Take Census of Nation's Farms

The United States undertakes a middecade census of agriculture to count 6.5 to 7 million farms. William M. Steuart leads the Census Bureau effort, employing 212 supervisors and about 18,000 enumerators, with an expenditure of 3.5 million dollars. The program, supported by Congress, uses early electrical tabulating machines and aims to provide detailed farm data to guide policy and production estimates. Farmers themselves will serve as enumerators, paid 25 to 50 cents per report, during their off season.
