Osceola group reviews options for expansion including a two room addition at the south end or three rooms at the north and west corners. Budget concerns loom as residents consider long term needs and a possible local high school. Burwell builds a new high school at about 680000. City budget hearing set Friday at City Hall with invitation for questions.
Julie Tyrrell of Norfolk will run Home Service in Osceola Shelby David City Rising City and Garrison for schools and appliance dealers. She will visit homes on ranges dryers and gas grills to assist homemakers with gas appliances. Julie has 12 years with Northwestern Public Service in South Dakota and 4 years with Cengas, effective immediately per district manager Allen Cameron.
Osceola schools set August 30 as opening day with 8 30 a m doors and 8 40 a m classes for the district. High school registration runs August 25 and 26 from 9 a m to 4 p m. Football practices start August 23 ahead of September 10 Scotia trip. Insurance options offered by Mutual of Omaha while Union Casualty drops coverage. Lunch price 40 cents with 3 cents extra milk.
Due to lack of a quorum the council could not meet officially last Thursday. The Mayor and City Attorney met with attending citizens and appointed Jim Lewis and Charles Roberts as a fact finding committee to investigate possibilities for purchasing an ambulance in the future with Roberts as chairman.
East Central Nebraska Ag Alumni Association invites alumni and families from Boone Nance Platte Colfax Butler Merrick Hall Howard Polk Hamilton counties to a picnic at Central City city park on Sunday August 22. Attendees should bring food drinks and their own table service. Serving will begin at 1 00 p.m.
The Communications Workers of America AFL-CIO and Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company reached a three year contract effective August 2. Negotiations began May 5. The agreement raises weekly wages by 7.50 to 23.00 this year with rising scales through years two and three plus cost of living adjustments. Health care, pension, vacation, an extra holiday and wage classification revisions are included. Union committee members and company representatives are named.
Garland defeated Papillion 2 0 to win the Nebraska Semi Pro Baseball Tournament at Stromsburg on Wednesday night. The victory propels Garland to the national tournament in Wichita Kansas on August 13.
Osceola stays in first in the Central Nebraska Baseball League after a 19-3 rout of David City on Sunday night. Pitchers Waldo Peterson Marion Bernt and Bob Prokop powered an eight hit game while Rex Grossnicklaus caught. Wayne Peterson Dana Trofholz and Mike Metzner surrendered 15 hits as Heffner caught. Osceola leads with 10-2 Silver Creek 9-3 Fullerton 1-4 Humphrey 1-6 Columbus 4-17 David City 4-1 St. Edward 3-9 Genoa. Osceola visits Fullerton next Sunday.
Former Osceolan Leonard Iwan and wife Marilyn purchase 4 year old gelding Windy Maker for 3500 at Oakland Park in March. Windy Maker has earned nearly 10000 for the Iwans early in the racing season. Leonard, son of Mrs. Roseman, began racing as a teen with the Van Berg stable and later worked with Columbus outfits before starting his own stable with Marilyn and her sister Carolyn.
A memorandum from the State Department of Agriculture bans horses and other equines from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Mississippi, California, Alabama, Georgia and Florida or any federally quarantined state from entering Nebraska. The embargo lasts until rescinded by the Nebraska Bureau of Animal Industry. Other states’ horses may enter only with a permit and an official health certificate issued within 24 hours before departure.
Mae McVeigh died Friday night in her Osceola Hotel apartment. She leaves Art McVeigh and daughters Naomi Kraus and Sister Joan Michael, plus Cyril, 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and four sisters. Services were at St Mary Cathedral Grand Island, with burial there.
A Nebraska Petroleum Marketers spokesman in Lincoln told oil jobbers and fuel suppliers that the August 27 effective date requires payment of road fuel taxes within 90 days of purchase. The law imposes a fine of 25 to 500 dollars or 30 to 90 days in jail per offense and urges retailers to informing customers about the changes.

The Legion sponsored midget baseball squad defeated Gresham 7 to 6 last Wednesday at the fair grounds diamond to finish the year with an 8 and 2 mark. Osceola led early and held on as Waco leads the league with 9 and 1. The team heads to Waco Friday for the league tournament opener against the Benedict Shelby winner at 8 30 p.m.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Sacred Heart School Auditorium in Shelby on Wednesday September 1. Officials say there is a dire need for blood and urge all eligible donors to participate. Mrs. Merle Johnson becomes head cook for the Osceola Schools hot lunch program, having assisted for three years.
A three day effort will be made this week August 12 14 to prepare the first half of the Osceola Centennial Book for the press. The committee meets daily from 9 a.m. at the Methodist Church Social Room and invites volunteers to attend and submit short resumes of civic organizations.
Lowell Barr leaves East Osceola for Shel by. Arthur and Mrs Johansen relocate from a farm northeast of Osceola to the former Robert Stohl house in South Osceola. The Johansens’ former home is vacated by Mrs. Robert Johansen and children who return to Beaver Falls Pa. The Campbell family moves from Allen Nebraska to the Verna Rhodes home. Campbell takes Glenn Green’s Nebr Public Power post. Rhodes resides in the Mrs Russell Snugg home awaiting Auburn living quarters completion.
The Nebraska Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults begins the 10-day Camp Easter Seal session at Camp Jefferson near Fairbury. Forty-two Nebraska teenagers join the camp this week, led by Gary Corn of Omaha. Jo Ella Stromberg of Polk County attends.
Owners of aircraft must file a federal use tax return Form 4638 by August 31. The tax year runs July 1 to June 30, with additional returns for aircraft used after July. Jet aircraft pay 25 dollars plus 3 1/2 cents per pound of maximum certified takeoff weight. non jets over 2,500 pounds pay 25 dollars plus 2 cents per pound.
The Polk County 4-H livestock judging contest selects a team to represent at the state level. Top seniors include Mike Treffer 364 points and Ken Cannon 360, with multiple others in the top ten. Junior division leaders were Gaylen Schmaker and Lori Rosenquist tied at 263.
The Legion sponsored Pony team clinched the League regular season with 9 wins and 1 loss, then secured the League tournament championship for the second year running. A 11-1 overall record marks their season before five players age out and move to the Midget team in 1972: Dale Roehrs, Rue Johnson, Davy Nelson, Doyle Nelson, and Jon Girard.
Navy Airman Stephen V. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph E Johnson of Stromsburg Nebraska, returns to his home base in Brunswick Maine after a four month deployment with Patrol Squadron 10 to the Mediterranean. He was based at Naval Air Facility Sigonella in Sicily. He previously attended Trinity College in Deerfield Illinois.
Librarian Miriam Carey announces the Summer Reading Program finishes August 21. Children must finish books and discuss them with the librarian by that date. Certificates will be awarded August 21 for those who finished early. those finishing on August 21 will receive certificates later.
Alvin Ray Cederberg and John A. McCormick of Osceola are among roughly 400 UNL students who earned all A’s for 12 or more credit hours in the second semester of the 1970 71 academic year.

Shelby will host a men's softball tournament from Friday August 13 to Monday August 16. Friday games feature Tennages Mets vs Standard Chemical at 7 p.m. and Clarks vs A B Lounge at 8 30. Saturday 8 30 pits Stan's Bar against Stromsburg. Sunday playoffs start at 6 00 with Augustin Ranch vs the Friday winner, then 8 p.m. semi finals, final at 8 30 Monday. Also death of Joseph E Simanek of David City aged 80 with services at St Mary Catholic Church David City.
