Clyde Bull, employed at Bellwood, spent the weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Lot Bull. Katherine Cockson entertained 100 relatives and friends at a surprise dance at Johansen's hall for her parents Mr. and Mrs. F Cockson on their 25th wedding anniversary. The event featured Cockson's orchestra and refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Waller and Miss Leona drove to Des Moines and returned with Mrs. Sadie Landon visiting Shelby. Mrs. Harrys Beebe left Shelby hospital for home after a recent operation. friends wish her a speedy recovery.
The Polk County Ministerial Association will hold its May meeting next Monday afternoon at Shethby. Rev H A Taylor of Oscaola will present a paper titled The Origin of Sin and Rev F R Peterson of Swede Plain will lead a discussion on The Place of Sin in Our Preaching. Plans aim to hold the June meeting at the Park in Stromsburg.
Mayor Scott vetoes a ballot measure to ask voters in the April 6 1926 spring election whether to grant a franchise to the Sutton Electric Light Company and the Diesel Engine Electric Company. The plan would let Sutton acquire a self funding diesel electric light plant without bonds, funded by earnings.
Mrs Nordstrom and Mrs Liggett drove from York on Tuesday to spend the day with Mr and Mrs Geo Humphrey.
Mrs William Conway a resident of York County and later near Gresham Nebraska died aged 65 years 11 months and 28 days after a life in Allamakee County Iowa and Nebraska She is survived by her husband son and six daughters with other relatives Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church and burial followed in Shelby Catholic cemetery
Mrs. Millie Daniel spent a week in Omaha visiting friends and relatives. Guy Mace and wife of Osceola spent Sunday at G. P. Mace. Hunter Evangelistic meetings drew many at Genoa Sunday evening. Chas Hastings and wife weekended in Kearney last week. Mrs. Meyers returned Friday after Kansas visit with her poorly father. Mrs. Geo Horst and son Roy of Lincoln visited Sunday. Mrs. Merrit Graham and Geneva Fineey of Clarks visited BE. Fineey parents Thursday. Geo. Mace and wife visited Wm. Dake Tuesday evening.
J. C. Thomas visited from Ulysses on business Tuesday. On Monday the Seniors held a sneak day driving to Grand Island for their annual spring picnic.
John A B Goff born 1858 West Virginia died April 26 1926 at his Shelby Nebraska home aged 68. He married Mary Harbert in 1920 and is survived by his wife a son Simon Goff of Burnt House West Virginia and three sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were held April 27 at the United Brethren Church Shelby with burial in Graceland Cemetery.
The Golden Rod Sewing Club held its first meeting last Saturday afternoon at Swede Home Hall with Mr. Adair from Osceola assisting. Fourteen members enrolled and Miss Myra Fredrickson named local leader. Officers elected for the next season include Miss Adeline Fredrickson as President, Miss Helen Willits as Second Treasurer, and Miss Thelma Willits as Vice President. Plans for club week include sending two delegates. Refreshments were served by Misses Myra Adeline Fredrickson and Vera Johnson after adjournment. The next meeting is set for May 8.
Co. M Blevins filed as a candidate for county treasurer on the Democratic ticket. J C Johnston is absent this week attending land interests in the northern part of the state. Myrtle Brown enjoyed the weekend with Omaha friends after meeting old acquaintances who motored from Florida. Mrs Christopher Timm recently returned from Alliance after a five weeks visit with daughter Mrs Fred Shermadine, accompanied by Mrs Lillian Sickles from Gothenburg. Mr and Mrs Fred Bechtelheimer hosted relatives from Norfolk. They were the family of Joseph Joassisen, Polk County homesteaders forty years ago. Robt Knapp advertised a sale of his personal effects for Thursday, planning to return to his home in the East.
The Merry Workers meet this afternoon with Mesdames Jessie Marquis and Daisy Anderson as hostesses. The Business Women's League enjoyed a dinner at the Hotel Rapp Monday at 6:30 with many in attendance. Miss Signe Samuelson invites each member to bring a guest to a "kid" party at her home May 10, please report attendance and bring 25 cents.
The Brotherhood Bible Class at Eden Baptist Church Stromsburg reports record turnout with 45 men on April 4 and 47 on April 25. Lawrence Peterson serves as president and Rev A W Lyons teaches. Class meets Sundays 10 to 11 a m.
Polk County Farm Bureau members will host a Fun Feed at the Methodist Church basement in Osceola on Thursday May 6 at 6 30 P M. Planned there will be entertainment and refreshments with an interesting toast list featuring C B Steward Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation secretary and George Boomer Extension Service College of Agriculture Lincoln Neb.
The Baptist Missionary Society meets at Mrs Esther Browns home next Wednesday afternoon with assistants Mrs Roy Erickson and Mrs John Deland. The Birthday Club of South Osceola met in April at Mrs George Andersons home with six members and four visitors. Final lessons on Convenient Kitchens and Efficient Utensils were shared and an elaborate lunch served. The club plans to attend County Achievement Day in Stromsburg on May 4. The Biden Wees were entertained at Mrs Albert Timm’s Thursday afternoon with guest Mrs P E Sickle of Gothenburg. The Record installed a new type cabinet built by Osceola High School student Leonard H Fellows. A joint Odd Fellows and Rebekahs meeting will be held at Rising City with seventeen lodges expected and a 15 minute program from each. The High School membership committee enjoyed a recreation trip to Buckleys park in Stromsburg and a visit to A C Morrill’s home for a historical collection. Wind damage last Saturday destroyed several windmills fences and mail boxes. Earl Johnson leaves for La Junta Colorado to improve health and visit grandparents J N Johnson and Mrs G L Johnson. Tune in Friday April 30 for an educational program on poultry care from M C Peters Mill Co and Duncan Produce Co Osceola Nebraska. Clyde Peterson drove to Lincoln to visit his wife and returned with top of car torn off by heavy winds.
Longtime Polk County resident Josiah Locke died Sunday at his Osceola home from age related complications. Born April 5 1841 in Falmouth Maine he served as a private in the 11th Maine Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and later moved across Iowa Nebraska and Minnesota before settling in Osceola in 1896. He was active in G A R and Masonic circles and is survived by a brother and two sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church with Masonic rites.
Miss Anna Watts visited Stromsburg and spent Monday with Mrs. Henry Zang. Families of Brubaker and Smith, with Pauline Goodale, visited Lincoln and Palmyra. Osceola visitors enjoyed a James Davis program. Stoner Club met with Daisy Zang. Kitchen Convenience Project discussed. Several locals welcomed new babies and prepared for moves to Vancouver and Tifnels. County workers graded roads by R. C. Dunn.
Boys and Girls of Polk County prepare for a five day visit to the Agricultural College in Lincoln from May 31 to June 5. Members listed include Rolland Fredrickson Harold Johnson Marcus Gustafson Carl Gustafson Ralph Allison Keith Kinberg Hasel Stevens Julia McClure J H Gustafson A C Morrill and Alolf Kresha. Additional members may enroll with County Agent Adair.
Oscar Jones and family visited at Ceresco Nebraska on Sunday. G Menting home hosted Mr. and Mrs H P Dey Clarence Wilson John Mentink of Gresham and Mr and Mrs Victor Heinze of Thayer. E Headlund attended a church play at Stromsburg Thursday. Mrs Frank Swanson brought cake and oranges for Pauls 12th birthday at Pleasant Corner School.
