Next week marks the 54th Polk County Agricultural Society fair. The piece recalls decades of community effort, hardships overcome, and a longtime county tradition that brings pride and booster spirit to Polk County residents as the fair opens.
The Wampus Sluggers meet Swede Home on Tuesday August 29 at 9 AM. Polk faces Valley after, Osceola plays Clarks on Wednesday at 9 AM. Winners advance to a 10 30 AM semifinal Wednesday. Finals set for Thursday August 31 at 10 oclock.
A parity of 13 Rebekahs gathered Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Chas Hastings home for a surprise visit. They presented a cut glass wreamer and sugar set. A lunch of pineapple sherbet wafers and coffee was served. Mrs. Herman Anderson hosted bridge luncheon Tuesday afternoon honoring her sister Mrs. Rex Newcomer of Oakland California. Mrs. Kermit Johnson won the high score prize, Mrs. Andrew Nyquist the traveling prize, and Mrs. Newcomer a guest prize.
The Iowa Nebraska Light and Power Company adopted the NRA code with an estimated annual cost of $80,009.90, effective immediately. It sets 44 hour weeks in service, merchandising and accounting, 48 hour plant weeks, minimum wages of $14 weekly in towns over 2500 and $12.50 in smaller towns, and 40 cents hourly. Robert Graham cited increased expenses from the code and the 3 percent federal tax on gross electric collections, payable by the company, plus potential tax impact over its Iowa Nebraska and Missouri properties. The firm hopes higher revenues will offset costs and will cooperate with the federal effort. A Polk County Fair feature section promotes women’s exhibits in baking, canning, cooking, home planning, and labor-saving devices at Osceola August 28–30, with a heavy poultry show and livestock displays plus club work exhibits by boys and girls.
Residents travel to fairs and visit relatives across Nebraska and Illinois. Lee Kielson and others spent time at Ray Underhill’s farm while families like the Hanss and Minnicks visited Omaha Lincoln and Chicago events. Several teachers change posts with Miss Gilger leaving for St Louis and new hires named for local schools.
Mrs Rex Newcomer of Oakland California arrived here Saturday for a visit with her sister Mrs Herman Anderson and Mr Anderson.
County agent announces open filing for wheat allotment contracts under the Triple A program. Precinct filing days run August 24–25 at High Prairie, Polk, Stromsburg, Shelby, Osceola sites. Farmers should bring production figures for 1930, 1931, 1932 and the application copy.
Mr and Mrs D C Craig and Mr and Mrs H H Wilson of Ashland spent a few days last week at the F B Kelly home. The Craigs are the parents of Mrs Kelly.
Notice to the public states that on Wednesday and Saturday evenings the siren will blow five minutes before 10 to allow people to shop in stores closing at 10. All customers in the store at 10 will be cared for. After September 1st, Wednesday closing will be at 6 PM.
Residents and visitors travel to a dozen locations including Doran Minnesota Omaha Chicago and Los Angeles. Notable names include Funkhouser Schuetz Pellinger Hess Krumbach Studley and Sayers. Many relatives visit Shelby relatives with weekend trips and church events noted. Mrs Schuetz cared for aunt Mrs Clobes while Dr Benda and Mrs Schindler attended a funeral.
Widespread support for the President’s Emergency Re employment Campaign is reported in Polk County as local NRA committees pledge full backing. Employers signing the blanket code may display the NRA emblem. citizens are urged to sign consumer cards and return them via the postmaster. County Chairman W. E. Pierson notes strong encouragement and urges immediate action.
The Victor Club met at Mrs. Russell Blevins home with most members present. Plans for the County Fair exhibit were laid. Several social visits and trips noted include Mrs. Clancy of Imperial and guests. School begins September 4 in Victor as buildings are readied for the year.
Miss Adeline Fredrickson daughter of Mr and Mrs Axel Fredrickson underwent an appendicitis operation Monday evening. Dr Harley Eklund performed it. Mrs Delmar McFadden had a major operation yesterday morning Dr Schroeder operated. Fred Schwab was operated on yesterday morning. An eight pound baby boy Lloyd Vaughn Zeleski was born to Mr and Mrs Lloyd Zeleski Monday. Dick Matheson had his tonsils removed by Dr R L Schroeder at Osceola Hospital Monday.
A group of relatives and friends surprised Mr and Mrs Oliver Johnson at the C. O. Fredrickson home for their fifth wedding anniversary. Various locals including Elsie Swanson and Doris Toline visit friends and family in nearby towns. Cecelia Wagner thanks friends for support during illness.
Mayor Pierson, in Omaha this week with NRA state chair R. L. Metcalfe, discussed securing federal aid for Osceola sewer repairs. A 30 percent grant plus a long term loan at four percent could fund the project, easing winter unemployment if approved by the state board of public works.
A group of Polk County ministers and families met at Rev Paul Melin's home last Friday for a coaching conference guiding Sun day School workers and teachers. Attendees included Rev E R Peterson Rev Rh E Pengelly Rev Stiverson Rev Wright and guest Rev J C White with his daughter Barbara and friend from Lincoln. A closing session is planned for the Stromsburg Park next Friday depending on weather.
St Andrews and Toonee residents visit kin in Columbus while many locals attend hospital events. Beloved families including Bernat, Huggier, Nebosis, and Bernt share news of hospital dismissals appendicitis surgeries and convalescence with small town reports from Columbus and Shelby.
