Everett Smith 33 joined the U S Army last January with training at Fort Warren Wyoming and camps in Texas before transfer to Camp Dix New Jersey and overseas to New Africa. Osceola opened the basketball season on the road at Polk after a 32 15 defeat. Polk built a 22 9 halftime lead behind guard Smith who nailed four long shots. Osceola improved after halftime holding Polk to 10 points while scoring six. Mills led Osceola with 11 points and Smith topped Polk with 10. Osceola second string, led by Bill Umshler and the Schutt brothers, lost to Polk’s reserves 25 15.
