A Utah Osceola feature highlights local zeal boosting projects and a Union Pacific Golden Spike Centennial Expo Train stop on August 19. The train, with antique locomotives and a 100-year-old coach, tours the UP story across the West, inviting residents to tour the display car with 19 exhibits.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit the Shelby Auditorium on August 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Area residents are urged to donate before vacation. Contacts for donors include Mrs. A. H. Gutz, Mrs. Greg Andreason of Shelby and Mrs. Jerry Thelen of Osceola with phone numbers provided.
Beverly Swanson of Osceola Iowa accepted for enrollment at Westmar College LeMars Iowa in the fall. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Wieseman and plans to pursue Home Economics after attending Osceola High School and two years at the University of Nebraska. Westmar is a private accredited four year coeducational college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Staff Sergeant Dennis R. Bohne son of Mr and Mrs W W Bohne of Hoffman Route Livingston Montana is on duty at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB Thailand. Bohne a security police supervisor serves with a Pacific Air Forces unit after assignment at Francis E Warren AFB Wyoming. He is a 1951 graduate of Park County High School. His wife Dianne is daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Doremus of Polk Nebraska.
Donald Andelt a math and science teacher in Osceola public schools received the Master of Science Degree from Kansas State College at Pittsburg on a Friday. His family stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Schott in Westfall while he attended the graduation ceremony. Teresa Schott joined the family for a week in Osceola.
Osceola Pony team earns 2nd place in Little Six League after a 5 2 win over Gresham on Thursday. Shelby defeats Osceola 1 0 in a pitchers duel led by Ronquish home run. Osceola also wins over Benedict and prepares for All Star games as league concludes. Barbara Ann Senn engaged to Merwin Twarling in forthcoming wedding.
Goldenrod Saddle Club members Jim Marak Jerry Tenniges Jon Tenniges and Steve Tenniges competed at the Fillmore County Fair Horse Show in Geneva on Sunday August 3. They won first place in the Innertube Race and first in the Rescue Race with Jim and Jon. They also placed third in the Four-Abreast and fourth in the Ribbon race quarter mile and Jr Pole Bending and Jr Keyhole events.
Local contributors financed the Wednesday free Bar-B-Que at the Polk County Fair with a long list of Osceola merchants and residents. Additional support came from businesses in Stromsburg Shelby Polk York Columbus Rising City Silver Creek Grand Island Lincoln and Omaha.
A Lincoln parachutist, David Bean, broke his leg during a county fair sky diving act after misjudging his landing and landing on Don Andell's car. Bean was transported to Lincoln for treatment. Also noted is Gail Ferris graduating from Bryan Memorial School of Nursing with 56 graduates. commencement August 10 at Wesleyan Fine Arts Building.
Osceola was eliminated from the Nebraska Semipro Baseball Tournament at Wilber with a 6 to 5 10 inning loss to Lincoln Moose. Ron Kelley’s two run double capped a late comeback after Moose led 2-0 until the 7th. Osceola scored in the 9th and 10th before Kelley delivered the decisive blow.
Winners named at the Polk County Fair tractor pulling contest held Wednesday evening July 30. In Class A Hot Rod Jim Bowman Stromsburg took first with Rol land Johnson Stromsburg second. Class B Dan Vican Valparaiso first Dale Lindberg Polk second Vernon Widga Stromsburg third. Class C Jim Broadwell Gresham first Roger Broadwell Central City second Bill Juranek David City third. Class D Roger Libby Archer first Ken Libby Archer second Ray Johnson Fremont third.
The 94th annual Polk County Fair drew record crowds over five days from July 27 to 31. An estimated 3,800 to 4,000 fairgoers attended Wednesday's Bar-B-Que where fourteen hundred pounds of beef were bar-b-qued and served by county business leaders. About 1,008 watched Tuesday's Parade of Talent and roughly 2,200 attended the two-night rodeo.
Mrs Viola Boden and Duane Richards wed at St. Paul Lutheran Church Osceola on August 4 in a morning ceremony led by Pastor Paul Konig. Attendants included Andy Thonsen. Randy Boden was acolyte. organist Mrs Konig. Guests included Connie Boden Hulda Schrieber and Mr and Mrs Duane Gabel. The couple will reside on a farm south of Albion after a Canadian honeymoon.
Dick Watts won first in the Grand Island Multi Breed Horse Show riding Starla Hand a three year old Appaloosa mare. Dick Miller claimed top honors with his two year old Appaloosa gelding Mighty Wolfe. Watts also took first in Appaloosa trail riding Roco Montana Belle. Steve Johnson on leave from Sandia Base Albuquerque arrived home to his parents and plans to report Sept 22 before heading to Oakland and Vietnam.
Mrs. Rose Kresha won the Polk County ASCS exhibit guessing game at the county fair for guessing 275 008 acres. The correct acreage was 275 200 acres. The prize was a family size thermos jug bought by Polk County ASCS office employees.
