Osceola backs President Roosevelts reemployment plan with a local NRA drive led by W E Pierson and a public publicity team. The committee urges employers to display the NRA emblem as a patriotism badge and stresses collective effort to restore employment and economic vigor.
W E Pierson, chairman, states a sweeping movement will soon return every unemployed worker in Osceola to work, with nationwide parallel efforts underway in every city town and community.
Shelby residents report visitors from Omaha Columbus and Peabody. Alonzo Merrick and family returned from Kansas and Missouri with relatives visiting in Shelby. Dorcas Society met at the M E Church. Dean Yordy celebrated 13th birthday with a Pengelly class party. Ed Husser and Mrs Kumpf visited Shelby then headed to Illinois and the World’s Fair.
Wesley chapel urges full attendance next Sunday to elect a delegate and reserve delegate for the annual conference in Omaha on September 12. The pastor seeks one hundred percent attendance and notes many local families and visitors in community activities.
Barnett shows a motorcycle at the Polk County Fair second day with crowds watching. Officials report steady attendance as exhibitors prepare for upcoming contests and rides.
The report lists visits and gatherings in Victor area households. Oscar Fedde and family from Denver visited Mrs. Fedde’s relatives, with Mrs. A. W. Johnson returning home after a month’s stay. Rath Larson plans to work in Osceola this coming year after attending Victor School. Multiple families from Utica Center Aurora and Imperial Nebraska are noted visiting and hosting meals. A large Farmer's Union meeting at Green's Chapel served 160 people with a children’s program. Ralph Radley was hospitalized in Omaha for medical care with no operation performed yet. Choir members held a post practice social with ice cream and cake.
The notice lists opening at 7:00 A M and closing at 6:06 P M daily, with Wednesday and Saturday nights until 10:00 P M, adjusted after September 1st and December 15 to 25 10:00 P M. Exclusions include garages bakeries cafes oil stations Cruz stores hotels hospitals barber shops beauty parlors and doctors offices. Mayor W E P I R S O N governs.
On Sunday August 20 Dr M E Gilbert will preach at Valley Church at 10 am and at Fairview Church at 11 20 am. A quarterly conference follows the service with a basket dinner in the Hall. Officers will be elected and plans for the coming year made.
Mary E Michener Campbell died at her Gresham home after several weeks illness. She leaves eight children and two brothers among 18 grandchildren. Funeral at Presbyterian Church Gresham with interment in Gresham Cemetery. Her husband Johnston J Campbell died Aug 12 1930.
Miss Verna Maye Klein daughter of Rev J A Klein and Mrs Klein of Clatonia Nebraska married Paul Morris son of Mr and Mrs T Morris of Daw son Nebraska at 4 PM August 6 in the Clatonia Methodist Church. Ceremony performed by the bride’s father with sister Helen Klein as bridesmaid and sister Lubertha Klein singing. A reception followed at the Klein home and the couple will reside in Kennard Nebraska.
Lutheran notes announce Luther League meeting at the church hosted by the Branting family. Confirmation Class gathers Saturday at 1 30 for instruction. Harmony Society serves ice cream pie ala mode and coffee at the courthouse lawn Saturday evening. Sunday services include Sunday School Bible Classes at 9 19 a m English Worship at 11 and Vespers at 4 30. Teachers meet Monday at the parsonage. Thursday Harmony Society meets at Miss Vivian Nelsons home. Paul Melin, pastor.
Local committees announce publication of lists of business and professional men and volunteers who signed consumer agreements. Lists will be posted in post office lobby and printed in newspapers. Walter Nedbosis undergoes emergency appendix operation at St Marys Hospital Columbus Monday morning. Albert A Gabriel family visit. Lucille Eller hosts Junior Girl's Club Sunday. Elizabeth Nebosis and Hilda of Columbus visit Wednesday. Bridge Celebrations draw locals Thursday. Harmony Club picnics near Duncan Sunday. Regina Tschauner returns home after weeks with sister Mrs Albert Schlesinger St Edwards. Eller and Birkel families fish at Torczons Lake last week. Various visits to Nebosis Gabriel Bernt homes noted.
Mrs Delmar Richmond entered Osceola Hospital Monday for treatment. Pearl Keebaugh had her tonsils removed by Dr R L Schroeder at Osceola Hospital yesterday morning. Calmar Boden underwent tonsil removal with Dr Harley Eklund yesterday. Miss Althea Zang assists at the hospital this week. Miss Leona Nantkes entered yesterday for minor surgery. Dr Eklund removed Jean Hotchkiss’ tonsils Friday morning. Jean is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Hotchkiss.
The Polk County W C T U Convention will be held at the M E Church in Shelby Nebraska on Wednesday August 23 with sessions at 10:00. The forenoon covers officer reports addresses music and a memorial service. The afternoon plans include officer elections the Baby Recruit service and a S T L Demon stration plus music and more addresses. Mrs Hattie Sylvester state worker from Omaha will attend and speak at both sessions. The public is invited.
Complaints report motorists ignore traffic rules in the city especially Stop signs. The mayor warns that Stop means Stop and nothing else and urges strict observance of speeding and Stop signs across the city.
Local trendsetter G. T. Ray unveils new fashion when he fits sunglasses with current rim designs. Eyewear shops report rising interest as customers seek bold frames and sharp looks.

Owen Johnson returns from Chicago where he visited relatives and the Century of Progress Exposition. Numerous residents travel to Omaha York Denver and Chicago for fairs and family visits. Rialto Theatre installs sound on film equipment. Stromsburg Bank resumes unrestricted operation as a Federal Reserve member. Community visits include the Andersons Lambs Carlsons and Lunners. Morris Strong arrives from Pennsylvania for a few weeks. Miss Izetta Barnard visits Stromsburg friends.
The Methodist Church reports steady Sunday School turnout with 184 attendees last Sunday and ongoing morning worship. Next Sunday a special Epworth League Institute program features five young ladies Jean Backlund Ruth Zang Katherine Kieny Marjorie Dunn and Jeanette Frasier with group singing and talks by Frasier on the theme Questen for High Ideals. Epworth League Service slated for seven. Fourth Quarterly Conference set for next Wednesday evening with Rev. Johansen presiding.
Polk county 4-H members and families are invited to a picnic at Osceola City Park on Tuesday August 22 starting at 11 a.m. The program includes a Kitten Ball tournament and swimming at the Osceola pool. All club folks urged to attend.
Baseball fans will enjoy three days of Polk County League action at the county fair. Shelby Stromsburg Osceola and Silver Creek are the top four vying for the championship with Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday slated for two games each to determine the final showdown. Improved seating promises faster, cozier viewing.
Polk county wheat growers will soon receive official application blanks for the wheat adjustment contract. The county committee and secretary F B Kelly are compiling a near complete mailing list from community meetings and county records. Eligible farmers include those who grew or had wheat in base years 1930, 1931, and 1932, with blanks requesting landowner and tenant signatures, farm location sketches, and historical acreages and production.
