Sam E. Crouse was elected president of the Osceola Community Club at its annual meeting in Hotel Rapp on Monday. Phil B. Campbell, who had served as president after C. M. Humphrey’s resignation, announced he would not seek re election. M. R. Anderson was chosen as vice president.
The Osceola Community Club hosts the high school football team at Hotel Rapp next Thursday. A program is planned with motion pictures of the Nebraska Cornhuskers shown by Coach Ed Weir and several members of the 1938 Cornhuskers expected to attend.
The Osceola Community Club hosted its annual banquet honoring the top 4-H clubs in Polk County. Stull Corner Pig Club, led by Arthur Deeter, won first place for the second consecutive year, earning the permanent cup after another win. Progressive Shepherd's Club, led by Frank Bard, placed second and received gold-filled pins. A program featuring talks on 4-H topics and club activities followed, while Polk County reports 35 clubs with 276 members and rising competition.
Charles J. Augustin born Navoo Illinois March 4 1865 died Shelby Nebraska December 10 1938 at age 73 9 6. Survived by wife Pauline Wandie six sons three daughters eighteen grandchildren and six brothers and one sister. Funeral at Sacred Heart Church Shelby with interment Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Harold Brown on behalf of his minor son Robert sues Leonard Luft and Mabel Raeder of Osceola in Polk County district court for damages totaling 15000. The action stems from an auto accident near Central City on September 11, 1938. Plaintiffs are residents of Omaha.
Carl Curtis of Minden plans to leave for Washington after Christmas and will spend Christmas Day with his invalid mother. He will be accompanied by his secretaryMilton Cox who will report back with an unbiased view of the session. Cox, a longtime publisher and editor in the district, will accompany Curtis to the capital.
Anthony McCormick returned to Shelby Friday after spending two years in Waspella Saskatchewan. He joined his wife and two children who came from Canada recently and plan to settle in Shelby. A farewell for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huddleston took place at the Methodist church. They will host a public farm sale northeast of town on Tuesday December 19. Afterward Mrs. Huddleston will visit Missouri relatives for a month. In February the Huddlestons plan to move to Lengley Minnesota to live near relatives, with plans to choose a Minnesota home later. A McMeekin family reunion honored Mrs. James McMeekin Sr. at Everett Funkhouser’s home as she visited Polk County relatives. she and her daughter will travel to Lynwood California this winter. August Schade, after a month in Shelby, returned to California from Columbus.
Fire last Sunday evening completely destroyed a large bar and the house on the former James Gagan farm three miles southwest of Silver Creek. Cause unknown. Local residents including Floyd Frizzel and others were mentioned in nearby activities such as farm work, farm visits, and church and social events. Cemetery Association held a meeting with pantry shower honoring Mrs. O Clark. Residents prepared for upcoming gatherings including a Christmas exchange.
The Farm Security Administration and extension service sponsor a series of night school meetings led by Walter Berck and Howard Peterson starting next Monday at 8 pm. December 19 Courthouse, December 20 Ball School, December 21 Victor School, December 22 High Prairie. Farmers and the public are welcome to learn the latest on sorghums and hybrid corn, with county sorghum test results released and a moving picture strip on sorghum varieties.
A Polk County incident shows a flaw in state permit rules for auto dealers. A dealer paid ten dollars for a required permit at the county treasurer’s office, but the arrangement leaves the county seven cents short after allocations and transfers, not counting envelope costs. Such transactions are rare but costly enough to prompt concerns about funding.

The Tie Right Rope Club led by R L Smith includes Arthur Doremus Eulalia Stromberg Richard Anderson Elizabeth Smith Leonard Stromberg John R Anderson Junior Glasser Rodney Anderson Harold Anderson Marjorie Warnick Paul Anderson Reuben Anderson Marjorie Glasser LeRoy Anderson associate member. Stromsburg residents H B Branting and Leon Wurtz of Polk attended the Midwest Implement Dealers convention in Omaha from Wednesday to Friday last week. Local social notes include Mrs John Ogden and daughters visiting Osceola relatives, several families traveling to Omaha for Christmas, and a Christmas Bridge-Dinner Party hosted by T A James. High bridge scores were won by Mrs Clark Howard of Benedict and Arnold Isaacson of Polk.
Wesley Chapel society women hosted a gathering at Mrs. N O Brown's Osceola home. Church Aid met with the Henry Johnson family. William Berck from California visited relatives while en route home from New York. Mr and Mrs W G Herrman stayed with the Charley Imm family in Silver Creek. Mrs Alfred Kuehnal received a birthday surprise. Joe Gabriel and Mrs Sterrock of Fullerton attended the C J Augustine funeral and visited daughters. Farmers Union locals met at Miller School with an oyster supper. Delmar Richmond and cousin John Nebergall joined an oil banquet in David City.

Mr and Mrs Elwyn Johnson hosted a dinner honoring newlyweds Mr and Mrs LeRoy Johnson. Guests included numerous Johnson relatives from Loup City York Stromsburg and Gresham along with friends and extended family. Additional visits featured Carlsons Fredricksons Sundbergs and Willitses across Center and surrounding towns.
Mrs Harlan Carlson of Stromburg underwent major surgery at the hospital last Friday. Mrs A J Herrman improves and expects to return home later this week. Mr and Mrs Forest Wilcox announce the birth of an eight pound daughter, Danelle Marie at the hospital last Friday, December 9. Dick Herrmann was released from the hospital Sunday and returned home. Mrs Glenn DeLand returned home Saturday after major surgery two weeks ago.

In Osceola a district court jury hears Elmer H. Feldt of Lincoln contesting the will of Charles J. Peterson of Stromsburg. Peterson died two years ago leaving about 60 thousand dollars to be distributed among heirs in Sweden and Feldt as the sole U.S. heir. The will left 120 acres in Polk County and cash to Feldt, with Swedish heirs receiving cash bequests. Feldt challenges the will on alleged incompetency as E C Nordlund of Stromsburg administers the estate before Judge Landis. The trial began Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with extensive legal representation.
Polk County Farmers Union Co operative association will hold its annual convention at Swede Home on December 16 at 8 p m The session will include a discussion led by Carl Steelquist with participation from six locals Annual reports and officer elections follow A resolutions committee is named and refreshments will be served The organization lists about 350 member families and highlights its oil company stores and farm cooperation network within the county
The Luther League meets Thursday at 8 pm in the church parlors with the Boden families hosting the final meeting of the year. Advent Fourth Sunday events include Sunday School at 10, Morning Worship at 11, and a Christmas Prep sermon. Midnight Christmas Eve service features the Immanuel sermon.
