Amateur swimmers en route from Philadelphia after the national AAU swimming meet stopped at Osceola for about three hours. The 15 to 20 year old group swam 300 to 400 lengths practicing all strokes. Gary Heinrich, son of coach A C Heinrich, a noted 400 meter swimmer who broke the old world record, was among the group.
Mrs Don Byers and Mrs Phil Campbell hosted 35 guests at a dessert supper and miscellaneous shower at the Byers home honoring Miss Mary Gaile Sigler. Her marriage to Rev James Tomasek Jr will take place August 18.

Osceola’s baseball team edged Shelby 4 to 3 on the local diamond last Sunday evening with Burt Brazee and Harold Grossnicklaus as battery. The team next played Silver Creek Wednesday, results to appear next week. The Midget team lost 19 to 7 to Stromsburg on Stromsburg’s diamond with Larry Dean Miley and Gary Rodene pitching. reports remain favorable despite the setback.
Mrs. Addie E. Austin, 88, died Wednesday morning at an Omaha hospital. The body was brought to Osceola for services at Kepner Funeral Home Friday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Osceola Cemetery beside Mr. Austin. Survivors include two daughters. The Austins formerly ran a Osceola grocery store.
Robert Miller resigns from Osceola Implement Company after ten months and opens his own tractor repair shop in Osceola. The business occupies the former Reece Implement building, one door north of the Farmers Oil Station. Miller previously worked for Reece Tractor & Equipment Co., bringing years of experience.
4-H awards honored exhibitors at the county fair across Farm Individual Clothing Foods and Homemaking divisions. Blue and purple ribbons were awarded to top performers including Dar win Anderson Linda Johnson Kay Anderson Karen Stevens Cheryl Burke and more. Team awards went to Anne Dunn Beverly Wieseman and others with red ribbons to several groups. Judging results list many names under Beginning Foods Advanced Foods and Safety sections with multiple blue purple and red distinctions.
Approximately 345 students received diplomas at Nebraska University graduation exercises on Friday August 2. Among graduates were Polk county students Miss Mary Gaile Sigler daughter of Mr and Mrs Dewey Sigler of Osceola earned a Master of Arts from the graduate college. Kenneth Ericson of Stromsburg earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration and Marland Adelson of Stromsburg earned a Master of Education from Teachers College.
Osceola Hardware and Appliance adds Gary Conrad son of Ray and Maggie Conrad to the family business. Gary and his wife and child moved to Osceola after purchasing the Mable Anderson residence in east Osceola. The store will keep the Osceola Hardware and Appliance name as Ray aims to improve service.
Polk County sales of Series E and H bonds at 34 percent interest reached $27,119 in July. Through January to July, county totals hit $234,363, 50.7 percent of the 1957 quota, while Nebraska citizens statewide totaled $50,347,329, 57.5 percent of the goal.
The extension club hosts its annual picnic at Osceola Park on Wednesday afternoon August 21 with Mrs. Robert Sigler Jr and Mrs. Francis Urban as hostesses. The Garden Club meets August 20 at Mrs. Fred Bond's home with Vacation Memories as roll call and Bond leading the program. The Polk County Farmers Union Picnic occurs August 21 at 6 00 p m at Buckley Park Stromsburg with Orville Hennings as speaker. attendees to bring own dishes and silverware. Mr and Mrs Joe Fjell and family Joey Beth Mr and Mrs Lloyd Fjell and Dale gathered for a Fjell family picnic at Central City on Sunday in attendance of relatives and friends.
Chris Dahmke, manager of Central Electric and Gas Company, told Mayor Bond the Northern Natural Gas rate hike set for August 7 will not take effect until August 27 or later. The increase, tied to a February 5 filing of $6.467 million with the Federal Power Commission, was delayed by a five month suspension under the Natural Gas Act. Central will apply the higher local rates only when compelled by Northern, and opposition work will continue ahead of FPC proceedings.
State Engineer L N Ress warns Nebraska highway progress could be delayed by 18 months if petitions to repeal the seven cent fuel tax succeed. He cites a $52 million delay in regular Federal aid projects and outlines potential gains and losses across Polk County area roads.

Carolyn Lewis of Denver returned to her home Wednesday morning after a week visiting her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Edwin Lewis and her great aunt Mrs Lulu Ward.
