Auxiliary Christmas Luncheon and charity report

The American Legion Auxiliary met December 17 with 29 members and two guests for a covered dish luncheon. Seventeen lap robes were completed for the Veterans Hospital along with 480 pounds of used clothing sent to the Opportunity Center at Columbus and 35 pounds kept for local use. A Christmas candle lighting program featured Fern Wyman and others, with Anne Marie Snugg on piano. Prizes were won in bingo by Marjorie Fonda Gladys Roberts and Hilda Yungdahl. Luncheon hostesses were Grace Hunter Marian Heindryckx and Geraldine Klein.

Ray Conrad Honored For 21 Years Service At Fair

Polk County Agricultural Society secretary manager Ray Conrad was honored for 21 years of service at the Stromsburg Christmas party with 44 members and guests present. President Henry Galus presented a plaque and certificate of appreciation. Don Sigler succeeds Conrad as secretary and a fair board committee will oversee management.

Fire Destroys Hog Barn and Straw at Schott Farm

Osceola Volunteer Fire Department battled a late night blaze at Louis Schott's farm on December 17. A steel concrete hog housing building burned, with 450 bales straw, nine sows, and 175 piglets destroyed. Five sows and 20 small pigs were saved. damage deemed repairable though insurance may not cover all losses. Electrical short suggested as possible cause.

Ill John Inness Improves. Mayo Rochester Update

John Inness, hospitalized at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota since last Tuesday, is improving and expected to return home midweek. Mrs. Martin Scholz, formerly at Clarkson Hospital Omaha, has been moved to Maplecrest Nursing Home at 66th Avenue and Maple Street Omaha 68104.

Green Girls Basketball Fall To Veteran Cedar Rapids Tigers

Osceola girls basketball lost 85 to 30 at Cedar Rapids, in their first year of the program. Cedar Rapids has five years of girls play and three straight conference titles, with a 5 11 lineup. Coach Bob Zelasney praises hustle and experience for future wins.

Cedar Rapids led the whole game 29-5 after the first quarter and 47-13 at halftime. Kim Boden scored six in the first half as Osceola built a large early advantage amid 18 percent shooting and 37 percent free throws. Boden 10 and Schott 9 led scoring.

Osceola Bulldogs win double dual and beat Clarks and Fullerton

Osceola high school wrestling improved to 6-0 by defeating Clarks 39-19 and shutting out Fullerton 72-0 in a Tuesday double dual cited with pin and forfeit wins. Dale Runquist, Ray Johnson, Corky Cliffords, and Tim Bachenberg led early leads while Clarks later provided tougher opposition before final pins secured the big win.

Donelson Re-Elected To ASC County Committee

Polk County ASC delegates re elected F A Donelson to the county committee for a three year term. Donelson of Stromsburg farms three miles west of town and has six years on the county committee starting in 1970. W John Nyberg and Robert Peterson named first and second alternates for one year terms. Richard Sealey Jr of Polk named county committee chairman and Paul Walgren vice chairman for 1977. Eight of nine delegates attended the ASC convention for the election.

Swedish historian to microfilm Swedish church history in Osceola

The Polk County Historical Society hosted Leonard Setterdahl from Sweden for a talk on microfilming Swedish church history. Setterdahl, linked to the Emigrant Institute of Smaland, is based in East Moline and has spent eight years in the U.S. gathering material to help Swedish descendants trace roots.

Santa visits Osceola High School for Christmas candy

Santa Claus stopped at Osceola High School Gym Saturday night to share candy with students and thanks the Chamber of Commerce for providing treats. He said Christmas means sharing and promised to return next year.
