Osceola merchants unite to boost local trade with a fall and winter thrift auction drive. Starting next Saturday shoppers can bid on goods including groceries auto accessories and useful merchandise on the square after noon. The campaign aims to make Osceola a regional trading center as merchants promote bargains and community shopping.
Mrs Ray Wallin of Hordville died in Aurora hospital after an operation for appendicitis. Thanksgiving visits and group Methodist meetings headline regional notices. Local social events include dinners with Girl Scouts and visits from relatives. multiple deaths and medical updates are reported in the Stromsburg and Valley districts.
Shelby area residents spent Thanksgiving with relatives and friends across Nebraska. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Jack McMeekin and son from Lincoln, John Skidmore after six weeks in western Nebraska and Colorado, and Jim Reisdorff from Sidney visiting brothers before nursing duties in Omaha. A series of family and church social events followed, with multiple households hosting gatherings and a few travel notes.
E P Pike a well known Polk County resident died at his Stromsburg home Tuesday after months of illness. Born in New York City on October 5 1856 he moved to Iowa as a child and settled in Polk County in 1889. He was a Mason Scottish Rite Methodist and former county commissioner Funeral services were held today at 2 30 PM at the Stromsburg Methodist Church conducted by the Masonic fraternity.
An Osceola High School manual training class displays architectural drawings in the Osceola Dry Goods Co. windows this week showing progress in school projects. Miss Signe Samuelson and her brother Walter drove to York on business yesterday.
The South Shelby Club met at Mrs. F. Matticks home for officer elections and a furniture refinishing demonstration. A short pre program preceded refreshments of fruit salad with whipped cream cake and coffee. members expressed hope the clubs continue their work as both helpful and enjoyable.
Georgs Enelhardt moves a car of mixed stock to Omaha today. The shipment involves varied vehicles intended for the Omaha market, with transit noted as imminent.
David Potter and son Lynn of Ov ertor Nebr visited Osceola Tuesday. Mrs J H Tschauner hosted guests for Thanksgiving including the Gerhold and Keller families from Columbus and the Ludlow family of Osceola. Helen Newcomer visited Lincoln with family. Lola Ramsey came from Fort Dodge for a visit with Mrs Henry Fahnholz. Harry Musslemar and family spent Sunday with relatives in Norfolk. Thanksgiving plans included Ken Cornish and W A Cornish from Shelby and R A Cornish and family from Geneva with Bert Smith and Mrs Allen of Osceola. G L Johnson traveled to Omaha on business. Mrs J B Morfeld and daughter came from Sidney to visit Mrs Jennie Gilbert. August Jaenicke and son Carl visited York yesterday. Jack Harrison, recently released from York Hospital after appendicitis, returned home.
A local church invites all to attend services praising Christ the Redeemer. The Ladies Aid Society meets Friday in church parlors with Mrs. L. M. Shaw as hostess, and the official board gathers next Tuesday at 7 30 for its regular meeting.
Friday at 8:00 Luther League gathering hosted by J G Carlson with Grant Walgreens providing entertainment. Saturday at 10:00 confirmation class at the parsonage. Sunday at 10:00 Sunday School 11:00 English Morning Service on The Coming of the Kingdom and 7:30 Swedish Evensong on Patience. Tuesday 7:20 choir rehearsal. Thursday 8:00 Luther League entertainment hosted by C H Anderson and Arthur W Anderson families at the former home.
Mr and Mrs George Ludden and family of Lincoln visited the Edwin Johnson family Sunday. Chester Johnson and son and Walter Watts with baby joined the G J Mentink household. J A Bradford’s passing noted by Mrs Louie Johnston. Lucille Keller of Columbus stayed with Viola Tschauner on Thanksgiving. Louis Johnston and family visited Claude Timm. Joe Tschauner visited Frank Chauner in Queedla. Edwin Hedlund and Arthur Peterson hosts. Oscar Emma and Rebecca Anderson stayed with F B Samuelson of York. Adolph Nelson touring Omaha this week.
The Polk County Farmers Union met at Swede Plain Church on Monday evening November 19 with President Fredrickson presiding. Officers were re elected, resolutions against higher taxes for roads were read, related to a good roads department and tax hikes, and calls were made to inform lawmakers. Additional resolutions urged a fair tax refund, debt reduction, tariff relief on steel and aluminum, and support for farm price mechanisms aligned with the Haugen Bill.
The Osceola Woman's Club schedules its regular meeting for Monday December 6 at 7 30 p m at the schoolhouse with all members urged to attend. The Music division held a special meeting November 29 at Mrs D W McFadden s home with strong attendance. The division will study Russian Folk Songs at the next meeting. The Literature division continues the New Testament and the Drama department discusses Where But In America. Art Craft departments work on crepe paper novelties and plan waxed flowers.
Gust A. Peterson marked another milestone with a surprise party planned by his children and families on the following Sunday afternoon. He received a token gift and was wished many happy returns as lunch was served.
Mrs. Robert Sitz of Peterson Iowa arrived Wednesday evening for a visit with sister Mrs. Albert Ryan. G G Shelmadine and family of Silver Creek spent Thursday at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs F P Shelmadine. Lawrence Dexter a student at the State University came home Wednesday evening for a few days visit with his parents Mr and Mrs N H Dexter near Clarks. Florence Johnson who attends Wahoo College was home over Thanksgiving with her parents Mr and Mrs W A Johnson. Mr and Mrs W E Goodbrod and little son were guests of relatives in Seward Thursday. Ben Farris and family drove to Columbus Thursday for a few days visit with relatives. They returned home Sunday.
