The Polk County Weed District will host a weed control plots tour on Thursday August 29 meeting at the courthouse at 9 00 a m. Allan Krejci from the State Noxious Weed District will explain plots including alfalfa with 2 4 D butric acid and Dala pan and TCA for grasses and irrigation ditch weed treatments plus Benzoic soil sterilant on bindweed.
M O Johnson and wife transfer a tract in the W half of Lot 5 SE quarter SW quarter 16-14-2 to Orval C Eikenhorst and wife. Emma Kumpf Benda and husband sell 198 by 50 feet in NE quarter NE quarter 16-14-1 to Ted Pandorf. A Polk County couple faced an awkward half hour when unexpected guests were entertained by their young daughter. The couple could not recall the visitors’ names and asked the daughter to identify them. The visitors remained unaware of the couple’s confusion as the daughter finally revealed the guests’ identities.
Osceola Troop 162 boys competed in seven junior division events at York last Wednesday August 14 winning two firsts and one third. Roger Chastain took the 50 yard crawl, Arlin Keil placed third in Flutter Kick, and the 100 yard Free Style Relay team Frizzell Rodene Miley Chastain won first by several lengths.
The Valley WSCS meets at Mrs. Carl Timm’s home Wednesday afternoon August 28 at 2 30. Rebekah Lodge holds its regular meeting Wednesday evening August 28. Sociable Sals Extension Club meets August 28 with Mrs. Anna Myers at Stroms burg. Wesley Chapel WSCS hosts Guest Day Tuesday August 27 at the Methodist Church. Cub Scouts and mothers softball game set for Friday August 30 at the local diamond. Cub Scouts sell tickets.

The 4 H Homemaking Club held its Achievement Day program at the Reynold Peterson home on August 16 with mothers as guests. Members presented a program and discussed completing their record books and a Hastings fall club tour. A picnic and swimming party is planned for August 28 at Osceola Park with Jerry Urban hosting.
The Daisy Dairy 4-H Club met August 9 at the Ewald Pliefke home with Sidney Dunn presiding. Kathryn Pliefke acted as secretary. Members discussed the Seward District Dairy Show and three members Douglas Dunn Mike Cotter and Diane Scherer on the Polk county judging team. The next meeting is September 13 at the Gerhardt Lux home. Reporter Diane Scherer.
Ernest A. McKeeman died Wednesday morning August 21 at Ingleside after a brief illness. He had suffered a broken hip at the hospital last week. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Kepner Mortuary.
Osceola American Legion Auxiliary Post 91 changes from fourth Friday afternoon to fourth Wednesday evening for monthly business meetings to accommodate more members. New officers installed include President Marian Cotter and Vice President W H Norton. next meeting set for September fourth Wednesday evening.
The 25th annual Peterson family reunion was held at Buckley Park on Sunday August 18 with 23 of 52 families represented. Officers elected for 1958 include Edsel Carlson president and Lillie Chindgren secretary. Remarks note six new births since 1956 and the attendance of J G Carlson at 96 as the oldest member.
Fern Bennett and Donald R. Baer were married Friday August 16 in an eight o'clock ceremony at the Methodist Church in Osceola. Reverend Erwin A. Kiel officiated. The couple was attended by Lloyd Fijell and family guests included immediate families. Baer works as a welder at Behlens Manufacturing in Columbus. Bennett will operate Ridge Beauty Shop in north Osceola.
A large Osceola land sale featured the Julius Schuster estate 520 acres auctioned by Mills Mills & Mills for $53 995. Francis Urban bought 40 hay land acres for 4520, Donald Schott won 160 acres for 17110, and 320 acres went to Wyman for 32365. Earlier Rudolph Urban estate sold 120 acres to Francis Urban at 120 per acre and 40 acres to Arthur Gabriel for 11850 per acre. town property in east Osceola went to Roy Cox for 750.
Coach Sipes announces equipment distribution for OHS boys planning to play football at the high school building on August 24 at 6 30 p m. Practice begins August 26 with evening sessions around 6 00 p m. A complete schedule will follow in a later issue as one game night is not yet filled.
Mr and Mrs Ray Conrad and Dee Ann were dinner guests Monday evening with the Gary Conrad family to celebrate Mrs Conrad birthday anniversary. Mrs R L Clemmer, mother of Mrs Ray Conrad, also attended.

Two crashes near Stromsburg and Osceola injure drivers. Alvin Cerny’s 1951 Chevrolet truck collides with Ed and Mrs. Osmera’s car at a blind intersection. Cerny and Mrs. Osmera hospitalized with varying recoveries. A second wreck west of Osceola involves Melvin Freeze’s stock truck and an American Crystal Sugar vehicle with minor injuries. A third crash near Polk injures no one seriously.
Pvt. 2 Richard D. Miller left the States August 2 and reached Japan August 16 with Army Aviation Detachment APO 343. Pvt. Rex L. Fusby began six months of active training at Fort Leonard Wood Mo and will receive basic and advanced instruction. Duane M C Johnson of Polk was forwarded to Omaha August 14 for induction into the armed forces.
The 52nd Roberts picnic gathered August 18 at Osceola Park with three Joe Roberts attending for the first time from Oconto Nebr Osceola and Norfolk. Out-of-state guests included Horace Roberts Chicago Verna Schertz Peoria and Harold Pierson Princeton. Sixty-five relatives came from Kearney Central Greenwood Ashland Omaha Norfolk Osceola and will return next year.
