Leslie Hanshew dies at home after long illness
Leslie Hanshew born December 13 1873 in Polk County died January 31 1954 at age 80 after two years of ill health and near blindness. He married Dollie Kinney October 30 1901 and they had three daughters Thelma Gibbins Clelia Butcher and Verda Mae Hopwood. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Osceola with burial in Osceola cemetery.

The Official Board heard that the building fund began with about $5,000 in fall 1951. Total including receipts and pledges rose to over $55,000. Cash paid to date was $40,106.52 with January 1954 pledges totaling over $1,300. Remaining pledges of $14,893.48 are due by November 1, 1954.

Osceola will host the Class C basketball tournament for a fourth straight year with Clair Walker as tournament director. Motor Division Extends License Tag Deadline nationwide
The Motor Division told county treasurers and patrolmen that license tag deadlines move from February 15 to March 9 at midnight. State officials in metro areas feared delays and now agree on a uniform date. 1953 plates will be honored until midnight March 9, and 1954 plates must be attached by March 10.

Boy Scouts Hold Ice Skating Party at Columbus Park
The Boy Scouts held an ice skating party Thursday evening January 28 at Columbus Park replacing the regular meeting. Scoutmaster Dewey Sigler and W R Kepner accompanied the boys and treated them to ham burgers and hot chocolate on the way home. January Freeze Dominates Osceola Weather Records
The Osceola area saw a bitter January with every day dipping below freezing at some point. A record low of minus 14 degrees occurred on the 21st, and two days stayed under ten degrees for 24 hours. Highs reached only eight and nine degrees on the 16th and 21st, while only three days exceeded 50 degrees, peaking at 58 on the last Sunday.

A Korean War veteran, 25 year old Arthur Henry Bates, confessed to murdering his 21 year old sweetheart Marilyn Gay after a quarrel over a gift. Bates said a drunken impulse led to strangling her before he walked to a bar and asked for police. Marilyn Gay was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Percy Gay.
