Union Pacifics centennial exhibition train arrives August 19 in Osceola with a four car display from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. near the depot. The exhibit features a museum car with 19 exhibits and replicas of historic locomotives and cars drawing large crowds across towns.
Osceola city council approved Ordinance No 298 to compel removal of dead or diseased trees. Landowners face 25 to 100 dollars per day for each violation after a 30 day removal notice, with possible imprisonment up to 30 days. The ordinance designates dead trees as a nuisance and sets enforcement procedures.
The District 19 Board of Education released the 1969 70 faculty list totaling thirty three members. Golden wedding open house announced for Mr. and Mrs. Edd Coover to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The event takes place at Polk Methodist church on Sunday, August 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. Guests are invited. no gifts requested.
Sandra Soukup daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Soukup Osceola received a Bachelor of Science degree from Kearney State College during Friday morning exercises on August 8 Mr and Mrs Soukup and family attended a noon luncheon afterward Sgt William Wozny son of Mr and Mrs Ray Wozny was discharged and returned home Thursday after a year in Vietnam stationed at Tay Ninh near the Cambodian border with indefinite future plans
School bells signal the official start of classes for students and staff in Dist. 19 on September 2. High School registration is August 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Faculty meetings are August 29 with grade and high school sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Velma Scott Elementary Supervisor meets grade teachers. Mel Olson will convene with high school staff. Two football games set for September 12 at East Butler and September 19 at Stroms burg.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sterup relocated from the house west of the Farmers Co op Oil Station to Swede Haven at Stromsburg. Mrs. Betty Sigler and Russell and Rosemary moved to Columbus the weekend of Aug 2. Mrs. Thelma Conkling and Scott moved early this week to their new home in south Osceola.
Kevin Marsh of Troop 162 completed the Second Class rank as camp closed at Humboldt Boy Scout Reservation. David Odgers earned the Swimming merit badge and was tapped for the Order of the Arrow, with tests for induction conducted during the final week.
Footings are laid for an Osceola American Legion Club addition at the rear. The project will add a 58 by 23 foot dance floor with new air conditioning and remodeled rest rooms. Legionnaires expect final completion in early winter.
Osceola junior high science and math teacher Mr Willard Jensen returns with Mrs Jensen and Chris from an eight week institute at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb Illinois. Miss Helen Swanson plans an August 16 departure for a Spain conducted tour sponsored by NSEA.
School board outlines National School Lunch Program requirements and policy to provide free or reduced price lunches to eligible children. They note subsidies cover part of the cost and urge cooperation in reporting need, with contact numbers for applicants. Beverages other than lunch will not be sold, and meal tickets are sold weekly and monthly at specified prices.
Kay Niemeier daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward H Niemeier former Osceola residents graduated with honors from Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing Omaha Nebraska on Friday August 8 She earned an Award of Honor for a GPA above 2 0 and was among 36 in the class She will work at Immanuel Hospital this winter she plans to join the Air Force Nurse Corps The Polk County Republican Women will meet August 18 at 2 pm at Laura Delfs home County Clerk Dale Frizzell will discuss balloting and voting
Mary Montgomery died July 9 in Seattle after requesting no services. Cremation occurred there and ashes were buried in Crescent Iowa. She is survived by her second husband Homer Montgomery and was preceded in death by her first husband R W Dunkle. The report notes she was a former Shelby resident.
