Osceola and Stromsburg won their Monday games to reach the Polk County basketball tournament finals at Stromsburg. In first teams Osceola beat Shelby 35 to 17 while Stromsburg tied Polk 23 to 23. In second teams Osceola topped Shelby 34 to 12 and Polk fell to Stromsburg 14 to 13.
Miss Blanche Stevens daughter of W A Stevens Polk married David B Sundburg son of Mrs Hannah Sundburg Stromsburg on February 14 in Geneva Nebraska. Rev E R Peterson officiated in a double ring ceremony. The bride wore soldier blue with talisman rosebud corsage and brown accessories. The groom wore dark blue. They plan to live on a farm northeast of Polk after a brief wedding trip.
Funeral services for Mrs James S Jones of Omaha were held at Kepner Funeral Home and she was buried in Osceola cemetery beside her son and her in laws. She was 65 and born December 19 1879 near Henderson Iowa. She married James S Jones June 28 1906 and had five children including Sgt Evan A Jones in the U S Army. She leaves her husband four brothers and her children Francis Kenneth Willis James Jr all of Omaha and Evan A Jones in the army.
At last Wednesday evening caucuses Robert Sigler and Jack Malek were nominated for re election to the city council. School board nominees include Dr H S Eklund Guy F Ball Ivar Oberg and A L Chantry.
A Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue will be at the Courthouse in Osceola February 19 20 and 21 to assist taxpayers file their returns for 1944 and to make an estimate for 1946.
Pfe Louis Morris visits. he returns to Springfield MO hospital for Italian campaign wounds. Air Cadet Richard Smith calls from Biloxi after arriving for training and visiting Gene Cole and Tommy Mickey. Beulah Toline Halc is on leave after Waves Hospital Corps School graduation. Gerald Anderson of Stromsburg reported killed in Germany Sept 29. Philip Waller wounded in France last October awarded Purple Heart and soon discharged from England hospital. Jimmy Hastings transferred from Italy to an infantry division in France. Tech Sergeant Dale Thompson visits Nebraskas Croisant family during furlough. Rev John Herrmann cites son Omer in France promoted to Colonel in charge of food and agriculture. He hopes to trade Eagles for a trip home. wife and two sons await in Washington.
Edward Schnasse Prim. 1c now with Great Lakes Naval Hospital staff. Pvt. Donald Pickett at Ft Benning received paratrooper wings and begins nine weeks of communications and advanced paratroop training before furlough. Russell C. Simonsen promoted to warrant officer with Bronze A for Pearl Harbor action. Lt Bud Deeds returns home for furlough after duties piloting a Mustang in Europe. he spends time with his mother and brother Ervin before resuming naval service.
Lt. Eugene Johnson, a B 17 bomber crew member stationed in Italy, reports a large family celebration after the 301st bombing group reached 400 missions. He notes he has completed seven missions since going overseas.
John Simonsen to hold a farm sale one mile north and one mile west of Shelby on Friday February 23. Includes a complete line of farm machinery and livestock. Watch for bills.
First Lieutenant Richard Malek receives a second Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in many hours of meteorological reconnaissance with B 17 Flying Fortresses. The citation cites hazardous weather and enemy danger. Malek is the son of Mr and Mrs George Malek and has been overseas since last August.
Osceola Bulldogs trailed early then rallied to defeat Silver Creek Kreekteers 32 26 with Kenny Schutt starring in the second half. Luft hit two late threes as Osceola built a lead and closed the game strong.
Polk County will broadcast at 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 17 over KMMJ to share county news. The 4-H Tractor Club reports 22 enrolled with goals to expand into main groups. Milking Shorthorn breeding service planned alongside Holstein Guernsey and Brown Swiss with volume guarantees. Fred Bond cites 63.3 percent conception rate from October 13 to January 17. GMC Animal Husbandry Club led by Elton Berck met recently. Ted Johnsons have two boys joining breeding heifer and swine projects this week.

Cpl Edward Swan writes from an anti tank unit in France to his sister Gerry in January 1945. He describes cold winters, crude war housing, frequent shelling from 88mm guns, and the risk of attack at night. He recalls a near miss with officers, hunting ducks, and longing for mail and small comforts while noting civilians and rationing.

Cpl Floyd Schultz visits Coonleys in Benedict and Clovis NM with wife. Lt Raymond Anderson sends word from Mindoro Philippines in the Air Corps Ordnance division. Olive McBeth visits from Osceola. Sack family spends Sunday with Reed. Nordstrom and sister move to Mae Anderson’s home in California. Newcomers Maurice and family depart Grand Island for California for teaching duties.
