More than 200 sacks of mail were shipped from the Osceola postoffice on Monday marking the largest day in the office history per Postmaster Snider. The postoffice will be open until noon on Christmas Day and will resume normal service Monday after a brief closing.
A historical docket lists jury terms for 1927 across multiple counties. It shows Polk County March 7 and November 7 Equity terms, Seward County March 7 and November 7 Equity terms, Butler and York counties with various February to September dates, Saunders and other counties noting juvenile jury calls. It also notes second week jury term calls and presiding judges and reporters.
The Osceola High School Girls' Chorus directed by Miss Ruthi Miller presented its first recital in the school auditorium. The audience and patrons praised the program and the performers, especially Arlene Steeple, Jima Newcomer, and Ellen Calhoun McGill, with a varied lineup of songs, readings, and choruses.
An amnesiac man found in Schuyler has been identified as George Aldrich a Lincoln laborer with no fixed address. A clue came when he told Deputy Kavanaugh last Monday that his name might be Charles Aldrich. Relatives in Polk Nebr and Hartwich Ia were located and Lewis Aldrich of Polk agreed to care for him while arrangements are made for his return.
Christmas shoppers in Osceola New Hampshire prepare for holiday currency demands with $1 $2 and $5 bills. Banks stock up early for rising requests and the treasury department distributes two and a half dollar gold pieces for Christmas stockings as many coins flow back after the holidays beginning in January.
Mr and Mrs Fred Dunn and children called on the George Gilbert home. Walter Morys visited the Freak Myers home near Silver Creek. The L.Vrg Myrtle Dunn Speng party traveled to Osceola. Local residents attended funerals in Cedar Rapids Nebraska. Mrs Mary Buik died at 96. Mr and Mrs Morys attended the funeral and returned the same day. A shivaree for Effie Rutter and Lee Mickey drew neighbors. A sale at Geo Gilbert drew a large crowd and the Gilberts planned moving to Osceola. A planned program and Xmas social with an evergreen tree and Santa Claus was announced for December 23. Weather remained mild with prediction of a cold January.
Mrs. Anna Jeffrey died this morning after a several week illness. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2:30 in the M. B. K. Church. Dr. Chas. W. Jeffrey, her son, will arrive this evening from Rawlins Wyoming.
Mr and Mrs Edward Barker arrive from Billings to spend Christmas with his parents in Shelby. Several locals travel to Lincoln and Omaha for gatherings. The Shelby High School basketball team loses 12 to 6 to David City, and churches schedule Christmas programs. A new chicken hatchery plans to incubate 10 000 eggs weekly starting late January. Auditors from Vanbeskirk Remington Co. release a two hundred page county report finding minor errors but no systemic issues. sheriff and treasurer books largely correct. total audit cost about 2400.
Six people were killed at a Wellborn Florida grade crossing on Wednesday. A young woman her mother mother in law and two young daughters aged six and three were among the dead. The party included a friend wife of the Wellborn postmaster. The crash followed a driver taking a chance to save a quarter minute by not stopping.
The Maple Leaf Club met December 16 at Mrs. Sam Wyaman's home with 47 attendees including 12 members and 6 visitors. One new member joined and $15 was voted as a Christmas gift to the Mother Jewel home in York. The next meeting will be January 6 with Mrs Nepla Dunn, focusing on aging and demonstration on removing and finishing furniture.
John Sjebrom, counts clerk, plans to leave after New Year for his old home in Sweden. He has arranged transport and will resign to begin a six month journey to visit family, including his 81 year old mother, sister, and brother, and recount tales of his adopted land.
The Golden Rod Club met in December at Mrs. Victor VanHorn’s home with seven members present. After business they discussed Living Room Furniture and decided to hold an oyster supper for members and families January at Mrs. Gunnar d Peterson’s home. Refreshments were served.
The Happy Hour Club met December 16 at Mrs. Tillie Tooker’s home with 19 members and one visitor. Mrs. Hulda Cannon led music and readings before Santa Claus appeared. Cookies packed for the Child Saving Institute. Next meeting set for January 6 at Mrs. Lydia Wieseman’s home.
Dr LeMar and family of Osceola joined Mr and Mrs W J Herrman for a Sunday visit. Area residents attended Geo Gilbert sale Monday. Mrs A J Wilson and son from Arcadia visited F W Gruke home Tuesday. Oscar Anderson went to Omaha on business Sunday. Earl Leeds of Stromsburg visited Joe Tschauer family briefly. Farmers Union held its annual meeting at Frank Swanson home Monday with oysters served. Edd Johnson and daughter spent Sunday in Marquette Nebraska. Grace Mentink visited Ferne Timm in Osceola Sunday.
