Polk County Commissioners adjourned after approving the annual tax levy showing overall reductions. Emergency Relief and General Fund levels rose slightly, while General Road Fund and Special Bridge Fund were trimmed. School district levies mostly held steady with some district adjustments and small changes in town levies.
Polk County farmers will access high-quality certified seed wheat for the 1939 40 winter crop via a campaign led by the Polk County Farm Bureau Extension Service and the Nebraska Grain Improvement Association. The effort follows last year’s farmer wheat testing program and features display bags of seed with a growers list, coordinated by Agricultural Agent Peterson. Glenn H LeDiyot new association secretary replaces Fred Siefer and comes from Nebraska City with University of Nebraska agriculture credentials.
Platte county officials report progress in collecting delinquent taxes. Sheriff A R Johnson says about 2,200 of 4,000 distress warrants have gone out. 68 individuals paid part or full amounts totaling $684. Treasurer notes $2,242 collected, 316 warrants returned due to death or missing addresses. First seizure was an automobile. Johnson adds $4,000 in delinquent personal taxes collected over two weeks from 1,600 warrants turned over by Treasurer Atkins.
The Bright Side 4-H Club met at Rose and Mary Staroscik's home on July 26 with Verona Bernt presiding. Members reviewed minutes, discussed fair dresses in blue and white, and planned the achievement program but could not complete it due to the leader's absence. A luncheon followed the program. The next meeting is set for Iona Eller's home on August 3.
Five Polk County farms from the Mary Bergman estate sold at Polk town hall for 28900 dollars total, averaging 42 60 per acre. Personal property notes and first mortgages sold for 821.00. Purchasers include Dr Strong Stromsburg. Van Ostrand Benedict. A E Kuhnel Shelby. Mrs Gilbert A Gutisch Columbus. J T Stanton Stromburg. A large crowd attended.
Richard Anderson underwent surgery last Thursday for appendicitis. Mrs. A. J. Herrman was released from the hospital last Wednesday after several days of medical care. John Metzner of Gresham, a heart patient at the hospital, died Sunday at age 71.
Waskey Chapel Club met at the Home of Miss Lula Burns with twelve members and two visitors. They set the annual picnic for August 17 in Osceola park and asked members to bring fried chicken. An Eastern Star picnic is planned for August 15 in the same park with provisions to share in the supper.
Dr Ralph Peterson returns to his former post directing the city band during a Wednesday concert while regular director Robert Strickland vacationed in Chicago. Guest musician Harry Schultz of Marquette joined the performance.
Mrs. Victor Anderson and En ma Widen and Clara Anderson visited Lincoln while remodeling proceeds at L A Erickson Jewelry. Widen departs for a Baptist assembly in South Dakota. Ray Werner hosted gatherings for several Andersons and Samuelson in Lincoln and Osceola. Herman Larson to move to James Eielson farm March 1 1940. Evelyn Hewitt resigns Todd's Cafe post and plans marriage to Hubert Allbright soon.
Liberty Local 573 FEC.U. plans a Greens Chapel meeting Friday night August 11. Jolly Workers Club hosts August 16 at Mrs. Richard Boyd’s home with Mrs. Elmer Kingberg and Mrs. Henry Smith assisting. Numerous residents travel, host, or visit relatives across Omaha Grand Island York Aurora Benedict and other towns during late summer weekend social activity.

The West Side Junior Choir of Swede Home church will present a concert Monday night August 14 at 8 oclock. Eight Sunday School boys will perform numbers and homemade ice cream with coffee will be served at regular price. Ladies Aid meets Thursday with Mrs Sward and Mrs Arthur Ekstrom hosting. Visitors include Mrs Leonard Smith and children and Mrs Harley Olseen and son from Stanton Iowa. Rev Paul Westerberg and family of Swedenburg Ia and Rev Albert Tinberg of Marshalltown Ia visited the Sward home before heading to Colorado. Olson and Elsie turned from Omaha Saturday. Mrs Petrus Nelson hosted a 12 oclock dinner Wednesday with guests including Mrs Harley Olseen Mrs Leonard Smith and children and Mrs Gust Chindgren and Lillie. Board of Administration meets Thursday at 3. Mr and Mrs Ted Fitch of Lincoln visited Walter Bush home Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Arvid Anderson of Davenport Iowa announce the arrival of a daughter Judith Katherine making them grandparents for the first time. Several Carlson relatives from Minneapolis are visiting en route to Boulder Colorado while others visit Shelby and Gresham area homes. Community notes mention travel and family health updates.
