Polk County note lists Justus H. LaMunyon and Tom LaMunyon in Navy and radio service, with other area men in the Army and Navy. Reports on prisoners, hospital stays, transfers to training stations, and local family letters from Osceola to Blue Springs, Chadron, and Portmouth, plus a sudden Carl S. Johnson death and a juror list for February.
The Polk County Medical Society promotes National Social Hygiene Day on February 7. Across Nebraska 13 000 gonorrhea and syphilis cases were reported in 1944, with many counties unreported. Omaha plans an all day event while Lincoln stages meetings as part of an educational campaign for wartime health.

Mrs Elmer Allinder underwent major surgery Thursday morning and is progressing nicely. Mrs Ed Sam Johnson was taken to the hospital last Wednesday seriously ill and will return home the end of this week. Mrs Clifford Huddleston of Shelby is a medical patient this week. Mrs Carl Cederberg had her tonsils removed Saturday morning. Mr and Mrs Harold Cockson are the parents of a boy born Saturday February 3rd. He has been named Harold Frances. August Thelen of Shelby is a patient this week. Mrs Bob Watkins, Mrs Frank Gabel of Shelby and Jerry Quick who had undergone surgery, returned to their homes over the weekend.
The Home Service Tractor Club of York County met at the Bills home. Duane Sterner demonstrated filter and air cleaning. Six members attended and a lunch was served. The next meeting is set for February 23 at BE Klingsporn’s home.
R D Anderson returns to Sioux City after visit with Clement Anderson. Hultquist twins Helen and Harriet celebrate 11th birthdays with family and friends. Local residents host and visit relatives in York Osceola and Fort Leavenworth. Real estate sale reported as O D Graves sells east Stromsburg home for 6000 dollars.
Crouse-Tex Drug Co promotes Panamin and Avi-Tab as additional minerals tonics and vitamins for poultry feed to boost egg production and health.
Farm account cooperators may receive help with book summaries at an assistance meeting on February 13 or 14. Cooperators will be notified of details and locations.
The 4-H County Committee met at the Extension Office to organize activities for 1945 including a Timely Topic Contest in February, Judging and Demonstration Day with an adjoining county, and a countywide picnic during the fair. Attendees included Arthur Deeter, Mrs. Clarence Carlson, Mrs. Edgar Wisely, Eva Bute, and J Carder Throckmorton, among others. Organized Agriculture events at Lincoln February 1 and 2 drew strong attendance with housing and labor saving exhibits.
The first Polk County Soil Conservation District directors met at the Extension Office in Osceola. Attendees included Ray Brigham Bruce Anderson George Bond and Maurice Lindberg with H A Millen and Mr Marquardt from the State Committee. County Commissioners arranged space for the District Technician and assistants.
Over two weeks Stromsburg suffered robberies at Elmquist auto repair shop where about 400 dollars in tools were stolen by padlock entry and at C F Moore home where watches pins rings and bracelets vanished. A liquor store break in was foiled and police say clues are lacking.
Local gathering at the Rol land Ekstrom home honored Mrs Rolland Ekstrom on her birthday. County Superintendent Olive McBeth of Osceola will review The Robe at the Dorcas meeting in Swede Home Saturday at 2 30 p.m. Several families shared Sunday visits and weekday calls across Osceola Central City and Swede Home.
Mr and Mrs Horace McKeag spent Thursday in Fullerton visiting relatives. Several local families hosted or attended gatherings including the Matticks and Glatter households. Cpl Arthur Gabriel recently moved from New Guinea to the Philippines, sending word to his sister Mrs Leonard Hiemer.
District 18 residents travel and visit relatives as listed. Mike Podraza Jr. and Phil Micek visited Bartlett Nebraska for a day on business. Leo Lassek stayed with Cosmier Lassek near Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Smolenski and sons visited Edward Lisko near St. Marys. H A Johansen returned from California after seven weeks. Frances Camp and family visited Mike Reisdorff near Shelby.
Osceola wins final Goldenrod Conference game 32 26 against Silver Creek to seal the championship. Silver Creek defeats the second team 36 22, leaving Osceola undisputed champions.
Miss Mary Rose Schott and Cpl Hubert Girard were wed Feb 5 at Sacred Heart Church Shelby in a double ring ceremony. Rev Kean officiated. The bride wore ivory satin with lace, a fingertip veil, and orange blossom tiara. Guests included out of town relatives from Elk Point, S D. After a three course dinner, the couple planned a honeymoon to Washington before returning to Lincoln where the groom is stationed.
Liberty Local 573 FECU postponed their gathering from Friday evening to the 23rd. Cpl. Douglas Steever called home from Greenville South Carolina thinking it might be his last chance before overseas. 2nd Lt. Maurice Newcomer, son of D. D. Newcomer and Phyllis Nelson, wed in Tulsa Oklahoma last Friday and arrived for a ten day furlough visit.
District 68 notes a Monday off as teacher Miss Gabel attended a relative’s wedding. A visitor named Oscar the white mouse toured the school, brought by Wilfred Bernt who caught it on their place. Miss Rose Staroscik joined Dick Smith to Lincoln to visit his grandmother Mrs. Goodale and returned Friday.
Mrs Mildred Anderson led seventh and eighth graders from Polk Schools on a Wednesday county seat visit to Osceola. They toured the county jail court house and The Osceola Record office watching newspapers printed.
