The season’s largest tomato weighed one pound and was grown by Mrs. Ann McCarthy from her garden. It was entered for judging by the editor to assess both size and eating quality. The item appeared in a local page noting community gardening pride.
Two Washington County farm families receive the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award at the Washington County Fair in Arlington. Martin W. Stork of Arlington and Miss Goldie M. Iversen of Fort Calhoun are honored for farms owned by the same families since March 1885. The award recognizes 100 years of continuous family ownership. Meanwhile, DeSoto Rock Quarry work on the Bray farm near Blair resumes after a lull, with extra heavy equipment shipped from Bonner Springs Kansas to blast down to bedrock. Large Caterpillar equipment and a booster tractor are used to move dirt, with rock removal planned only after area expansion.
Two seven year olds Teddy Mayberry and Ronnie Fowler wandered from home while playing Sunday around 11 am. Fire Chief John Bateman said a search party was organized after the alarm at 3 30 pm. The boys heard a whistle and returned home thinking it was the noon whistle.

Mr and Mrs John Craven and their children Nan and Ashley departed Osceola early this week bound for western locations. Mr Craven has worked with his father George Craven in the Osceola Lumber Company for over ten years and has no definite future plans yet.
Irvin Varner of Osceola announces a farm equipment and household goods sale at the Wm. J. Herrmann farm on Wednesday August 29 starting at noon. Varner and his wife plan to move to Van Nuys California.
Coach Kenneth Sipes calls the first football practice for Monday August 27 at six pm. He notes the team lost 19 seniors but expects a solid season with remaining players and newcomers. Practice begins on the field south of the high school building.
The Julius Schuster estate land sale scheduled for August 21 has been postponed due to recent District Court litigation. Attorneys Mills Mills & Mills state the sale will occur in the near future once the litigation is disposed of.
Harvey Berglund Jr a 39 year old Seattle man died at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital at 6 20 am Wednesday August 15 from injuries on Highway 92 two miles west of Osceola. Witness Monty Rhodes 19 of Waverly Iowa said Berglund lay in the lane and was dragged several feet after the 4 45 am collision. Authorities found letters and a hitchhiking warning among Berglund s belongings and identified him through papers. Next of kin notified and no inquest will be held.
Despite rain and a power outage the 1956 Polk County Fair drew above average attendance with large and high quality 4-H and open class exhibits. A wind storm disrupted Thursday night, but entertainment continued and rumors of injuries proved unfounded. Fair Board expresses thanks to supporters.
Mr and Mrs Melvin Koss of Lincoln announce the arrival of Gregory Eugene on Saturday August 4 at Annie Jeffrey Hospital in Osceola weighing eight pounds seven ounces. Mrs Koss is the former Shirley Miller daughter of Clyde Miller. Mr and Mrs John E DeLand of Los Angeles California announce a baby girl Kathleen Ann born Friday August 3. Mr and Mrs Mervin Heimer of Shelby announce Steven Wane born Friday August 10 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital weighing six pounds. The Heimers have one other son and two daughters who stay with grandparents Jack and Mrs Malek.
Dr D D Sundberg who has worked with Dr C R Peterson here for three years ends that association and will relocate to Sterling Colorado. He was elected president of the Osceola Chamber of Commerce earlier this year and both he and Mrs Sundberg are active in the Methodist Church. The Sundbergs and their three children left Wednesday evening for their new home.
A-B Wayne L. Johnston son of Mr and Mrs Virgil Johnston left Osceola in July after enlisting in the Air Force. He is reported stationed at Lowry Air Force Base Colorado with serial number AF 17470847 and assigned to 3436 Staron Q9 347.
Hospital Auxiliary meets August 20 at 8 p m in the old hospital basement dining room. WCTU gathers August 16 at 2 30 p m in the Methodist Church fellowship room with Mrs P C Wieseman and Miss Lillian Wieseman hosting. Garden Club meeting postponed. Rebekah Lodge holds regular meeting August 22. Camera Club picnic August 19 at 6 p m at the scout cabin in the park bring a covered dish and table service. Osceola Project Club meets August 21 for outdoor cookery lesson in Osceola park bring a potato carrot and picnic service.
Funeral services for Mrs Axel Lindholm 83 were held Wednesday morning August 15 at the Funeral Home in Osceola. Rev Robert V Johnson officiated with interment at Wyuka cemetery Lincoln. She died after several weeks as a patient at Memorial County Hospital.
Funeral services are set for Taylor Ball seven son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ball at the Funeral Home Friday at two. Taylor died Wednesday at Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital after months of illness from a blood disease.

Polk County treasurer Carleton Anderson says the second half of 1955 real estate taxes becomes delinquent September 1 with seven percent interest after that date. Taxes unpaid by October 1 will be advertised. sheriff may levy personal property. Distress warrants rose from 200 to 400 year to date. Board of County Commissioners set the new levy on August 7, detailing funds and mills.
The University of Nebraska conferred 330 degrees at the summer commencement in Lincoln on Friday evening. Doane College President Dr. Donald M. Typer delivered the address. Polk County students George James Inness of Osceola earned a B S in Arts and Sciences, Wesley W. Thelander of Osceola and Allen K. Warner of Stromsburg earned Masters in Education.
