Earl Mentink of Osceola serves a second term in the Navy as a First Class Water Tender in charge of seven seamen. His present address is the USS Dixsie at Pearl Harbor.
Brigadier General Guy N. Henninger warned Nebraska agriculture and industry that the summer draft rate will not drop. He explained local boards will tighten occupational deferments, requiring irreplaceable, essential workers in farming and critical industries. He urged planning for fewer draft-age workers and emphasized using dependents, physically unsuitable men, women, and older youths to keep farms and industry running.
Mrs. Fred Randell hosted a Sunday dinner with Mr and Mrs Aug Pehrson Elmer Pehrson Ansel Pehrson Orville Fox Rudolph Swanson Bertha Swan from Shelby joined. Nearby visits included Ortha Watts celebrating a 16th birthday and various relatives spending time at Gleim Watts McKeag Luft Hen dricks and Cadwell homes.
The beef club met first at Neal Hasselbach’s home on March 27 to discuss cattle and receive new materials. Lunch was served by Mrs. Hasselbach. The second meeting at Ervin Hecker’s home on April 10 discussed cattle purchases and was followed by lunch by Mrs. Hecker. The next meeting is planned for May 1 at Myron Hecker’s home.
Clarence Headlee 61 and his wife 56 died within minutes of each other at an Osceola home early Tuesday. He had been hospitalized for weeks after a heart attack. she died shortly after learning of his death. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church.
R. W. Dunkle, 55, Shelby druggist, died suddenly of a heart attack in his store Saturday evening April 11, 1942. Survived by wife Mary E. Dunkle, brother Walter of Council Bluffs, and sister Viola of Gary Indiana. Funeral April 14 at Woodring Chapel Council Bluffs, burial Crescent Iowa.
Albert Ryan of Osceola was named chairman for Polk county in the nationwide USO war fund drive. The county quota is $300, as the Nebraska campaign targets $148,000 for the state. The USO unites YMCA YWCA Salvation Army National Catholic Community Service Jewish Welfare Society and National Travelers Aid Association to provide off-duty hospitality for American servicemen.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service met with Mrs. A. J. Herrman and guests. May meeting set with Mrs. Floyd West. A grandson born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Nabb of Omaha. Visitors include Mrs. Henry Stolley and Hans King of Omaha. Merle Dawes enjoys a new baby girl, Lara Lee. Sheltering plants planted by A. F. Nyquist. Osceola Farmers Union Local held a Monday meeting.
About 664 Polk county men between 45 and 65 will register on Monday April 27. Registration runs 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Osceola Draft Board Office Stromsburg Public Library Polk I O O F Hall or Shelby City Hall. Men must be 45 by February 16 1942 but under 65 on April 27 1942.
At a recent Osceola Womans Club meeting Mrs. Maude Nuquist installed officers for the coming year. Officers include President Ray L. Cruise, Vice President Carleton Anderson, Treasurer Myron Johnson, Secretary I. J. Merrick. The group met at Mrs. Clyde Smith home with several hostesses assisting. The next meeting is May 4 at Mrs. G. W. Morgan’s house for the annual breakfast.

A county meeting called by the USDA War Board discussed the farm labor situation in Polk County. The group found the current labor shortage not acute but likely to worsen in summer. A farm labor committee was formed with Arthur Nelson Enoch Ekstrand John Staroscik Reuben Anderson and Ray L Cruise. Robert C. Taddiken will chair. The aim is to set up town offices to match available help with farmers needing workers.

Mr and Mrs Lyle Ostberg and Ramona return to Rock Island Illinois after visiting here. Several Sunday visits include the Bodine Glad and Nyberg families, Donald Hanquist of Grand Island, Esther Berggren of Stromsburg, Paul Strand and families, and guests from Hastings. Platte Valley Ministers held a conference at the local Baptist Church.
Emerald Gustafson 24 son of Mr and Mrs J H Gustafson enlisted January 28 1941 transferred from Ft Leavenworth Reception Center to Ft Riley Kansas. This week he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
John Stewart Barr born August 5 1850 in Highland County Ohio died April 12 1942 at his daughter's home near Osceola aged 91 years 8 months 7 days. He lived in Marion County Iowa as a youth and married Anna Ferris September 6 1872. Survived by eight children including J Warr Shelby Rose Sullivan Colorado Springs Ella Knight Osceola Steve Corbett Osceola Alice Scott Lingle Hugh Lockard Hastings Vernie Kuntzelman Shelby Lulu Barr Osceola. 21 grandchildren 15 great grandchil dren. Funeral April 15 at the Osceola Methodist Church conducted by Rev A W Lapthorne.
Mrs Olga Charlotta Anderson age 69 dies at home after four years illness. Born November 12 1872 in North Easton Massachusetts daughter of the late Martin Olson she lived in Swede Home community and was a long time member of Swede Home Lutheran Church. Surviving are four children Edgar Edwin Gladys Brodin and David. one brother Frank Olson. sisters Mrs Selma Younglund and Mrs Lottie Calvin. five grandchildren and several inlaws and relatives. Funeral services were held at home and church with Pastor C A Sward officiating and burial in Swede Home Cemetery.
