Schott son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Schott reported for the armed services on March 20 1945 inducted into the Navy on March 21 and received boat training at Great Lakes Illinois after a brief home leave May 23 he resumed overseas service and is now serving somewhere in the South Pacific Mayor Harry W Pratt dies in Galveston Texas Osceola mourns its mayor born April 4 1900 in Salarosa New Mexico died December 12 1945 in Galveston Texas longtime Osceola oil businessman and civic leader leaves widow two daughters two brothers two sisters and several nieces and nephews funeral services were held at Osceola Methodist Church burial in Osceola cemetery.

Fairview News Christmas furloughs and flu confinement

Jack and Louis Mickey return home on furlough with Louis to receive his discharge after a 30 day leave. Albert Balstedt stayed with the Carlson family and recently came back from Italy. Annetta Karges visited Veilene Darnell at the Kohl home in Clarks. Several families including Carl son and Church households are ill with the flu and confined to home. Mrs Gust Carlson hosted the Ladies Aid Christmas party with gifts exchanged. Lawrence Meacham and Willard Carter households hosted Sunday dinner near Silver Creek. No school at Riverside Monday due to a flu sickness in Mrs Miller’s family. Wishing readers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Verna Alice Miller born near Shelby Nebraska February 5 1853 died December 13 1945 at St. Marys Hospital Columbus Nebraska She married Harry Blevins September 30 1903 and they had Esther Laura Leila Marguerite Harold V Blevins and Crete Estelle The family moved from the Blue farm to Shelby area in 1908 She was a Methodist and Rebekah Lodge member Survived by husband five grandchildren three brothers and four sisters Funeral services were held December 17 at the Shelby home and M E Church with interment in Shelby Cemetery.

Death Notice of Gilbert Lee Nantkes in Sheridan

Gilbert Lee Nantkes born near Shelby May 11 1897 died December 6 1945 in Sheridan Wyoming after a fall and bronchial pneumonia. He lived in Polk County farmed near Shelby attended Shelby and rural schools and York College. He owned City Meat Market in Osceola with his brother and married Frances Overton June 18 1938 in Columbus Nebraska. They lived in Sheridan where he worked in the meat market until illness forced retirement. He survived by wife Frances son Robert Richard Nantkes of York sister Leona Campbell of Omaha and other relatives. Funeral services were held December 10 1945 at 2 PM at the Funeral Home with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Corn Show and Quilt Show Honored at Osceola Fair

Sam Crouse chairs the merchants committee praising a farm folk appreciation day. Paige Hall of the Nebraska College of Agriculture judged the Corn Show with 34 entries across six classes and awarded prizes to residents of Osceola, Columbus, Gresham, and Shelby. The Quilt Show also announced prize winners for oldest quilt, most pieces, best quilting, and various categories across cotton and wool fabrics.

Quilt Show Highlights and Corn Show at Osceola

The Osceola display combined 38 quilt entries in pieced, embroidered, and appliqued styles with a notable corn show. Prizes went to Mrs. Otto Fleming and Mrs. C A Dawes for best piecing and embroidery, while Ben Zedicher and Lloyd Hahn earned top entries in wool and applique. The oldest quilt, a 75 year old Flying Geese piece by Mrs J D Scott, and Mrs Ida Ferris’s 4397-piece trip around the world quilt drew attention.
