Osceola golf course hosts a home talent contest running through the week with two flights of 16 and 12 players. Prominent locals have already been eliminated as elimination matches determine the pace toward the Sunday final.
Fairview Church hosts an all day service on Sunday August 26 with dinner and spiritual feast. District superintendent Rev. Bryant Howe preaches in the forenoon an outside speaker speaks in the afternoon and Dr Cissel from Omaha attends the evening service. The 4th quarterly conference accompanies the event with special music at all services and an invitation to bring guests.
The Stoner Community Club hosted families on Friday August 17 at Albert Sharrett’s residence with about 90 attendees. Guests included former Osceola resident Mrs. Etta Bausch now of Lincoln. Women prepared dinner featuring fried chicken and ice cream. men played boxing, pitching horseshoes, and pie confiscation in the afternoon.
Public Library announces a gift from H. H. Campbell of National Geographic issues for 1919 to 1922, to be bound and preserved. The library invites further gifts of magazines from individuals or clubs, and notes St. Nicholas Magazine as another valuable binding candidate for the collection.
The Dunn family gathered in York for a Sunday reunion and picnic dinner. Miss Eva Dunn, a Minneapolis stenographer, is home on vacation joining the family gathering and completing the circle of Charles Dunn’s children.
The Woman's Club held its annual season start with a reception for new members at Mrs. Wm. Merrick's home. Departments on music literature and drama reported, leaders gave typical lessons, social refreshments followed. Members listed include Mesdames Frank H. Glen Hubbard reached the city last Thursday from Minatitlan Veracruz Mexico where he spent the past year with Aguila Oil Co a Shell Holland British concern. He worked in their chemical laboratory and previously taught chemistry at the University of Nebraska. Hubbard will stay about a month and shares insights about Obregon and political figures now out of power.
Sheriff Van Hoosen visited Lincoln to report Jack Logan at the penitentiary for a two year sentence for the theft of the Beebe automobile in this county. Logan has already served eight months of his term in the county jail due to space shortages at Lincoln.

Shelby and Osceola residents travel to Lincoln and neighboring towns for business and leisure. Many attend gatherings, shop changes, picnics, and church events while others report visits with relatives and trips to Denver, Omaha, and Stromsburg. A local baseball tourney drew crowds as David City and Rising City teams played strong games.
Swan Johnson born November 4 1856 in Sweden died August 20 1923 at York hospital aged 66. Immigrated to Alton Illinois at age eleven then homesteaded in Phelps County Nebraska. Survived by wife Hannah Clay and eleven children. siblings and grandchildren. funeral services planned at his Osceola home and Swede Home church.
An Aug 16 letter from Yakima, Washington, to Mrs. John Burgess recounts a family auto tour to Los Angeles. The journey included Portland, the Columbia Highway, San Francisco, a week in Los Angeles, San Diego, and a crossing into Mexico before Villa’s death. The party faced broken springs, hotel stays, sightseing, and warnings about safety in northern Mexico.
The Exposition is in full sway with paved sidewalks and cement walks at the Fair Grounds. Crowds from Nebraska enjoy educational and recreational exhibits as fair week proceeds despite showers.
An eastbound Union Pacific train struck a car near Buckley Park in Stromsburg yesterday afternoon. No serious injuries occurred to occupants of the car, though all were bruised. Driver Eric Forslund and passengers include his wife, daughter of Mrs Hartwig Flodman, her young son, and Mrs Frank P. Anderson all from Polk County. The car skidded along the tracks and overturned after impact as both vehicles moved slowly toward the camp meeting at the park.
Word reached Reed Dawson and Mrs Wescoat of the death of their brother E J Dawson in Des Moines the morning of the report. The funeral was held Saturday by the Des Moines Masonic lodge with interment in the Masonic cemetery. He was 69, ill for months, his wife having died earlier, and he is survived by two sons Mrs Wescoat and Mr Dawson of this place and three other brothers.
Supt. C BE Andrews drove to Burwell on Monday and returned that evening with Mrs. Andrews who had been staying at the ranch near there for part of the summer.
Citizens must cut weeds along sidewalks and avoid depositing debris in gutters. Those who have littered gutters are ordered to remove it at once or the city will remove it at owner expense. Authority stated by Fred Schwab chair, Streets & Alleys Committee.
The Nebraska crop report of August 8 projects a heartening peak in corn yields, easing fears of hot winds and promising one of Nebraska’s best prospects in years. W. E. Pratt visited Lincoln on business yesterday.
The thirty hour coast to coast air mail service started Tuesday with planes passing Timm Field north of the city. Eastbound and westbound arrivals in Omaha are around midnight and 1:00 AM respectively, with night trips across Nebraska. If on time they meet about thirty minutes west of Omaha, and the flights have so far run with little delay.
Attorney H. C. Beebe traveled to Lincoln on a legal errand. Glenn Yeltman visited Bayard to see Rev. Alverson and Mrs. Hannell. Miss Hattie joined a Colorado Springs vacationing party. Mrs. Lou H. Myers of Denver stayed in town for a few days. Martin Silverstrand rode to Lincoln on Carson Auto Co. business. Miss Mary Anderson visited Watkins with her sister. Chas. Miller headed to David City after the summer work. Don Byers and Phil Campbell couples enjoyed a fishing trip at Lake Erickson. Dr. Leo Karrer and wife from Omaha visited Jos. Karrer’s family. Mary Engelhardt visited Hastings then headed home to Long Beach California.
The Hagenbeck-Wallace show comes to Columbus on Friday August 31 with new stunts from trained animals and headline European acts. A free street parade over a mile long will start Friday morning and a downtown ticket office at Pollock drug store will sell tickets at show-ground prices.
