Nebraska approves tax hikes despite local talk

State Tax Commissioner William E. Peters announces a 0.5 percent sales tax increase to 3 percent and a rise in individual income tax to 17 percent retroactive to January 1, 1976. Corporate rates shift to 4.25 percent on the first 25 000 and 4.675 percent thereafter, with withholding at 17 percent starting September 1 1976.

Young Darrell Andelt Grows 11 Foot Sunflower

Darrell Andelt, a young gardener, grew a sunflower over 11 feet tall with a 13 inch diameter bloom and leaves over 18 inches long. He plans a Friday afternoon carnival for muscular dystrophy on August 27 with local business sponsors and prize contributions. more details will follow.

Polk County farms show 1974 market value of ag products

The 820 Polk County farms reported 1974 agricultural sales totaling 63,712,000 in a Census Bureau preliminary release. Farms with 2,500 plus in sales numbered 766, accounting for 63,676,000 of the total, with average farm size rising to 349 acres and value per acre up to 625 dollars. Livestock and poultry sales and crop sales contributed the rest.

Band members urged to report with instruments Monday

OHS Band Director Steve Smolik requests all band members to report with instruments to the high school music room at 10:30 a.m. on Monday August 23. Incoming freshmen and students needing a uniform change should report at 9 a.m.

Community calendar entries list events at Swede Home church Museum Lions Mental Health Rebekahs and firemen activities. Sixty Senior Citizens met at St Paul Lutheran with Homer Fellows 96 as oldest attendee and Carita Peterson Rachel Bachenberg led singing. Esther Fellows won the door prize. Next meeting September 20 at St Vincent Hall.

Osceola Library Earns Nebraska Commission Honor

The Osceola City Library was recognized for achievement with a B plus for meeting eight standards. A framed certificate will be displayed, and gifts totaling 80 dollars in books and memorials were received this summer from local families including the Gross nicklaus, Yungdahl, Martin, Wieseman, and Carl Wieseman families. A Memorial Fund exists to support library resources and services.

Tournaments League Play Dominated Club Calendar

Twenty one senior citizens attended an invitational golf meet at Ryan Hill. Winners spanned multiple flights for both men and women with prize recipients named, plus a Calcutta Club Tournament result for both genders. Golf league action followed with low scores and several ties. Library donations and overdue-book concerns were noted in Osceola community notices.
