A veteran’s humorous wartime recollections recount training mishaps and misadventures in the early days of military service. The narrative covers registration, medical exams, rough clothing, bunk life, sea voyage to Australia, and initial trench duties with light satirical observations on military discipline and luck.
Recount began Monday to decide the County Clerk post. County Judge Merrick, with bipartisan attorneys, expects completion by Thursday. Early unofficial tallies show Miss Kresha ahead by one vote with Osceola Platte precincts and mail ballots still to count.
J B Rossiter announces Ak Sar Ben racing funds will be shared by 89 Nebraska county fairs and 4-H shows with each receiving 303.25 after 5000 reserved for commission expenses. Four counties miss out and Rossiter warns many fairs may be canceled in 1943 due to the war and Army occupation of the Omaha plant.
Mrs. Hamilton hosted the Ladies Aid with a vote to discontinue the next meeting. Mrs. Mont Mustard, after major surgery at Clarkson hospital in Omaha, returned home. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Dake and Rex visited relatives near Fullerton. Frances Carlson will work at the Ord Ordinance Plant in Grand Island. Private Rolland Botets and wife of New Jersey are on a ten day furlough visiting family in St Libora and at the Norris home. Jay McCormick left for Chicago for a government job. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dake dined with their daughter Mrs. Clair McCormick in Stromsburg. she visits her parents this week.
Game Commission officers report hunting remains dull statewide with only a few areas showing activity. Dakotas notes indicate large numbers of birds lingering in the north.
The narrator recalls charging with fellow soldiers as 10 000 Japanese faced them. A random shot wounds him, and he wakes to be told he is bound for the morgue before a nurse lightens the moment. He jokes about joining the Navy next time the call goes out.

Mary Rose Kosch returned to her home Monday after recovery from injuries in an auto collision south of Columbus last Monday evening. Lola Kosch and Robert McMeekin Jr. suffered minor cuts and bruises. Leslie Hanshew marked his 69th birthday with a gathering at Alfred Kuhnel’s home for an oyster supper in honor of Mrs. Kuhnel.
The paper corrects last week’s commissioners proceedings noting the County Judge submitted 233.25 in fees while 4.25 was the sheriff’s.
Polk County officials reported Monday evening’s blackout test as largely successful with only a few lights remaining on due to oversight or carelessness, quickly extinguished when noticed.
Annie Cerny of Columbus visited Saturday in the Ralph Haseel balech home. Oswald Bernt and son of St. Andrews and John Micek spent Saturday in Seward on business. Carl Benda and daughter of Genoa visited Josie Benda and sons Sunday. Leland Bruckner of Columbus visits family in town. Edward Lisko spent Sunday in Duncan with friends. John Micek and Leo Lassek went to Monroe Monday for business matters.
Reports show wartime increases of tuberculosis in many foreign nations and the United States sees a 1941 decline in deaths. England and Wales report a 12 percent rise, with 45 percent among children, linked to hospital closures. Paris faces a 10 percent overall rise and 28 percent among children amid food shortages.
Frank Custer of Fremont died at his home Saturday December 12 after pneumonia illness. Funeral services were held Monday. He once partnered with Joe Gubser in 1904 and lived in Shelby briefly. Survived by wife and three sons William of Fremont Frank of California and Dr. Lawrence Suster in Australia.
Leonard Augustine placed fifth and Duane Schmoker seventh in the 4-H judging contest tied to the State Short horn show and sale in Columbus. Ray L. Cruise reports 4-H members from ten area counties participated, with Glen Kresha and Alan Deeter of Osceola also taking part. Augustine and Schmoker earned cash prizes from the Shorthorn Breeders Association.
County Extension Agent Ray L. Cruise reports four Polk county families will broadcast on radio station WNAX Yankton South Dakota. Chris Mack from Yankton recorded on farms for food production programs and other enterprises. Broadcasts air at 12 50 p m with a schedule listing Louis Schott Osceola December 17 Rex Brigham Shelby December 21 Dwight Newcomer Gresham December 28 and EH A Hedlund Osceola December 25.
The Wesley Chapel Womans Society of Christian Service held its Christmas meeting at the Richards home. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gabriel of Fullerton and Richard Gabriel of California. Richard has joined the army. Local residents and relatives returned or traveled for family events with the Kuehnal and related families.

Mrs Thresa Schaf to David City for winter with son Joseph. Milton Gabriel listed as naval aviation cadet in Kansas City with preflight at St Marys Calif. Frank Custer of Fremont dies of pneumonia survived by wife and three sons. Funeral in Fremont. Families from Shelby visit Brighams. Glenn Davis now employed at Bernt Service Station. Stromsburg updates include Lawrence Twarling event with guests, Clara Anderson visiting for Christmas, Mrs Alice Ingman and others in Omaha, J W Anderson improving in Immanuel hospital, Ladies Aid housewarming, Mrs Johnson, Lincoln opera visit, and Mrs John A Falk returning from Bryan Memorial Hospital.
Miss Rose Erickson daughter of Alfred J. Erickson of Stromsburg is 23 and a Stromsburg High School and Mounds Midway School of Nursing graduate. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps in August 1941 and is stationed at Great Lakes Mall with the rank of Ensign.
Mr and Mrs Horace McKeag and Mrs James McKeag visited York Monday. Clem Marak family dined with Kenneth Mentink group Sunday. Della Johnson moved to York and will stay with Grace Burnham. Johnsons occupy vacated farm. Clarence Anderson visited Elmer Allinder home. Al linder improving. Francis Poe hosted bridge for Herman Larson and wife leaving for Council Bluffs Iowa. Larson received gift and prizes awarded to Ervin Grossnicklaus and Braithwait family members.
Chester Walgren suffered an injury when a finger on his left hand was cut off by a car fan belt this week. He was reportedly working on the vehicle when the incident occurred.
