Osceola hardware man W. S. Wells has been offered a defense job and will close his hardware store immediately. A large ad in this issue announces a closeout sale starting Thursday morning as Wells must report for duty next week.
Clarence W. Headlee born near Fairview Polk County Nebraska October 38 1880 died April 14 1942 in Osceola at 61 years 6 months 11 days He married Grace Wisely February 3 1904 and they had two sons Harold W and Floyd M Grace Wisely Headlee born July 5 1885 died April 14 1942 at 56 years 9 months 9 days Both were lifelong Osceola residents and members of the Methodist Church Funeral services were at the Osceola Methodist Church and interment followed in Beulah Cemetery
Mr and Mrs Ramsey Harrington of Los Angeles California spent a week in Osceola visiting Clyde Smith and his son. They traveled to Gordon Nebraska for the funeral of W F Smith held last Sunday, the grandfather of Clyde Smith.

Miss Janet Kindiberg daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Kindberg of Denver and Sergeant Edward Klundt were married at the bride’s parents home last Saturday evening April 18. The groom is stationed at Lowrie Field and they will reside in Denver after visiting relatives in North Dakota.
Nebraska 4 H Club Week will be May 18 to 22 with judging, banquets, Capitol tour, and trips for Polk County 4 H leaders and trip awardees from Osceola Shelby Clarks and Stromsburg. Activities include discussions on crops and livestock, war emergency role, and a train trip to Omaha with stockyards quiz and a Chamber of Commerce sponsored film.
District No 18 hosts Mary Nelson and Olive McBeth guests of Mrs Hasselbalch. Osceola residents Oppliger back from south wedding dance in Columbus. PTA meeting closes term. Mrs Emma Peterson, recently employed in Polk, returns home to Stromsburg and plans a few days with her daughter Mrs Rayner Carlson. Visitors include Don Hennings from Buffalo awaiting an indefinite stay with his Parents, and Mrs Carl G Anderson from Portland visiting sister Mrs Edith Lindstedt. Various dinner guests from Lincoln Osceola Clarks and Polk gather at homes of Andersons Andresens Baker and Newman and Ellsworth Carlson with local residents.

Ransom infant Morris Hart discharged home. Victor high school play held Thursday evening.
The WSCS meets Thursday afternoon. Friday evening the Stromsburg Male Chorus presents a musical program with lunch for all attendees. Sunday services begin at 10:00 a.m. with a sermon on Religion and the World Tomorrow, followed by an 8:00 p.m. Bible Study Hour.
The Busy Bee Club organized Sunday at Helen Mae Deeter's home with nine members. Officers elected include President Margie Johansen Vice President Dorothy Deeter Secretary Margie Schmoker News Reporter Maxine Grossnicklaus. Next meeting set at Margie Johansen's home on May 27. Members on program committee Meta Deeter and Elaine Grossnicklaus. Roll call will be answered with embroidery stitches names.
The Nuquist orchard at the Nebraska School for the Blind in Nebraska City was dedicated on Arbor Day. The 134 trees include 100 fruit trees and will honor officials. Governor Griswold tops the honorees. David Norman, senior, will dedicate the first tree group to the governor and former state and territorial chiefs.
Funeral services were held in Lincoln for J Lindlie Heald 58 former Osceola resident born there Heald worked in the abstract business and served multiple terms as Osceola city clerk The family moved to Lincoln years ago Heald was connected with a Lincoln insurance firm He was a Mason Shriner and M W A member Survived by son Harvey two brothers Orlie and Ralph and sister Mrs S S Seeley of Lincoln
John Huggler fell ill and was taken to an Omaha hospital last week his wife reported his condition unchanged on Monday. Mrs Mauritz Swanson taught first aid classes in Shelby. Enoch Anderson shows improvement after weeks at home. Richard Gabriel of California, visiting with his sisters Mrs Alfred and Mrs Em ory Kuehnal, joined relatives at Fuller ton. Lawrence Albers hosted Mr and Mrs John Birkel of David City for a Sunday visit while Hollis Campain and Howard Boden, moved from Fort Robinson to New Orleans with a long distance call to their parents.
The Male Chorus of Stromsburg will give a free performance at Greens Chapel Friday at 8 30 p m. A lunch will be served later. Public notices include scarlet fever confinement for Gloria Austin and various visits and travel by local residents to and from Lincoln Aurora Marquette Bayard and Denver.
Mr and Mrs dra Irland say they will return home about May first after spending winter in Los Angeles. Their son John will be inducted into the army from California at the end of the month.
Dale Cummings 20 son of Mr and Mrs Allen Cummings enlisted in the Navy January 4 1942 at Omaha. He trained at Great Lakes and attends Naval Radio School in Indianapolis after Osceola High School class of 1938. Alton Bond also enlisted January 4 1942 at Omaha and trained at Great Lakes before transferring to Air Radio School in Seattle. He is 20, son of Mr and Mrs Hart Bond and a 1938 local high school graduate.
Funeral services for Anton Iwan Jr. 55 lifelong Polk County resident and World War II veteran were held at St. Marys Catholic Church Pilno following his death Monday at Veterans Hospital Lincoln where he had been a patient since December. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. He is survived by his wife four sons and three daughters two brothers and six sisters.
Miss Dorene Ward daughter of Mr and Mrs Irl J Ward of Silver Creek will wed Dale Frizzel son of Mr and Mrs C R Frizzel of the valley at a Thursday April 23 ceremony at the bride’s parents home. Rev H F Beebe will officiate with Mr and Mrs LaRayne Van Winkle as attendants. The bride a Silver Creek high school 1937 graduate resides with her parents. Frizzel a 1935 graduate also from Silver Creek high school and for two years has worked in the Polk County AAA office. After a wedding trip the couple will live in Osceola.
A first of its kind wartime rally for women was held at Polk High School auditorium. Polk County AAA sponsored the event highlighting farm women’s contributions to the war effort. Local representatives from church groups PTA American Legion Auxiliary and Red Cross spoke along with 135 attendees including students and county workers.
