Polk County communities observe the usual number of Christmas programs with school districts closing for festivals. Public events occurred yesterday while most entertainments are scheduled for tonight or tomorrow.
Santa Claus visited Osceola Saturday and handed each child a bag of candy. The First Presbyterian Church hosted a well attended program led by the Sunday school with a Japan missionary playette featuring Keing Nadine Stowe Linus Heald Margaret Anderson and John Ed Campbell.
Christmas exercises will be held this evening at the Wesley Chapel U B Church. The event promises seasonal music and readings in a community service setting.
The Vested Choir delivered an excellent performance Sunday morning and a special Christmas concert followed. The Baptist Christmas tree and festivities are scheduled for Tuesday evening December 25.
The Swede Home Choir presents an evening program at Swede Home Lutheran Church on Friday December 28 starting at 8 o clock. Rev C A Sward presides with hymns scripture reading and prayers. Featured numbers include Blessed is He Who Cometh a vocal duet by Rachel and Bernice Sward piano solo Genavieve Fredrickson a vocal solo by Theodore Johnson reading How the Gospel Came to Jim Oaks Myrtle Flodman and piano concerto by C M Von Weber with Lillie Chindgren and organ accompaniment. Also While Shepherds Watched their Flocks and Silent Night conclude with benediction by Rev Sword. Admission 25 cents and refreshments 15 cents.
A Saturday night community Christmas service on the south side of the square featured carols invoca tion scripture readings and an address. A letter to the Peoples Voice defends belief in Santa Claus, urging teachers to foster faith, followed by local church Christmas programs and services across Omaha area churches.
Shelby M. E. Church held Christmas services Monday morning with worship and fellowship. The event focused on community prayer and festive observance at the church.
A Christmas Eve service at Green's Chapel begins at 7 45 with a tree and program. All are welcome to attend this community gathering.
There was a Christmas program and tree on Friday December 8 with a noon dinner for patrons and pupils, led by teacher Charles Hastings. A related Friday program in District 64, led by Miss Ethelyne Anderson, drew a good attendance of parents and friends.
The Stromsburg Community Association gathered 54 members and guests at the Thompson Hotel dining room for a well attended dinner and program. Rev. A W Lyons spoke on The Soul of a City, stressing Courtesy Cooperation and a third element he called tune life. Rev. Thomas E Barr outlined the American League of Good Will plans, signaling a possible Stromsburg branch soon.
On December 12 Polk Progress reports a party at A G Glad's home for Lars Olaf known as Ola or L O Glad, manager of Farmers Grain and Stock Co. About 75 friends attended, giving a traveling bag as a gift and sharing refreshments in a festive evening. The note says he is 36 years old and wishes him happy returns.
Osceola High School opened with victories at the H. S. gym Friday night. The girls defeated Polk 24 to 0, while the boys beat Gresham 26 to 7.
Local notes list guests visiting Shelby over the Christmas season with trips from Lincoln Omaha Rising City David City Kearney Beulah Wagner and Scotts Bluff. Mentions include Frank Larson and wife E F Ruth and daughter Olivia Ruth Miss Georgia Shore Miss Lulu Olson and others visiting relatives and attending holiday events. Dr G E LeMar and Harold LeMar arrive from Rapid City South Dakota to spend Christmas with family. Willie Burritt candidate for a premium calf as The Nebraska Farmer subscription incentive.
H. C. Duncan arrives from Brainard with family and opens a new produce station in the Meridian Garage building on the square. He takes the former E. D. Fillman office and the west side of the building. The drive in feature should aid winter trade. Duncan has four to five years in produce and formerly worked in newspapers. he served in the war and has a brother in produce at David City.
Ww Pratt and Albert and Arnold Grossnicklaus left yesterday for a Texas trip by Mr Pratt’s car. They plan to stay until about January 15. Pratt will visit Angleton near Galveston to oversee land interests while the Grossnicklaus boys accompany him to inspect much of the state.
Russell H. Mace married Myrtle Jennings of Merrick county in county court with Judge F. H. Ball presiding. The couple will farm the Powers farm. Mace served overseas in World War I as a soldier of Uncle Sam. Myrtle Jennings taught in local schools and will join a wide circle of friends in the neighborhood.
Cinct farmers gathered Thursday and Friday to husk Fritz Olson’s corn after his serious injury a week earlier. Neighbors call the act generous as Olson battles to recover, with chances improving as support continues.
Ira Harbert formerly of Shelby and son of J. B. Harbert had his arm amputated below the elbow after his hand was pulled into a shredder at his farm east of Rising City last Thursday. His progress is favorable and relatives from this area visited him in Rising City.
Sheriff Van Hoosen took Frank Bernt into custody Friday after a court found him guilty on two counts related to drinking. He will be taken to Lincoln for treatment under the mental health action following his appearance in court last week.
The death of Chas. Ryan occurred at his home in David City on Thursday. His remains were brought to Shelby and laid to rest in the cemetery there yesterday. He was a brother of Arthur Ryan formerly in Shelby's barber business and a cousin of the Ryak brothers of this city. He had many friends in Polk county who mourn his passing.
The infant adopted from a Lincoln institution by Mr and Mrs Maurice Wickberg of Stromsburg died at their home yesterday. The institutional superintendent transported the body to Lincoln for interment.
