Kenneth Mentink, owner of the Osceola Locker, has purchased the Duncan Lockers from Ed Gerber. Operation and services at both plants will continue as before, according to Mentink.
Craig Monson set county and school marks at last week’s county meet as bad early season weather kept athletes off practice fields. The Polk County Recreation Assn. has passed the Hundred Barrier with a strong drive for 28 charter memberships, and organizers invite locals to join.
Osceola high school band earned the top Class C rating at Aurora on Saturday. Director Gene Cappen said judge Robert L. Marshall of Nebraska Wesleyan awarded only one such rating among 10 Class C schools and the band also rated superior in sight reading. He expressed pleasure at the result.
Polk County Home Extension presents its annual Spring Tea on Monday May 3 at Osceola Lutheran Church with Nebraska Centennial theme featuring speaker Mrs Jim Wilson of Polk who will show Polk County slides. Osceola High School musical numbers and home extension council scholarship award plus plant slip sale and cookbooks on sale accompany the event. Bond report shows Polk County buyers spent 19357 in March on Series E and H bonds, totaling 122066 for the first quarter, 25.5 percent of the 1965 county quota.
Augusta Cecelia Messing, born Polk County October 20, 1888, died April 23, 1965, in Osceola. She married Frank Joseph Messing May 10, 1911, at St. Andrew's near Osceola. they farmed near Shelby and later lived at Samaritan village. Survived by husband and seven children, funeral at Sacred Heart Shelby. Also notes card party at Dick Eller home and births in the area, plus Osceola music events and contest ratings mentioning local students and teachers.
Ray Warner eighty died in Lincoln April twelve after retiring from a farm near Stromsburg for thirty years and living in Lincoln twenty two years. Survived by wife Esther two daughters Merle and two sisters five grandchildren and a brother. Funeral April fifteen at Stromsburg Baptist church with Rev. Heydon and Rev. Sherwick. interment Stromsburg Cemetery.
Amanda Josephine Younglund 82 daughter of Andrew and Hannah Younglund born October 22 1882 on a Stromsburg area farm died April 12 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital Osceola She married Albert Youngquist September 5 1906 had three children Calmar Evangeline and a child who died in infancy Survived by husband two children nine grandchildren and brother Melvin of Hillsboro Oregon Services were at Covenant Church April 15 Rev John Carlson officiating Pallbearers were Arthur Verner Ahjlquist Kenneth Hanson Wilmer Anderson and Carl and Joe Sundberg
The 1965 Cancer Crusade wraps up as residents may be contacted by neighbors or precinct and county chairs. Creighton University and the University of Nebraska split 97,759 for research and education with funds allocated to public and professional education, patient services, and fundraising. Osceola groups offer free school and club films, while Cub and Boy Scouts assist Lions with a door to door eyeglass drive. New Oscecolans Jerry Krieger and John Iske join highway patrol duties. Krieger, from Lincoln, and Iske, from Gretna, begin six month probationary assignments with patrols and family updates.
Lions Club meeting featured three young women who traveled the world. D Gatch of Scottsbluff and Mona Mues of Cambridge shared IFYE programs to Uruguay and India while Audrey Ranwell from Osceola High spoke about South Africa. President Rev. Robert Turner presided.
The Polk County Chamber plans to mobilize many members to help cook and serve at the county fair barbecue. Secretary Ray Conrad asks businesspeople from four towns to participate. The group also targets the June 1 Old Times celebration in Osceola and discusses apparel like orange corduroy and vests for display.
The Polk County Education Association held its last regular meeting April 20 at Shelby High School with spouses and seniors attending. Officers for the coming year were elected: President Lawrence Theis Osceola. Vice President Wesley Fredrickson Stromsburg. Secretary Orpha Fysell Osceola. Treasurer Marcia Anderson Stromsburg. Dr. Allen Burkhardt, superintendent and president emeritus of Norfolk Public Schools and Junior College, spoke.
Nearly 130 women bowlers from Lorre Lanes closed the season with a 6:30 p.m. banquet at Kings Ballroom in Shelby. Mrs Gene Scow entertained with solos as Peggie Mills led a business meeting. New officers named include Nora Snodgrass president Pat Miller vice president Mary Sterup secretary Olive Sterup sergeant at arms Lydia Johnson.
Osceola sweeps the Polk County meet edging Shelby and Polk under sunny skies. Craig Monson claimed two weight events and set a county discus record while also breaking a 13 year school record in the shot put. Stromsburg finished last with strengths shown in freshman relay efforts.
Osceola PTA holds season finale at Jeffrey Elementary on Wednesday May R with guest speaker Mrs Curtis Flodman addressing the History of Polk County Schools and Teachers. She notes Wesleyan College began in Osceola and Stromsburg once housed a normal training college, prompting audience questions.
Petrulis of Omaha cited for night speeding 65 mph with 11 dollar fine and 5 dollar costs. Myron G. Hiemer of Shelby fined 11 dollars plus 8 dollars costs for speeding in zone limits. Dorothy Runquist of Osceola fined 10 dollars plus 5 dollars costs for no operators license. Thomas C. Shadley of Council Bluffs charged with day speeding 75 mph with 11 dollar fine and 5 dollars costs.
