Polk County Wildlife Club calls a gathering on Tuesday evening August 14 at 8:00 p m over the legion club rooms Osceola. Members urged to attend to discuss improving fishing and hunting in Polk county and to recruit new members with annual dues of one dollar.
A humorous travel note describes planned weeklong trip to Estes Park Colorado. The writers rave about Eikers cabin No g at Estes Park and the Fall River road area. They joke about cream related cabin questions and a bachelor’s mountain dwelling. They promise return after a brief vacation on Friday night.
Osceola seven year old Taylor Ball suffers a rare bone marrow failure requiring weekly blood transfusions. His parents and doctors urge donors with O or B type blood to help, with contact via Mrs Ball at Osceola phone 5254. The family, living on the town's north edge, includes siblings Cindy Timothy Alesia and infant twins.
Osceola woman Mrs D D Sundberg will appear on KOLN TV weather show at 10:00 p m this Thursday evening. Lloyd Green of the Central Electric Gas Co reports she recently won prizes exceeding $1 000 in a single contest co sponsored by the Gas Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Randall and three boys of Cleveland Ohio and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dunham and son of Colusa California arrived before part of this week after learning of the death of their mother Mrs. G A Randall. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Leikenhorst and Mr. and Mrs. John Darrel of Seward visited the Orville Eikenhorst home Tuesday afternoon.
Bricklayers completed their portion of the grade school building last Friday. Plasterers prep walls as muriatic acid washes finish outside bricks. Glass windows and brickwork progress this week with tile, painters, and interior lights planned. Two playgrounds and separate entrances for younger children are outlined along with landscaping, parking, and a circular drive.
Robert E. Cole son of Mrs Helen Cole of Osceola graduates from Navy recruit training on July 28 at Great Lakes Illinois. He will be assigned to the Naval Center in Norman Oklahoma after two weeks leave. DeLoss LeSuer returns from Germany after two years service with the Army and honorable discharge. Frank Klein Jr after 19 months in Japan Air Force arrives in Texas to join wife and daughter in San Antonio. Ed Klein wife and daughter Gharon visit Osceola before furlough then head to San Antonio. John Bernt 1956 Osceola High graduate begins basic training at Fort Chaffee Arkansas with RA17-470-439 1st Bn 2nd F A Tag Regt USA.
Social calendar notes two meetings with Mrs Florene Doremus on Thursday August 9 and a Beulah Cemetery Society gathering at Polk on Friday August 10. The Happy Birthday Club also plans a picnic at Osceola Park on Thursday August 9.
Last Thursday evening on the gravel road east of the school house a collision occurred between Mrs. Stanley Braithwait driving west into town and a tractor driven by Earle Miller. Mrs Braithwait sustained a cut needing two stitches. Miller escaped serious harm. his passenger, Braithwait’s young daughter, was uninjured. Estimated damage: tractor 400 dollars, Braithwait car 200.
Mr and Mrs Merlin D Simpson of Port Hueneme California announce the birth of Kathleen Louise on Friday July 27 Mrs Simpson is the former Lois Bailey and is well known here as a registered nurse at both local hospitals.
Local notice urges residents to sign rural fire district petitions by August 9. Shorty Bone and Ray Conrad hold signer sheets. firemen sought all eligible individuals but some homes were not reached. With 60 percent of signers achieved, officials encourage any interested to sign with neighbors before the deadline so petitions can be filed.
In the first game last Tuesday Johnsons defeated East Side 15 to 13 after a late rally. Johnsons led 14 to 3 by the fourth inning but watched the advantage shrink to a slim margin by the fifth. The second game featured Siglers winning 5 to 2 in a tightly pitched contest, adding two runs late to seal the result. Friday night will close the round with Andersons facing Johnsons.
Osceola stores will close at 1:00 Thursday and reopen at 5:00 to allow business people to attend the Polk County Fair. County offices in the courthouse will also close for all three afternoons of the fair.
Osceola hosted Duncan Thursday August 2 and won 3 to 1 in a low scoring duel. Bert Brazee pitched well for Osceola allowing blanks until the sixth inning while Jinx Johansen and others contributed at the plate and on defense. Duncan scored early but could not plate again as Osceola pulled away with a trio of runs late.
Weather figures from Osceola show July 1956 with only 0.60 inch of moisture across 31 days. Ten tiny rainfall breakthroughs totalled 0.10 inch, with peaks at 106 degrees on July 26 and 102 on July 30. Humidity stayed high as most days lingered in the 80s and above. Relative to July 1955, temperatures rose past 100 on eight days, while rainfall reached 2.35 inches last year. Guests of Mrs George Matheson noted in the same column include Mr and Mrs Edward Klein and Sharon of San Antonio and Mr and Mrs Herman Walter and daughters of Beatrice.

Guff’s softball beat Stromsburg 8 6 to run its record to ten wins and three losses. A local ball game mystery involved uncertain opponents Krakow or Crockwell. A cafe scene showed a family saying grace before meals. Alton Johnson, recovering from hip surgery, attended a game on crutches. The Methodist Church installed stained glass windows replacing clear panes for Sunday worship.
