All signs indicate spring arrival with birds active and gardeners busy. Only 0.04 inches of precipitation in the past week, rain on Wednesday. Highs reached 76 on Friday and Saturday. the week’s low was 31 on April 13. Dates listed show temperatures from April 13 to April 19 with highs mostly in the mid to upper 70s and nightly lows in the 30s.
Parents should register kindergarten-age children by calling 747 8121 or 747 2091 or writing to Mrs Leonard Mrkvicka with the child's name and birth date. A spring meeting for mothers with upcoming kindergartners will be held. Separately, the Nebraska Department of Labor Division of Employment with the Nebraska Beet Growers Association and Great Western Sugar Co. recruit sugar beet field workers from May 15 to June 15, with weeding in late June and early July. Local and state workers are urged to apply, and domestic beet workers may be recruited from other areas. Contact the Division of Employment to register and to refer workers. keep any prearranged working agreements and sign up for other beet field work when not needed by the initial employer. SHELBY JUNIORS WILL HAVE PLAY APRIL 27. The junior class play “Skinned Alive” will be April 27 at Shelby High School Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Tickets at the door or from any junior, 85 cents.

Wilson wrote a musical comedy Bells of Iowa State called Hey Where's Nebraska, praised by show people though he cautions the work is still on paper and far from produced.
The Record plans to sell subscriptions in Shelby. High school students unaffiliated with the school will earn commissions on new subs and gift subscriptions within the area. Nearly 100000 trees will be planted statewide with 52000 by 40 private groups in a youth led effort including 4-H Future Farmers of America Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. An additional 47000 trees and shrubs will be planted on state lands at 35 sites for recreation and wildlife management.
Dianne E. Richter of Shelby daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Richter has been awarded the President s scholarship to Sacred Heart College Wichita Kans She is a senior at Aquinas High School David City and plans to major in elementary education.
Osceola Volunteer Firemen announce their annual dance on May 12 at King's Ballroom Shelby to raise funds for the department. The letter to residents asks for donations to support operations, noting 25 volunteers work 24 hours a day year round with no pay and detailing fire duties and training.
The District Music Contest will take place in Aurora on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, featuring 31 participating schools in classes B C and D. Judges include Larry Lusk University of Nebraska piano Harrison Boughton Wichita State University James Hershberger Manhattan State University James M King Hastings College and Robert Marshall Nebraska Wesleyan. A pre nuptial party honored Miss Carol Daum with a bridal shower hosted by Mrs Leroy Rhodes and co hostess Mrs Calmer Dunn. twenty guests attended.
