New County Judge Merrick to Assume Office Next Week

L. M. Merrick, elected county judge, will take office next week. Mrs. Albert Timm remains deputy county judge. Merrick, born in Polk County, graduated from Osceola High School in 1913 and Lincoln Business College. He previously served as an officer of the Farmer's State Bank and later as secretary of the Polk-Butler Farmer's Insurance Co and Polk Co. Nat Farm Loan Assn. An ex service man and Osceola American Legion member.

Seymour Couple Celebrates 65 Years of Marriage

Mr and Mrs W T Seymour marked their 65th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day. Pioneer Polk County residents married in Alexis Illinois on December 25 1871 they settled southwest of Stromsburg in 1874. Their five children include Mrs Simmi Smith John Seymour Henry Littleton and Mrs Isle. They celebrated quietly at home due to retirement.

Nebraska to Build Student Union Center With Grant Funds

A $180,000 Public Works Administration grant will fund part of a new University of Nebraska student union building, costing $400,000 with $220,000 from student fees. The Alumni Association will contribute $75,000 for furnishings. The campus site at Fourteenth and R Streets was chosen to serve graduate and undergraduate activities with space across three floors including lounges, dining, ballroom, library, and conference rooms. Construction must start by January 11 and finish by January 11, 1938.

Rivoli Theater to Close for Remodeling

The Rivoli theatre will close next Monday night for extensive remodeling. Opening date to be announced locally. During closure the Sun theatre in Shelby will operate Tue Wed Fri Sat Sun with cash nights Tue and Wed. Shows include The Jungle Princess on Jan 5-6.

Number of pensioners shows an increase in aid

Nearly 24,000 elderly persons now receive $16.59 monthly through the state assistance committee, up 50 from a month earlier. About 1,630 applications await action as monthly payments approach $400,000 with roughly half funded by the federal government and the rest from special gasoline and liquor taxes. pressure to raise allowances to $30 a month under federal law likely prompts legislative action.

Kill Crows From Air by Fifty Hunters at Farm

Fifty hunters from Seward, York, Gresham and Thayer used an airplane to chase down crows at the August Ecklund farm near Gresham. Over 1500 crows were killed in about a half hour as planes hovered low. The hunt, organized for sport and pest control, was followed by plans for another round soon.

Mrs Katie Shemek Dies at 68 in Polk County

Mrs Katie Shemek aged 68 died Wednesday morning after a lingering illness at her Polk County home. A resident since 1880 she was sister to John Kula of Silver Creek. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Polish Catholic Church.

The Maple Leaf Club met December 17 at Mrs. Arthur Wieseman home with hostesses Mrs. Earl Bond and Mrs. Henry Schip poreil. A Christmas party included a gift exchange and a program. Special guests were Mrs. Emerson Keebaugh of York and Mrs. Lillian Egelhoff and daughter Irma from Colorado. Next meeting at Mrs. Walter Wieseman's home.
