Prof. Raymond Roberts of the Nebraska college of agriculture reports severe root damage to winter wheat in southwestern Nebraska from a new aphid related to the apple grain aphis. Similar damage occurs in parts of Kansas and Colorado, with Polk county noting losses and pasturing impossible due to weakened root systems. The infestation began in Hitchcock county with an 800 acre field affected after inspecting 100 fields. Specimens were sent to Colorado, where an authority could not place the aphids with any known species.
