stromsburg after a six o'clock dinner at the bride's parents' home.
Hackberry Greens Chapel Ladies Aid meets with hosts Mrs. Torell and Mrs. Hennings leading a demonstration. Liberty Local 573 FECA gathers Friday with lunch served by Mrs. Hollis ter and committee. Jolly Workers Extension Club to meet February 15 at Mrs. Walter Twarling’s home with Mrs. Kindburg assisting. Several local families host and attend events including church choir, neighborhood visits, and a farewell for Leslie Carlson on transfer to Denver.
A secret ballot by the band committee produced 68 votes in favor of Sunday afternoon concerts at the city park instead of Wednesday night. The committee recommended city financing. last year the city gave $150 for Wednesday concerts and the club contributed 50.
A. Reece of Osceola was elected Commander of the Polk county American Legion at the Osceola Legion Hall last Thursday evening. Alvin Bodine of Stromsburg was chosen County Adjutant. Dinner for about 75 was by the Osceola Auxiliary. State Commander Robert Waring spoke on Americanism and District Commander Cash Reynolds of Fremont commented on membership.
The local Boy Scout troop postponed its parents night after a Wednesday plan. The group continues with Thursday afternoon school assembly demonstration, a Saturday Live Expo from 1 30 to 4 30 p m on Osceola streets, and Sunday a joint service with Camp Fire Girls at 11 00.
Farmers and friends gather for the annual Farm ers Fun Feed a 6 30 p m Tuesday at Scott s Hall. It is a covered dish Valentine party with a Rural County Chorus song program and talks on REA value to Polk County farmers Livestock Loss Prevention demonstrations reports on Organized Agriculture and Schools for Rural America by county and state officials.
Polk county farmers may obtain Clarke McNary seedling stock from the Farm Bureau office. With windbreak losses in recent years, demand for evergreen and broadleaf trees is expected to rise. Extension Service distributes the seedlings. moisture conservation and wider spacing are advised for windbreaks and woodlots. To date 2200 trees have been ordered. Under the 1939 ACP program eligible growers can earn 10.50 dollars per acre by planting Clarke McNary trees.
At Gordon Fredrickson's home last Wednesday the High Prairie district youths voted to pursue forestry and sheep projects this year. Sheep Club officers: President Robert Willits, Vice President Irvin Forss, Secretary Myron E Samuelson, News Reporter Clarence Bolton.
