Osceola Gears Up For Holiday Season With Events

Osceola progresses toward Christmas with decorated shops and lighting around the square. Chamber of Commerce and NPPD crews installed the festive lights as merchants prepare, with turkey giveaways weekly and late shopping on Wednesdays. The community also hosts school sports openings and a note on a new Weekender magazine supplement.

Norton Named Fifth District Judge by Governor Exon

William H. Norton, longtime Osceola attorney, is appointed Fifth District Judge by Governor J. J. Exon. He succeeds Judge John D. Zeilinger whose retirement takes effect January 5, 1977. Norton, 50, a Polk County native and 1951 Nebraska Law grad, has served as city attorney for Osceola and Polk, and chaired the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County committee.

OHL Bulldogs and Girls Open Football Season At Home

Season opens this week for OHL basketball teams. First year coach Dave Bowman leads five returning lettermen as the Bulldogs host East Butler Friday night. Senior leaders include John Zelasney Reggi Mentink and Mark Schott with others battling for starting spots. Girls coach Gail Harmon optimistic about first year with 21 players out and probable starters Peggy Tindall Kim Boden Teresa Campbell. The girls face Stromisburg on December 2 in their opener.

Open Extension meeting on farm business organization in Columbus

An Extension Service discussion in Columbus on Thursday December 9 will cover farm family incorporation and partnerships. Led by attorney Jim Fehringer and Extension specialists Phil Henderson and Doug Duey, the 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. session will explore estate planning tax management and capital needs for family farms.

The Bull dogs varsity and junior high teams plan strong season with many new wrestlers. Junior high begin December 9 at 6 30 p m against St Marys, followed by a varsity clash with David City.

Farmers Vote for Community Committeemen in Polk County

Polk County farmers received ballots for the 1976 ASC committee elections. Ballots must be sealed in the provided envelopes and mailed before December 6 with a signature on the mailing envelope. unsigned ballots are invalid. The Polk ASC Committee will count ballots on December 8 to select 1977 committeemen and delegates to the county convention on December 16.

Chamber Plans Free Chili and Holiday Events

Nineteen members attended the November chamber meeting in the city building. They urged businesses to stay open Wednesday evenings until Christmas and approved three turkey drawings on December 1 8 and 22. A free chili feed December 15 a free movie with Santa December 18 and outdoor decorations with NPPD help were planned. The next meeting will be December 21.

Former Resident Wins Certificate in Armchair Quarterback Contest

Osceola native Gary Garey of Omaha won a $5 merchandise certificate for predicting last week's football results in the Records annual Armchair Quarterback Contest. He correctly forecast 12 games, besting Doug Moon and Joe Anderson by three misses each. yardage predictions differed from actuals in several games.
