York state fire inspector Harry Requartte visited Osceola to assess fire risks and urged removal of antique junk piles in business areas. He noted high insurance rates tied to neighboring hazards and praised recent cleanup orders while calling for a vigorous abatement campaign.

In a final Tuesday round H. J. Tex defeated A. J. Inness to claim the tournament honors. The first nine holes were close, but Inness faltered late as Tex surged ahead with solid hitting and field play. The management plans another similar event with a cup and additional trophies in the near future.
B F Pointer a Civil War veteran and Polk county resident marked his 80th birthday at Shelby home on August 26. About 37 relatives attended a lawn dinner with cafeteria style service and ice cream and cake in the afternoon. Pointer has lived in Shelby 24 years and has three children nearby.
Fred Anderson visited Polk on Friday while Clarence Erickson is on the sick report. Several residents traveled to Hastings and Lincoln for business and visits. The Stromsburg schools will open in September, and various residents returned from trips to St. Joe, Omaha, Denver, and Okoboji with family and friends.
Polk H T Frazier of York was in Polk on business Saturday. Mrs Gae wahell visited friends at Aurora and Giltner Sunday. Oscar Johnson sold an Overland touring car to Chas Bodine last week. Mrs D B Carter and son returned from the Lutheran hospital at York. S W McDaniel and Kenneth Samuels made a business trip to Shelby Monday. Rev Deckham of Chapman filled the pulpit at the Baptist church Sunday evening. H M McGuffin and family attended the editors convention in Omaha last week. Mr and Mrs Parker of Harvard visited in the W A Lindburg home Saturday and Sunday. Rev Johnson of Holdrege preached at the chautauqua tent Sunday morning before a large audience. Mrs Richmond and daughter Helen of Fullerton visited over the weekend. Chief of Police Abe Mallonee and Oscar Johnson visited the county seat Saturday morning. David Andraen and wife and Aug Nelson and wife returned from Illinois Saturday morning. Albert Peterson went to Beatrice Sunday to purchase supplies. Violet Gustafson, Hazel Johnson, Mike Husig and Stub Lindquist visited Stromsburg Thursday. Mrs Marsh came from Idaho to visit her sister and brother. An ice cream social was planned at John Adelson home Friday evening August 31. Floyd Hedburg left for Big Pine California after visiting here. Ernest Newton and family of Pilot Mound Mo spent the week visiting Polk. Mr and Mrs Bert Bottum of Benedict and Mr and Mrs Harold Bottum of York were guests of A W Shafer Sunday. Rev Lindburg left for Swedish Conference at Arnold Nebr then to Sioux City IA. Mrs Emil Peterson and children moved from Sidney to Polk into Fred Johnsons house. Dr Chas Jeffrey left for Rawlins Wyoming after visiting relatives.Continued on last page.

Sunday school attendance rises. Miss Irma Nuquist leads the league at 7. Ladies Aid meets Friday with Mrs. L. M. Shaw hosting.
Ada Nelson born June 30 1912 at Litchfield Nebraska died August 20 1923 in Denver Colorado from blood poisoning. Survived by parents Verle siblings and grandparents with services held August 23 at Edgewater Community Church. Buried Lawn Hill Denver. Marjorie Carol Harris born May 20 1920 died August 27 1923 aged three years three months seven days. Survived by mother sister and brother and relatives. Funeral at home with Rev Carter and Rev Neal. buried beside her father and twin brother.
The Elmer Johnsons near Swede Home east of town are completing a 30 by 38 bungalow with sun parlor and full basement. Builder Wm Deland reports oak floors built in buffet and porches, with occupancy expected by mid September.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Englehardt left on the previous Wednesday for California where they plan to be away for the winter George Berck Jr will drive the Englehardt auto through in a few weeks and they expect to tour the state during their absence friends here wish them a pleasant sojourn in the far west
The county W C T U convened at Shelby on August 14 and 23 with seven delegates from Stromsburg and six from Osceola. Mrs A C Anderson of Stromsburg presided, reports showed good finances, and a chicken dinner was served. Officers elected were Etta Augustine Shelby president, Mrs A C Anderson Stromsburg vice president, Grace Hanson Osceola secretary, and Florence Reece Shelby treasurer. The gathering adjourned with an invitation to meet in Osceola in 1924.
The Ladies Aid hosts a social on the church lawn Thursday evening August 30 with a men’s program. No Sunday school next Sunday but all ages meet at 10:30. Evening service at 8:00 Swedish. Prayer meeting at church September 5 led by Pastor Adolf Serenius.
A birthday anniversary celebration was held last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schnasse with guests including Mrs. Freda Schnasse Geo Englehardt Elias Timm and their families. A fine dinner followed a merry gathering in honor of Aug 27 birthdays and the anniversary of Elias Timm’s arrival.
Red Cross workers will demonstrate first aid and life saving at the Nebraska State Fair in the mercantile building. Captain Felix M. Janovsky from Chicago will supervise on grounds and in exhibit rooms with public health nurses and junior service volunteers contributing.
Angelo Moretina, born in Italy, enlisted in World War I at 35, was injured, and became a vocationally disabled veteran. He received U S Veterans Bureau training in acetylene welding, earned $145 monthly during retraining, then started his own shop and expressed pride in the American flag.
Harry Hennings has the excavation completed for a fine new house on his farm in the valley. The bungalow style dwelling will measure 28 by 38 feet with a full basement and all modern conveniences. Will Deland and his carpenters will carry out the work.
Under the County Agent’s direction the Polk County Women’s clubs will place their clothing exhibit for the state fair this week and also display it at the Polk County Fair.
Word has arrived of the marriage of Clyde Milks son of Mr and Mrs Milks formerly of this city to Miss Bettie Poulston of Lincoln. The wedding took place last Saturday with Mr and Mrs C A Larson of Stromsburg in attendance.
Representatives of the Ku Klux Klan held a meeting in the city at the southeast corner of the square last night. Rev. John Wesley Bates spoke while robed in Klan attire to a streetful crowd that listened to the order's principles.

Elvera Blosm hosts Ruby Anderson, Ruby Sands, Prince Anderson, and Helen Severine. Mrs. A Teegerstrom celebrated with neighbors after a birthday surprise.