A Denver message via United Press to Mrs. Wittig says Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Timm have been released from a Japanese internment camp after capture on Luzon. They had not heard of Lloyd Timm’s father Mark Timm’s death over a year ago, mail having been withheld. The note states they were released this morning from Bili Bid Prison at Manila and are both all right.
District 54 reports Mrs. George Conkling visiting Omaha to see her sister. Mrs. Edward Totenhaupt begins work as office girl for Dr. Anderson and Dr. Minnick at Stromsburg. Edward Schippareit injured an eye when a stick struck it while cutting wood. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wamsley and Annette visited Havens to see the Stohbelin Jacobsen families. Mrs. Sam Wyman hosted the M. E. Ladies Aid. Henry Ely of Rodgers, formerly local, suffered a stroke but is improving. Mrs. Raymind Neilsen and two daughters stay in Osceola for medical care.
District No. 13 resident Helen Wieseman returned to Cheyenne after months with the Johansen family. Families from the district and Hastings joined Ronald Gondringer’s third birthday. Mrs. Joe Schott visited Lincoln over the weekend. Genevieve and Arthur Deeter hosted Sunday dinner at the Throckmorton home. Students enjoyed heart brothers and sisters at school. A Valentine party is planned for Wednesday. Health Contest losers will freeze ice cream at noon. PTA meets Tuesday night February 20.
The Wesley Chapel WSCS met last Thursday at Osceola with Mrs. Charles Olson leading an American Indians lesson. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. August Fischer and Eric Charles Fischer visiting Walter Berck and Irven Rystrom.
Mr and Mrs Guildford Bryan and sons visited the Rayner Carlson home. Walter Gestrine rode in from Texas for a 15 day furlough at his mother Mrs John Gestrine’s. Birthday celebrants at George Heinemeyer’s included the Meacham McCormick Lohr DeBere families.
Linda Sue Hernbloom four day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clifford Hernbloom died at Stromsburg hospital Saturday. Funeral services were at Kepner Funeral Home Sunday with burial in Stromsburg cemetery. Survived by parents and a three year old brother.
Mrs. Hattie Smith underwent an emergency operation Thursday evening and is progressing nicely. Mrs. Smith is connected with the Osceola Hotel. Mrs. Belle Hochkiss fell and broke her hip Monday. She is doing nicely at this time. August Schutt of Columbus underwent major surgery Saturday morning. Mrs. Harold Cockson and infant son returned home Tuesday.
Easy Aces gather February 15 at Mrs. Jack Malek home. Legion Auxiliary postponed to February 23 at Lillian Timm residence. Ride A W ees host at Agnal Peterson’s Friday. Stoner Club meets February 21 at Lois Grossnicklaus home. Osceola Eastern Star Ken sington gathers February 20 at A. L. Chantry residence.
Dist 18 reports show Floyd Peterson and family visiting Palmer for several days while Annie Thompson’s family notes Pfc Marshall arriving safely in Italy. Fundraising of 2.87 dollars for Infantile Paralysis by Dist 18 school. Local visits include Seiz and Darlene near Bellwood, Elliott in Columbus, Bernt home guests, Reisdorff in Shelby, Enyeart eye injury treatment, and Lisko family visitors.
Mr and Mrs Grant Johnson and daughter joined Mrs Carrie Johnson and Archie for dinner at Alda Nebraska in the home of Mr and Mrs Edwin Drewel. Lincoln visitors Mr and Mrs Harry DeFrene stayed with Mr and Mrs Gordon Fredrickson. Several families gathered for Sunday dinner at Lena Johnson s home including Mr and Mrs Martin Lundstrom and daughter Mr and Mrs Grant Willits and daughters and Mr and Mrs Robert Willits and daughters. Mrs Hilma Toline and Mrs Amelia Fredrickson spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Henry Peterson. A group including Mesdames Alfield Franzen Ruby Lundstrom Reuben Swanson David Jones Walter Jones Ellen Anderson and Lily Chindgren planned Junior Missionary work for the Swede Home church at Art Ekstrom s home. Arthur Ekstrom and family were guests at Ewald Pliefke s home Sunday evening.
The AAA calls for a about 30 percent hog production increase in Polk County and extends the hog support price to March 31 1946 at 12.50 per cwt. Chicago butcher hogs 200 to 270 lbs. Farm machinery output to stay near 1944 levels. 20 million more repair parts available and about 10 percent of 1945 machinery to go abroad. Revised 1944 crop acreages require 9 million more acres in 1945. AAA workers exceed Sixth War Bond Loan quota. Much corn graded below No 3 in December. Russia to receive 20 000 tons of U S vegetables and seed for spring planting.
