Trail Of Crime Ends In Polk County Sentencing

Robert Maltbe age 25 of Illinois and his 19 year old Indiana wife and their 4 month old baby were involved in a trail of thefts across the middle west. Maltbe was sentenced to two years and nine months by Judge Landis in Osceola for stealing a trailer at Stromsburg on December 9 and selling it at David City on the 10th. The case linked to a stolen Buick convertible, a Montana car theft, and an FBI warrant. Maltbe faces federal charges after Polk County sentence and is also said to be AWOL from army service.

County Corn Crown Won by Local Farmer

A local farmer, Donald Willits of the Charles Timm farm in Valley precinct, won the county corn crown with a record 117.21 bushels per acre. The DeKalb hybrid was used and yield was verified by independent parties. Willits received a engraved plaque at a Grand Island dinner on December 16, with other high county yields noted from Paul Stevens and Elmer Tooker.

McCormicks Celebrate Sixty Years With Open House

Mr. and Mrs. Ben McCormick of Osceola observed their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday afternoon December 19. Maple Leaf Club and family hosted, with about 150 guests including out of town relatives from Denver Wheatland Columbus Lincoln Omaha and California calling to congratulate.

Former Polk County Residents Wed in California

Miss Edith Sneeders and Albert Johnson, long-time Polk County residents, wed on Tuesday December 7 at the home of the bride’s sister in Turlock California. Rev Eckman officiated in the presence of immediate family. The couple plans to reside in Kingsburg California after a short wedding trip. Mr Johnson formerly lived near Osceola and the bride hailed from Stromsburg.

Postal Cancellations Hit New Peak This Year

Local postal receipts rise to a new peak with about 30 000 cancellations from December 12 to 21 for Christmas cards and First Class mail. One day saw almost 5 000 cancellations, with other light mail and parcels not counted.

Gas Employees Attend Christmas Party in Columbus

AAA Farm News Election Results and 1948 AAA Plans

During December the AAA elections selected three regular and two alternate community committeemen per precinct and nine delegates to the county convention. The county committee for the coming year includes Lee Campbell as Chairman, Richard Sealey as Vice Chairman, and Nick Eller as Third Member. Precinct delegates include Frank D. McMeekin and others across Canada to Valley. Loans or purchase agreements for price supports on small grain must be completed by December 31, 1948. AAA offices close the afternoon of December 24.

Osceola's cage quintet earned a 34-22 win over Rising City on their home floor behind 16 points from Leo Negly and balanced contributions from Burt Brazee and Lyle Johnston. Rising City Seconds lost 32-22 while the second team edged Stromsburg Seconds 28-22 after a 59-29 setback last Friday.

Santa Claus to Visit Osceola Friday Afternoon

Santa Claus will visit Osceola this Friday at 2:00 pm at the courthouse. The event will distribute sacks of nuts candy and fruit to all attending children with teachers and students invited to join. The Chamber of Commerce hosted a prior free show and prepared more treats for the arrival.

Young child Yungdahl dies after brief illness

Stephen Alfred Yungdahl born January 5 1942 in Osceola Nebraska died December 15 1948 at St Francis Hospital aged 6 years 11 months 10 days after a long illness. Survived by parents one sister Sheila Mae three grandparents and many relatives and friends. Funeral Friday 2 pm from Kepners and St Paul Lutheran Church with pallbearers Harry Imm Donald Yungdahl Severn Oquist Ronald Carlson and others. Oscar J Williams Buried in Osceola After services

Oscar J Williams born February 28 1878 near Shelby Nebraska died December 7 1948. He was the son of Joseph K Williams and Nancy Williams. He leaves two brothers Elijah H of Nampa Idaho and Franklin of Osceola plus a nephew and three nieces. Funeral services were held December 9 at Kepner Funeral Home and burial followed in Osceola cemetery.

John Ayres Dies at Lincoln After Stroke

V. A. Newcomer received notice of the death of John Ayres in Lincoln. About 60, he suffered a stroke four years prior and did not recover. He ran a jewelry store long ago at the current Lester Anderson barber shop site, moved to Lincoln about 25 years back. Survived by widow Margaret, a son Robert at home, and son Glen in Chicago. older son Francis was killed in the last war.

Mrs. C. M. Mustard Dies at Omaha Hospital

Mrs. C. M. Mustard of the valley north of Osceola died Tuesday evening in an Omaha hospital after prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband, a son Eddie at home, and a daughter Mrs. Nina Hopkins of Papillion Nebraska. Funeral services will be at the Silver Creek Funeral Home Friday at 2:00 PM.

Viona Dreeszen daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Dreeszen of Lincoln and Ervin Deeds son of Mrs Flossie Deeds of Osceola were married November 24 at a Methodist church parsonage in Council Bluffs Iowa. The wedding was announced at the Phi Kappa Tau Christmas party at Wesleyan. The bride a Wesleyan graduate teaches music and English in Dunbar Nebraska this term. The groom will graduate from Wesleyan this spring.

First Mass at New St Andrews Church Opens at Midnight

St Andrews Church near Osceola hosts its first mass in the new building at midnight on Christmas Eve. Construction began last August to replace the old church burned down a few years ago with Father OConnor of Bellwood serving as supply pastor.
