The Lutheran Ladies created 55 Christmas trees from old cards to decorate doors at the Samaritan Center, bringing cheer to residents and visitors. The Osceola School Board, in a Monday meeting, approved a hot lunch price increase to 40¢, delayed until after the wage-price freeze, to cover rising costs.
The third Platte College practical nursing class all passed the state LPN exam and are employed. Twenty-six students took the test in October after graduating in September 1971, bringing total graduates to 80 with a perfect pass record. Area graduates include Debra Boss and Marcia Koh of Shelby and Clark. Ray Kresha of Osceola joined 13 other NE broadcasting students initiated into Alpha Epsilon Rho.
After 21 years of service Fred Bond will retire on January 1 ending a career that began with the city council and included eight years as mayor. He helped oversee infrastructure expansion and the erection of the new city hall and sewer projects. He and his wife Nina raised three sons, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Merv Stromberg will assume the role, bringing 20 years with ASCS and a familiar presence to county residents.
Three area men from Columbus Osceola and David City were named to the Statewide Advisory Committee for U S Senatorial candidate Wallace C Peters The appointees are Ray Arndt Columbus Democratic candidate for the Senate in 1964 Platte County Democratic Chairman Jim Majors Osceola Polk County Democratic Chairman and Dan Hook David City Butler County Democratic Chairman The committee includes a mix of Nebraskans businessmen farmers workers executives and politicians.
The Polk County Extension Service and Soil and Water Conservation District held their annual meeting at Ryan Hill Country Club on November 30. Three new board members were elected: Don Peterson, Stromsburg precinct. Mrs. Dave Lux, Shelby Hackberry precinct. and Mrs. David Schmidt, Columbus Clear Creek precinct. They will assume duties at the January meeting. Mrs. Leo McGowen of Ulysses gave a slide presentation on the "Big Blue."
Lakeview’s 16 rebound leader Steve McWilliams powered a 24 point performance as the Vikings opened with a 76 to 54 win over Osceola. Osceola’s Randy Neujahr Monty Tonniges and Chris Hayes battled foul trouble as Lakeview built a 60 47 edge by the third quarter. The B team added a 44 33 win. Goldenrod Conference welcomes Fullerton Cedar Rapids as members effective September 1 1973.
Mary Rodene clinches the final season Armchair Quarterback Contest after a run through 12 pro games and three college matches. Clarence Jones trailed with five goals, while six others tied or missed results. A $5 merchandise certificate awaits Mary at the Record Office, redeemable at participating businesses until December 31, 1971.
Ina Mangelsen and Victor Mangelsen of Osceola receive the 16th annual Polk County SWCD aerial photo award at the Ryan Hill Country Club. Recognized for land and wildlife conservation, their farm showcases erosion control dam, wind break, tree plantings, land leveling, irrigation water management, contour farming, terraces, grassed waterways, and range management.
The Polk County ASC will convene at the ASCS office in Osceola at 9:00 a.m. on December 14, 1971. Three delegates from each community elected December 7 will attend to elect a county ASC committee member and two alternates and pick a 1972 chairman and a vice chairman. Richard Sealey, Paul Walgren, and F. A. Donelson currently serve on the county committee.
The Nebraska Public Power District announced a rate increase effective January 1 1972. The plan projects an additional 6.6 million dollars in revenue for 1972, about 9.7 percent higher than present levels. NPPD serves 26 rural districts wholesale and 271 cities retail.
Osceola High School wrestlers posted five wins and seven losses in a 36 to 21 dual against Columbus Lakeview. Notable results include Svoboda and Anderson winning in games at 105 and 138 pounds, while three late pins hurt the Bulldogs. An upcoming triangular meet and a golden wedding anniversary reception are noted.
Osceola School plans phase two wage changes for January 3 1972 easing the wage price freeze. Hot lunch deficits of 609 dollars are offset by upcoming 40 cent meal rise and non retroactive pay. December salaries follow 1971 72 contract terms. Board schedules Christmas break December 22 to January 3 and approves junior high and track activities plus a driving training car use for events.
Osceola 4th 5th and 6th graders present a Samuel French adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Performances at Muse Theater Sunday Dec 12 at 2:00 PM and Monday Dec 13 at 7:00 PM feature a child cast led by director Eileen Blitzkie with roles for Tiny Tim Bob Cratchit Tiny Tim masters and ghosts.
Nebraska natives Lynn Boden of Osceola and J. D. Alexander of Pilger head SDSU rookie bid for starting spots. Boden, 6-4 225, backed the varsity as a guard and pulled on sweeps, praised by coach Dennis Moller.
About 250 attended the Osceola High School Band Banquet with keynote address by Mr. Jack R Snider director of the Nebraska Marching Band. Rex Cadwallader and Miss Beth Coffin led the program. Medals replaced letters for band tenure and Moog Synthesizer demonstrations wowed attendees.
