The Rolon Jones farm north of Gresham Polk county sold at a referee sale in Osceola Monday. Arnold Fredrickson purchased the property at 160 dollars per acre.
A million dollar rain fell across Polk County Sunday night, with over half an inch soaking the area. Farmers say the timely moisture came as the crop reached a critical growth stage, saving the county’s record corn crop.
Members of the J. Rinke family living near Shelby are seriously ill at St. Francis Hospital in Osceola this week from food poisoning. The illness is the first reported case of its kind in years in the community.
Gilbert Benson, a major Polk landowner, recently purchased an airplane and has begun flight training before earning a pilot license. He is now an experienced pilot seen frequently in the Polk area and is the first resident here to own a plane.
Chambers of Commerce from four Polk County towns sponsor an all day booster trip on August 15 to boost attendance at the County Fair and Veterans Welcome Home Party. Last Tuesday evening various families from Van Nuys North Platte Clarks Stromsburg Syracuse Osceola Palmer and Sioux City IA visited the Wesley Chapel area. Several guests joined for falls chores and a honey moon trip was discussed with Mr. and Mrs. Cerney returning from Great Lakes and Canada.

Weeds consume moisture and nutrients far more than crops. ragweed uses 948 pounds of water and 14.7 pounds of nitrogen per 100 pounds of dry matter versus wheat and corn needs. The Polk County Noxious Weed District is urged to organize and elect five directors to lead a county weed eradication program benefiting farmers and soil health.
Billie and Merle Ihnen, Tom, Donald, Richard and James Sterup of the Mixture 4-H Club attended a Seward camp from Thursday to Saturday, with unusually low county participation due to polio.
Mary Gayle Sigler will attend a Conservation Camp at Seward Park from August 6 to 9. She earned a prize trip from Ak-Sar-Ben for 1359 hours in the War Activity project. Nebraska state and federal agencies along with University of Nebraska will assist. Badger Clark of Custer SD will speak.
Sunny Side Club members prepare an Achievement Day program for August 8 at 8 p.m. hosted by Mrs Earl Burritt. Other clubs are coordinating demonstrations to ensure each group presents at the County Fair.

Evian Myers Amy Myers and Kenneth and Bathel were dinner guests of M R Colson and Miriam in Lincoln.
The Will Heitzman farm on the Russell Mace property is being wired for electricity. Clarence Reitz of Holdrege stayed several days visiting his ill mother at Stromsburg hospital. Mrs. Guy Smith and Mrs. Russell Mace joined Mr. and Mrs. David Smith of Clarks in Grand Island Thursday. Donna Rae Carlson visits grandmother Emma Peterson in Stromsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hemmer Joe Karges and Annetta traveled to Columbus for business. G P Mace farm buildings got a new coat of paint last week.

War veterans are urged to bring overseas exhibits to the Polk County Fair. Exhibits will be displayed in glass cases for viewing only, not handling. Veterans receive free admission at the gate with their discharge button.
A transient who visited Dr D T Kelly for treatment was suspected after a break in Sunday morning. Morphine and about sixty dollars were stolen from a desk, with other narcotics left untouched. The thief gained entry by smashing the front plate glass. FBI joined local authorities in the investigation.
Pvt Byron Torell left Columbus Sunday to return to Washington after a month on sick leave for scarlet fever. Various residents visited relatives and friends in nearby towns while several others planned trips to Oregon Iowa Denver and Nebraska. Families gather at Buckley Park and at the Newcomer home as summer activities and visits continue.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Treadway announce the marriage of their daughter Elaine to Harold R. Hise of Omaha. The ceremony was by Rev. Wybenga at Central City Presbyterian Church on July 27. The bride wore blue crepe with pink and white flowers. she is a Shelby graduate and former teacher near Omaha. Mr. Hise, a Benson High School graduate, has farmed near Benson. The couple left for a brief wedding trip to Denver and the mountains.
Mrs Katherine Koczor 64 a longtime Polk county resident died Tuesday night July 30 at St Francis Hospital where she had been a patient since April 21 She was born March 7 1882 in Polk county and married John Kaczor September 13 1899 She leaves 10 children 12 grandchildren three sisters and six brothers Funeral services were held at 9 am Friday at St Mary's church Pilsno with Rev Edward Jaworewski officiating Burial was in the parish cemetery
Miss Elsie B. Croisant and Wendell S. Spalding were wed in a single ring ceremony at the U B Church in Shelby. The bride wore lime green with pink and white floral accents. The groom, a Coast Guard veteran, served four years in the South Pacific. The couple will reside in Elk City, Nebraska after a family dinner at Stromsburg.
The Polk County Fair announces a Carnival of 30 concessions with new rides including Spitfire, Catapillar, Twin Ferris Wheels, Tilt A Wheel, Merryground, Octopus and Rol O Plane. Local families and visitors, such as Mrs. P T L Black and sons and Mrs Don Schewe of Omaha, spent days with Osceola relatives while travel plans and visits to Omaha, Denver, and Seattle are noted.
Oscar Strand a prominent Polk businessman and land owner died at Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln on Friday evening after a several months illness He was a Swedish native who came to the United States in 1881 at age 16 and settled in Saronville Neb Survivors include his wife and sons Paul Warren and Hilding of Polk and Merrill of York plus two grandchildren Obituary to follow next week.
Osceola lost 13 to 4 at Utica last Sunday with Kailey starting and Feather finishing. Next Sunday they host Aurora at the fairground diamond and Thursday they play David City under the lights.

Mr and Mrs Oscar Sundberg and Mr and Mrs Albert Sundberg were business visitors in Grand Island Monday evening.
Francis Poe 31 died in Omaha hospital after a semi truck crash on the Dodge street road about 14 miles west of Omaha Friday night. The other vehicle driver Emmett Yohey of Omaha suffered chest injuries and declined hospital care. Poe, solo in the truck, could not escape as fire engulfed the cab. his death followed burns. Burial is planned at Surprise.
