Lawrence P. Davis son of Mr and Mrs Floyd West serves as a mess sergeant in the Field Artillery at Fort Lewis Washington. He graduated Osceola public high school in 1933 and worked as a baker for three years before joining the army.
Lawrence Davis reports from Fort Lewis Washington as a mess sergeant in charge of 189 men and seven cooks. He notes the unit’s morale depends on good feeding and orderly mess operations while hinting at upcoming staff sergeant promotion and a raise.
Mr and Mrs A J Herrmann were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Mark Timm in Osceola. John Huggler returned from Omaha to a Kearney hospital for further observation. Mr and Mrs Charles Huggler and Mrs Martha Grimmond of Omaha returned from California. Dewey Sigler has served Route 3 for years and now transitions to Route 2. The new carrier D W McFadden continues service. Kenneth Richards family and Mrs T D Richards visited the Dale Richards family near Clarks. Gabel and Schott families gathered at Mrs Edmund Gabel in Shelby. Mr and Mrs Lyle Jacobs of Lincoln moved to Colorado. Mrs Jacobs was Lillian Huggler. Mrs Alfred Gabel can move about on crutches. Martha Tlamka assists at home.
The baby boy born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Earl Simon Sr has been named Larry Lee.
Polk county farmers will vote in a nationwide wheat marketing quota referendum on May 2. About 1500 eligible growers and landlords must cast ballots from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at polling sites listed by precincts including Canada City Hall and Osceola Courthouse with committees directing the process.

Clarence P. Imhof of Osceola joined the Coast Guard and was sworn in at the Omaha recruiting office on Tuesday. He previously worked in Omaha steel works shell department and attended Osceola High School. He plans to study courses for a mechanic rating while serving.
Francis DeLand son of Mr and Mrs John DeLand of Los Angeles and Miss Edith Prang of Arkansas were married in Los Angeles on Sunday April 26. The groom, a Osceola high school graduate of 1934, has lived in Los Angeles and will work at the Douglas Aircraft Corp while awaiting army call.
Miss Edith Dilsaver of San Francisco and Greens Chapel shows improvement after illness. Local residents Mrs. Howell Cox and Mr. Howell Cox visited, while Mary Fern Myers returned to Gothenburg to resume teaching. Numerous weekend visits and a farewell dinner for Lyle Johnson marked the community social scene. Several families traveled to Omaha Lincoln and Menlo Iowa for visits and care.
Mr and Mrs Glen Lindberg of Genoa visited the Nelson families. Victor Anderson and daughter Emma dined with Carleton and family in Osceola. A group from Central City celebrated the 32nd wedding anniversary at the Wren Sherwood home with several relatives present.

Victor E Thelander son of Charles and Mrs Thelander died April 22 1942 at his Stromsburg home after a three year health decline He was born July 1889 near Swede Home attended Luther College and the College of Agriculture at Lincoln He served in Seattle shipyards during World War I and returned to farm near Swede Home later moving to Stromsburg He leaves wife Hilda Falk three children Robert Ellsworth Harriet Lucille and Stanley Victor two brothers Emil Frank and Carl two sisters Nellie Anderson and Mabel Thelander and many relatives He was active in church and Polk County AE A director He is buried in Swede Home Cemetery Funeral April 26 at Swede Home Lu Lu theran Church with Pastor C A Sward officiating attendees listed from several states
Emerald Gustafson 24 son of Mr and Mrs J H Gustafson entered the army January 28 1941. He was moved from Fort Leavenworth Reception Center to Fort Riley Kansas this week and promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
