The USDA Food Stamp Program has operated in Polk County for a year. An average of 72 people per month participated, with August 1970 to July 1971 purchases totaling 11 541 dollars in stamps and 22 897 dollars in purchasing power. Midshipman Stas Returns From Pacific Cruise Aboard Chicago
Midshipman Nicholas J. Stas husband of former Miss Nancy J. Johansen of Osceola Nebraska completed a summer training cruise aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Chicago in the Pacific. The ship reached San Diego on August 4 after six weeks off the California coast and Hawaii. He rotated through engineering weapons and operations on the job training as a member of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Nebraska.

Jim Wilson Named Honorary Member by Soil Society
James Wilson of Polk Nebraska, prominent native grass seed producer and writer, was named an Honorary Member of the Soil Conservation Society of America at a banquet closing the three day annual meeting in Columbus Ohio. Society president Einar Roger presented the award citing Wilson’s efforts to promote native grasses on eroded land and his nationwide speaking and writing on the topic. Wilson, a University of Nebraska graduate, has farmed near Polk since 1955 and leads campaigns to plant native grasses in areas that produce wild hemp or marijuana.

Leroy D. Piper 58 of Stromsburg died Sunday noon at York General Hospital after illness. A carpenter contractor, he had lived in Stromsburg since 1960. Survivors include his wife a son two sisters and a grandchild. Services were Wednesday at Stromsburg United Methodist Church with burial Arborville Cemetery.

Jerome Wilcox aged 33 son of Mr and Mrs Bill Wilcox of Stromsburg was found dead in Columbus Sunday by his brother Duane of Gresham. Graveside services for the immediate family were held Monday at Silver Creek Cemetery and memorial services were held in Stromsburg on Wednesday morning. Cause of death is listed as undetermined.

Band Council Meeting Sets Practice Times At High School
Band parents and Band Council representatives met in the High School music room Monday evening. Citizenship Course Report from 1971 4 H Short Course
