The Herrmann family gathering in Osceola attracted 65 members with a noon picnic at the Methodist Church. A program led by Rev Matthew Herrmann followed, and visits to the family cemetery and district school were noted as part of the community ties renewed.
A two inch, two hour rain last Thursday flooded low spots including the White Way near the depot and the Gospel Ridge access road. Waters subsided Friday with minimal damage seen, though many cellars showed evidence of the downpour. The county received scattered showers aiding corn prospects. Mrs. Louis Berggren and Mildred Brooke hosted a bridge party for Mrs. Homer Batty of Mott, ND, as Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Clark return from National City, California.
Osceola closed its Chautauqua Sunday evening with a Mardi Gras players concert. The 1927 season was praised as one of the best, and local backers signed 50 Osceola citizens to a 1928 return contract. Guarantors previously bore $1 liability, now capped at $250 under the new agreement.
Tom Meacham and Son Vance left for Minneapolis expecting a week away. Mrs Meacham and Mrs Christian will return with them after two weeks away. Lou Collier hosts a Shenandoah niece while family visits. Geo Buchta bought a Whippet last Thursday. Several families attended Chautauqua in Fullerton. John and C C McCormick returned from Chicago and Iowa travels. Pauline Parris hosted a Glenwood visitor. Harve McCormick and others drove to Lincoln to see Mrs Gubser in hospital. Helen Dake returned from Gothenburg and Kearney. R Stahlhout and wife from Edwardsville stayed several weeks. Mrs Stahlhout is Hilbert Buchta’s sister. Calmar Dunn family and Mina Buchta left for Lake Erickson.
The church urges members to avoid wilful absence from services and invites nonmembers to join as a church home. Begin Sunday with Sunday School at ten, attend morning and evening services, and help ensure a strong annual report due by early September. W. F. M. S. meets next Tuesday with Mrs. Ellen Moore for Mite Box opening and large attendance expected.
Entries are arriving for the 1928 Nebraska wheat yield contest as farmers prepare for next year. Any Nebraskan over 18 growing ten acres of specified winter wheat varieties may enter and be recognized if they meet the goal. The contest results will be announced during the Nebraska Crop Growers Association winter meetings in January.
A parade of local visits and social events fills Stromsburg as Miss Virginia Parker of Lexington visits Miss Julia Presson. Residents travel to nearby towns for rodeos, hospital visits, and family gatherings across Nebraska and Wisconsin.
John F Schmoker born February 18 1872 in Interlachen Switzerland came to America with parents in 1874. He married Lillian Bense in 1906, moved to Star City Saskatchewan in 1913, illness in March and death on August 12 after hospital care in Tisdale. Funeral August 14 with burial in Star City Cemetery. Survived by wife two brothers and two sisters. Howard Yates Osceola Nebraska chiropractor references patient contact.
A seven pound son was born August 11 at St Joseph's Hospital Alton IL to Mr and Mrs Philip Jacoby. The infant is the couple's first child and awaits the Jacoby family reunion at Brighton IL August 19 with over 180 relatives expected. Grandparents are C J Jacoby and Herrmann families of Osceola Nebraska. Mrs Philip Jacoby was Ruth Herrmann before marriage.
Mrs Gregg visited and renewed farm plans as Walter Morys rents the farm. John Schmoker died in Sasakatchewan Canada. burial there. John Bernt, son of Joe Bernt, died. funeral at St Andrew's Church. Dorothy Anderson oper ated in York hospital. Arvid Anderson's family involved.
Miss Mildred Casselberry returns from Lincoln after a few days with friends. Raymond Beebe spends weekend at Grand Island. Mrs Myra Crozier leaves for Oskaloosa Iowa for Nazarene Assembly. D H Bull to open short order eating house south of Albers' garage. Thornton Miller of LaMar Colorado visits Clyde Babcock home. Mr and Mrs Thomas Hattle and Miss Cleo Curry leave for a Colorado vacation. Mrs Alice Shay arrives from Glendale California to visit Shelby relatives. Miss Bess Evans of Fremont visits Mawhor home. Dr Hugh McMeekin of Overton Nebraska visits with his mother Mrs James McMeekin. Mrs George Blevins Sr and daughter Rachel drive to Omaha meeting Raymond Dryden of Grant City Missouri. Mr Hollis and Mrs Koehler of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, J L Petersons relatives, visit. Mrs Wm Scott and son Earl travel to Kimball Nebraska then Boulder Colorado to visit George Brigham family. Mrs Wm McKeag staying with John Inness. Vance Lindgren goes to Hardville for a day. Thomas Henry weighing 9 pounds born to Mr and Mrs Henry Jauch. Mr and Mrs T D Anderson of Wilsonville Nebraska visit Ruby McMeekin. Miss McMeekin accompanies them to Lincoln.
Mrs. Etta Gubser died yesterday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital Lincoln after an operation. The body was brought to Osceola last evening. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Presbyterian Church with Rev Collier of the MBE Church officiating.
Mr and Mrs Fred Bloom and baby of Seward Mrs Jack Dickerson and baby and Ned and Irene Nicolaus of Staplehurst were guests of the Ted Nicolaus family Sunday.
A reception honored Rev. and Mrs. Paul Melin, the new minister and his wife, at the Lutheran Church on Tuesday evening. Speeches by Rev. Sward and Rev. Sord, a close program, a purse of nearly 200 dollars for Rev. Melin and a roses bouquet for Mrs. Melin, and a two course luncheon followed. Rev. Melin comes from St. Peters Minnesota and was ordained in Omaha in June.
Paul Engelhardt came in yesterday morning to call on the trade here and visit his parents. He has just returned from a trip to St. Louis.
Mrs. Dave Carlson and her young child escaped serious harm when their Buick plunged 15 feet into a roadside ditch after failing to cross a bridge west of the depot. A little girl suffered minor scratches while the rest of the family remained uninjured. The car caught fire but was extinguished by town volunteers as heavy rain swelled the ditch and submerged the vehicle.

Plans are made to begin the agricultural segment of the University of Nebraska radio program around September 1. A six week schedule is being formed and the full year’s program will be announced once finalized. Hours are expected to match last year’s timing.