The St Andrews annual picnic on Sunday raised $1100 on the grounds though final profit awaits bill settlements. Miss Helen Henggeler of Columbus joined weekend guests in the John Janx home while Gerry Altmanshofer Glen Altmanshofer and Miss Lillian Johnson also visited. Mrs Richard Eller, recently ill, can now go out. The Messing and Markhofer families of Columbus visited the E Messing home along with Clema Henggeler. Mrs Mixdorf and Iowa children are visiting Delbert Urban’s family. Anna and Amelia Froe mel of Humphrey and Mrs Anna Seberger of Columbus were Sunday visitors.
Arnon Dover, a Polk County farmer southeast of Polk, was badly hurt Saturday when his frightened team bolted. He fell before the disc, suffering three broken bones in one foot plus cuts and bruises. Dover rode a horse home to reach town and was treated by Dr. Williams.
Dwight M. Bush of Nebraska City has purchased the Hansen Drug store. He and his wife and daughter Beverly Ann have moved to the Presbyterian parsonage and will take charge next Monday. Bush is a 1926 registered pharmacist and spent 21 years with Schwabe Drug Co. in Nebraska City. The Record welcomes him to Osceola.
Miss Lucille Shelmadine daughter of Mr and Mrs G G Shelmadine of Kearney and Leslie Marks son of Mr and Mrs O R Marks of Winslow were married at the Methodist Church in Kearney on Sunday afternoon August 6 1939 Rev John Herrman of Osceola officiated The couple were attended by Helen and Ruth Shelmadine twin sisters of the bride and Kenneth Sohl and LeRoy Marks The bride wore a white lace floor length gown and carried pink tea roses and gladiolas Mrs Marks taught in Polk County Rural Schools and Mr Marks has been music supervisor at Schuyler for two years
Polk county farmers may extend government sealed corn loans for 12 months from August 1 1939 to August 1 1940. The extension covers 625 bushels of 1937 crop and 148657 bushels of 1938 crop, both at 57 cents per bushel. Farmers delivering corn to redeem loans receive 7 cents per bushel after the 12 months. If market price exceeds loan plus carrying costs, storage credit is not paid.
Dr and Mrs A A Wurtz and family of Osceola were honored guests at a farewell picnic in the Park Sunday before their move to California. A large gathering of relatives and friends from Polk and nearby communities attended, with many named area families listed as present.
County Extension Agent Howard L. Peterson announces a farm tour to start at 10 a.m. on August 30 from the Polk County Courthouse. The itinerary covers dry year practices, sorghum and hybrid corn tests, contour farming, pasture furrows, pit silos, farm management, irrigation, hybrid corn production, electric equipment, and harvesting methods. Similar tours in other counties have drawn crowds over 5000, and Polk hopes for a large turnout.
Polk county farmers will sign the Wheat Plan for Participation in 1940 to show intent to plant within their acreage allotments and qualify for parity payments. County committee chairman Robert C. Taddiken says signing also makes growers eligible for 1940 crop insurance and parity program compliance next year.
A Lutheran church announces a Bible study series on Hebrews starting Sunday at eight p.m. America's Salvation will be the sermon topic next Sunday at 11 a.m. A Buckley Park picnic with Osceola and Swede Home leaguers follows a 5 p.m. softball game and 6:45 p.m. supper. Participants should bring covered dishes. The Luther League meets next week with guests from Genoa, hosted by the Peterson and Baker families.
A large parish delegation and band attended St. Andrews Parish annual picnic at Ellers Hall last Sunday. The ladies served a sumptuous chicken dinner with all the trim mings in family style. Entertainments and the evening dance were well received. Rev Father Mattie and parish members are commended for the well run affair.
T G Wright of Brainard and his brother H L Wright showcased Big 5 Four at Brainard milling venture. Four generations of Wrights in the milling business yield a flour gaining favor. They offer 15 dollars in cash prizes for the two best loaves of bread baked with their flour and exhibited at the Polk County Fair.
