Last Friday night marked the close of Polk County’s 60th annual county fair with ideal week weather and large crowds. Officials admitted initial crop fears while cutting corners to ensure a profitable outcome, but the event is expected to be financially successful as final tallies come in in the coming days. Exhibitors and fair officials receive praise for persistence under adverse conditions.
A. C. P. chairman Robert C. Taddiken reports a state telegram naming Polk County as eligible for using sweet stalk sorghums as silage while remaining non depleting. The list includes atlas, sumac, amber, orange sorghum, honey, gooseneck white african, sourless, Letoi Red, Collier McLean, Denton, Planter, Folger, Dwarf Ashburn Tricker, Sapling, Red X Colman and Fremont.
The first sheriff's sale for delinquent personal taxes will be Friday at 2 p m Sheriff Herb Person states The auction lists a 1934 four door Dodge coach registered to Clifford Koenigstein of Omaha former Sayers Tire Shop operator who closed the business without paying a 222 11 tax bill Delinquent taxes paid to date total 13933 70 with 6836 68 to the sheriff and 7097 02 to the treasurer Five deputies began their second week of work serving distress warrants in both rural and urban areas Columbus Telegram
An Osceola agricultural bulletin announces September 26 as the safe wheat planting date for Polk County Nebraska. Entomology head Mr. Swenk warns Hessian Fly risk rises, urging farmers to destroy volunteer wheat to curb fall brood hatching and reduce damage to next year's crop.
At the last regular meeting Polk County commissioners passed a resolution asking the State Game Commission to deny an open season on pheasants this year. The action followed a thorough county investigation into the situation.
Lonnie Birchfield offers lawn mowing weed cutting car washing and rugs cleaning services. He invites callers planning a public sale to use his help and to reach him at phone numbers 73 or 1271.
Five deputies approved by the county board and named by Sheriff Herb Person start serving distress warrants for delinquent personal tax payments in Platte County. Assignments include Thomas to Joliet township Henggeler to St Bernard Johnson to Walker and Carstensen to Woodville. Rhode remains in sheriff’s office mapping township locations.
Polk county farmers can raise the value of resealed corn to about 11 cents per bushel through extended loans and storage payments. Attorney Robert C. Taddiken notes 57 cent loans on 1937 and 1938 corn are extended to August 1, 1940 with cancelled interest, plus seven cents per bushel storage when delivered to the CCC. the result is a potential 11 cent per bushel gain depending on future prices. About 148,655 bushels are sealed in Polk, with only an estimated 20 percent likely to be delivered to the CCC after September 1.

Greens Chapel hosts an achievement program by Jolly Needle Workers and Little Roosters Litter 4-H Friday evening led by Imogene Hurd and Harry Obrist. Community members include Olaf Norman, Christina Bloom, Oscar Blevins, W I Christ, Ernest Hillman, Harlan Carlson, and others visiting relatives and attending events across town.
Next Sunday marks the 13th Sunday after Trinity with an 11 oclock morning service themed All our Living. Sunday School and Bible Classes meet at 10. No evening service due to the State Suez League Convention in Wa hoo with Wallace Monson and Howard Boden as delegates. Mrs L A Erickson returned from Colorado visiting her son Willard in Englewood and friends in Denver. Mr and Mrs J L Olson hosted a Sunday gathering honoring their daughter with guests including Mr and Mrs C P Hutchens of Knoxville Tennessee. About thirty five relatives attended.
The Osceola hospital treated several patients including tonsil removals for Harley Rafert and Miss Elaine Bond. Dr. McGoogan from Omaha conducted major surgeries on Mrs. R. M. McDonald and Mrs. Fred Branting. Harry Clement announced the birth of Carman Marie, a seven pound daughter, on Tuesday. Henry Bahm of Shelby was treated for severe facial lacerations from a crowbar injury. Mrs. Henry Swan and infant Sally Susan were released from the hospital on Saturday.
Miss Edyth Rosenberry daughter of Mr and Mrs Fay Rosenberry and Harold Heaston son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Heaston both of Wayland were married at the Wayland church at nine o clock Sunday morning Rev L M Albrecht pastor officiated the ceremony.
Virgil Hotchkiss sixteen son of Mr and Mrs Hubert Hotchkiss living near Utica was killed Tuesday evening when struck by a car driven by A C Morrill of Stromsburg The Morrill car was nearing another vehicle whose lights blinded the driver Arts occurred about 8 oclock while Hotchkiss and another youth walked along the highway He was taken to a York hospital where he died hours later He had formerly lived in Osceola where his parents farmed He is a grandson of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Hotchkiss of Osceola
Evelyn Hewitt and Hubert Albright were married on Monday August 28 at Grand Island. Attendants were Elaine Treadway and Harold Huse. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Hewitt Osceola, is a 1938 Osceola High School graduate who worked in Stromsburg. The groom, son of Mrs Wm Albright Amherst, attended Amherst school and now works near Stromsburg. They will reside near Stromsburg.
Motorists who received licenses in fall 1937 must renew by their expiration date. The 1937 law makes licenses valid two years from issuance, with renewals obtainable at the Polk County Treasurer’s office for 75 cents. First time applicants face exams. renewals do not. Exams planned for September October and December with state patrolmen at the Osceola courthouse.
Anna Fillman born November 3 1847 in Ockelbo Sweden died August 22 1989 at daughter’s home in Benedict Nebraska. Survived by son Henry L Fillman York and daughter Mrs Bert Cummings Benedict twelve grandchildren seven great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral held at Stromsburg Baptist Church with interment in Osceola cemetery.
Polk County 4-H clubs filled livestock quarters and booths with exhibits as swine sheep and baby beef projects drew strong interest. Winners headed to state fair Ak-Sar-Ben include Raymond Schott Elof Anderson Bob Ingalls and Fred Jensen among others. The 4-H parade song contest and the sale drew notable figures like Wallace Strong Homer Ingalls and Elmer Tooker with top bids of 28 for a ram 80 for an Angus heifer and 12.50 for a boat.
Mrs. J. A. Thompson of Osceola won first prize for best loaf at the Polk County Fair. She also received ten dollars cash from Wright Bros. Flour Mills of Brainard, Nebraska. Second prize went to Mrs. Ernest Nyquist of Osceola. Over fifty bread exhibits, 29 loaves used Big 5 Flour.
Fairview reports the Cemetery Association will meet at Mrs Laura Wilcox home on September 8 with Mae Hastings assisting. Local social notes list Mr and Mrs Dexter Haws of Lincoln visiting, Carl Bryant family visiting Rev Hamilton, Donald Heinemeyer and wife from York at parents, Mr and Mrs C L Dake and baby at Fullerton, Jackie McCormick returning to Stromsburg after visiting grandparents Mr and Mrs Wm Dake.
