The writer recalls wandering from Nebraska to Wyoming for a warm Christmas, then waking to a world of white after Christmas. They describe mixed feelings about the season, thank friends for gifts, and extend wishes for a Happy New Year 1955 while noting how Christmas spirit endures with age.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce announced winners in two lighting contests. In Outside Lighting, Dr Wallace Monson took first, W. W. Norton second, James Frieden third, with several honorable mentions. In Window Lighting, H. Jay McDonald won first, Ben Zedicher second, Marlin Johnson third.
Mr and Mrs Melvin Wills and Susanne of Des Moines arrived to be holiday guests of Mrs P C Wiesemary and with Shelby relatives. Christmas dinner guests were Mr and Mrs Phillip Shelmadine of Kearney and Mr and Mrs Carl Wieseman and Jack.
Winter descended on this section of Nebraska with the season’s lowest temperatures. Osceola weather observer Harold Klingman records four-day minimums Sunday 26, Monday 27, Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 and forecasted warmer days by week’s end.
Mrs George Finecy who had been in ill health past month died at her Osceola home on Monday December 27 after surgery in Omaha. Services were held Wednesday December 29 at 2 00 p m at the Funeral Home with burial in Osceola Cemetery. Obituary next week.
Sharol Brown of Oshkosh visits this week as a guest of Eleanor Gabriel, sharing time during a local hospitality arrangement.
Edith Heilman, Polk County AA chapter chair, announces the annual January polio drive. The 1955 effort aims for nine million vaccinations if the Salk trial vaccine proves protective, with total fundraising reaching sixty four million to cover care and research costs.
Jerome A. Gabriel, son of Mr and Mrs Albert A Cobriel of Osceola, has been promoted to corporal while serving in Germany. He works as a personnel clerk in the area.
Found a tame white rabbit wandered to the Gissler household. Bernie Gissler turned in the item and the rabbit was kept at his parents home before being taken to Merle Runquist’s place, where the owner may claim it. The owners may be nearby town residents missing a pet.
Osceola hosts its eighth annual Farm and Home Day on Tuesday January 18 with an all day program at the school auditorium and Methodist church basement. State educators and county home agents lead sessions on milk regulations seed selection social security and water resources for men and family life topics for women. The program opens with a welcome by Chamber president Martin Roberts and includes a noon lunch served by the activities committee. A full schedule will be released before the event.
Lincoln hosts the Inaugural Ball honoring Governor-Elect Victor Anderson on Thursday January 6 at the University of Nebraska Coliseum. W Joyce Ayres chairs the ball committee and says proceeds above expenses go to the state March of Dimes Fund. Tickets are $1.50 and open to the public.
Warranty deed transfers include Edward E. Shears and wife to Kinsey E. Johnson and wife for a 75 by 330 feet tract in 12-13-3. Albert Pruss and wife to George Emper convey Lot 17 in Block 2 of Van Vorce's Addition to Shelby.
At the regular Osceola Chamber of Commerce meeting last Monday night Martin Roberts was elected president for the coming year and will assume duties at once. Dwight Bush named vice president. Directors chosen include Lloyd Green Ray Conrad Fred Bond Tom Reece and Sheldon Bond with terms expiring 1957 1956 and 1955 respectively.
On January 2 at 7 30 p m the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg will screen the color sound film Sacrifice. Created by former Stromsburg agriculture teacher and Congo missionary Dr Harvey Widman the film portrays African native life and modern missionary work.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Miller and family of Rising City and Mrs. Phyllis Iler and children were Tuesday evening visitors with the E. W. Bonne family.
1955 license plates go on sale January 3 at the Polk County treasurer's office due to New Year’s Day closing. Notices of valuation will be mailed December 31 and plate buyers must include tax and valuation notices, 1954 registration, correct payment, and 25 cents if mailing. In person purchases avoid mailing fee.
