Local minister and wife escape serious injuries in Christmas crash
Rev. and Mrs. Underhill were involved in a snow and ice accident west of Osceola on their way back from Hastings. Their car left the flat, struck the highway, and rolled over onto its top near the railroad tracks. They suffered only minor bruises despite extensive vehicle damage.

The body of Lt. Donald E. Mueller, killed on Iwo Jima March 14, 1945, was returned to the United States and re buried in Thayer Nebraska on December 22, 1948. He married Kathryn Huston in California in November 1944 before serving in the Pacific War. Mrs. Mueller Eveland and her parents attended the funeral as the York American Legion conducted graveside rites.

Man Arrested on Charge of Fraudulent Checks in Shelby
Gerald Mentzger 25 originally from Indiana was held in Polk county jail after local authorities learned from Moberly Missouri that he faced about $1000 in fraudulent check charges there. He admitted desertion from the navy in 1942 and signed extradition papers to Missouri where a warrant exists. if convicted he faces naval discipline, otherwise charges here may lead to further action. mentzger had worked as a hotel cook in Omaha before Shelby arrest.
