4 H Members Win Big Awards At County Fair
Weather disrupted Friday night award ceremonies at the county fair but trophies were presented. Lora Lee Dawes won the Grand Champion Dairy Trophy. Donald Conkling took Grand Champion Sheep. Curt In Ralls and the Shelby Business Association earned Grand Champion Fat Beef. Arvin Sundberg received two Grand Champion trophies in Beef Wicing and Swine. Other awards covered a Dort Calf prize and show honors. talent contest winners received a trip to New York for the Led Mack Show auditions, with Polk County participants including Ivan McCormick and Wayne Ramsay led by John Nyberg and Bill Lavette.

Mrs. Josephine Dunning Dies After Long Illness

Lightning hits hay stack near Osceola farm
Firefighters from Osceola were called to the Clarence Carlson farm north of the city Friday morning as lightning struck a stack of hay bales during a severe storm. The blaze damaged the entire stack but left a few bales saved, with only the hay stack destroyed.

Red Cross Sets $10 Charge for Blood Program in 1957 58
Polk County Red Cross officials and area doctors met at Annie Jeffrey County Hospital to decide if Polk County would stay in the Red Cross Blood Program. A $10 per pint fee was approved to cover typing cross matching and administering costs, matching statewide hospital charges. The Local Chapter has contributed $483 toward the Blood Program with Bloodmobile visits costing about $50 to $55 each.
