Merle P. Schott of Polk County joined the Navy March 20 1945, trained at Great Lakes, shipped out July 12, served on USS Tracy DM 19, was among the first to land at Nagasaki after Japan’s surrender, wrote from abroad about Nagasaki and the atomic bomb. A local note also recalls a wartime tale of two pocketbooks tied to Bernie and Rolland Gissler.

Corn Show Ends Friday With Pancake Feed
The second annual Corn Show at Osceola closes Friday with a free pancake feed at Kelly's Hall at noon. Visitors are asked to bring their own forks due to lack of silverware. Entries will be accepted until Thursday night. More than $150 in prizes will be awarded for the best ten cars, freak cars, longest car, and others with door prizes.

Bulldogs Open 1945-46 Basketball Season With Wins
Osceola Bulldogs opened their season by defeating the Clarks first and second teams 46-20 and 25-4. Sigler led the first team with 9 points while Schutt scored 27 in the second, as Osceola benefited from a small Clark floor and strong defense from Miller and Grossnicklaus. Shelby Man Dies of Heart Attack in North Shelby
Ed Elliott died suddenly at his home in north Shelby shortly after noon Monday December 10. He worked in Moon's store meat department and is survived by his widow two daughters Mrs Margaret Kearney of Washington and Lillian Mrs Robert Miller of Oshkosh a son Richard E Elliott of Idaho and four granddaughters. One daughter and one son preceded him in death. No funeral arrangements had been made.

Navy Lieutenant Receives Commendation for Shore Patrol Manual
Lieutenant Edward A. Landgraf USNR has earned a letter of appreciation from his former commander for a Shore Patrol Manual of Instructions he authored. The Naval Bureau in Washington recommended using it as in service training and distributing copies to District Shore Patrol Officers nationwide. Landgraf is son of Mrs. Charles Landgraf of Scotia Nebraska and son in law of Mr and Mrs I D Huston, and recently visited Osceola for two weeks.

Youth with borrowed car injured in city crash
Louis Merg, 20, of Brainard, is hospitalized after a late Thursday crash on Highways 30A and 81. He drove the borrowed car from Brainard to Osceola, losing control and hitting a guard rail. Injuries include leg wounds and facial cuts. The initially reported tale of two men and liquor proved fictitious.

Gilbert Nantkes Buried in Wyoming
Gilbert Nantkes died at his home in Sheridan Wyoming on December 5 and funeral services were held there on Monday. He had fallen from a ladder months earlier and was bedbound for some time. He lived in or near Osceola for years and ran a meat market with his brother Wilbur before moving to Sheridan. He is survived by his wife of Sheridan a sister Leona Campbell of Omaha and a brother Wilbur Nantkes of York.

Mrs Christine Johnson Swanson of Stromsburg Osceola area died December 5 at 72 years. Born February 13 1873 in Sweden she immigrated in 1894 with her father settling near Osceola. She married Edward Swanson February 24 1897 and had three children Alfred Norma Monroe. Funeral services were held December 7 at Kepner Funeral Home Osceola and Evangelical Covenant Church Stromsburg with interment in Stromsburg cemetery.
