Armchair Contest winner ties for last QB prize

Joe Anderson of Lincoln tied with JoAnn Hoffer of Columbus for last place in the 1976 Armchair Quarterback Contest after predicting Baylor 178 passing yards against Texas Tech. actual was 160. Osceola Bulldogs Fall In Season Opener To East Butler 75 60

Osceola opened its basketball season at home with a 75-60 loss to East Butler. John Zelagte led Osceola with 23 points as Mark Schott added nine in the second quarter surge. Osceola trailed by as many as 10 in the third and fought back to within six late. Todd Hiemer grabbed 12 rebounds and Dan Bond had eight assists. The Bulldogs meet the Vikings next at Stromsburg. The JV won 60-53.

Councilmen Named To Committees

All members of the City Council attended the December meeting. Newly elected councilmen Ron Christensen and Art Senkbeil took oaths. Dr. Robert Thompson was elected president. Mayor Monson named 1977 committee assignments and approved contracts with R W Beck and Associates for the sewer lagoon and Lincoln Telephone for emergency 911 service.

Gas Rates Rise After Christmas in Nebraska Towns

Natural gas rates will increase December 27 in Osceola, Shelby and 35 other Cengas served Nebraska communities. The 17.23 cent per thousand cubic feet hike applies to general firm rate steps except the minimum use step and stems from a Northern Natural Gas Company filing with the Federal Power Commission. The adjustment funds higher field gas costs and aims to spur new exploration activity.

Bulldogs Triumph In Opening Osceola Wrestling Meet

The Osceola Bulldogs opened the 1976-77 season with a 40-23 victory over Columbus Lakeview Vikings. Tim Bachenberg pinned Dan Cermak for the 98 pound win and Corky Cliffords pinned Kev Groteleuschen at 112. Greg Cliffords pinned Rick Hellbusch at 155, and Rick Johnson pinned Gary Egger for the fastest fall at 42 seconds. The win showcased depth with four junior varsity wins and upcoming tough duals next week. Teresa Shepard sustained a concussion and spine compression in a bicycle accident and is hospitalized but improving.
