Voters rejected the 430000 school board proposal 1470 to 1209 for a larger school system. The community building bond failed by a few votes 102 in favor 87 against, producing about 54 percent support and not reaching the 60 percent requirement.
Over a dozen residents attended the Tuesday city council meeting to protest a planned chemical plant amid concerns of ammonia fumes and smoke. The Dakota County Star notes the dispute echoes earlier city sales and development battles.

A baby boy named John Richard was born Friday April 15 at Osceola Hospital to Mr and Mrs James Malek. A daughter arrived April 14 to Mr and Mrs Waldo Jarmin of Edson Kansas, with grandparents listed as Mr and Mrs Glen Richards. Constance Patricia was born April 15 at St Marys Hospital in Columbus to Mr and Mrs Robert Lux of Shelby.

Brick masons have returned to the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital project this week. Contractor D L Moffitt expects the structure to be enclosed within a month as interior work follows. Utilities have reached the site and a new four inch main is being extended. The building’s exterior will show rapid changes in coming days.
Osceola hosts stock car races this summer in partnership with the Nebraska Stock Car Club. Eligible drivers must meet vehicle, engine age, and safety standards, with inspections enforced to ensure driver and public safety. The first race is Sunday May 29, with monthly events, proceeds going to fair expenses. Albert Ryan handles entry details and NCSC rules. A barricade is being built in front of the grandstand to meet safety requirements.
Mrs Ellen Branting Kopera aged 51 of Omaha died April 18 at Osceola hospital after months of illness. Funeral services are set for 2 30 p m Thursday at the Lutheran Church Osceola with burial at Swede Home Cemetery.

The building committee of the Osceola Methodist Church chose a medium buff brick from Sioux City Brick and Tile Company for the new church. The first car is due by June 1. Dismantling of the old structure progresses as contractor D L Moffitt says wrecking firm expects completion by next week and starting the new church once cleanup ends.
Five Polk County students from the University of Nebraska were honored for superior scholarship at the 27th annual Honors Convocation Tuesday morning. Named from Osceola were Caroline S Rhodes Ronald D Swanson and John W Mills. Also honored were Jacklyn M Stanton Stromsburg Norman T Micek Shelby. Very Rev Carl M Reinert of Creighton University gave the address What Price Higher Education while Chancellor Clifford M Hardin presided.
The City tests show the new southern well with zero bacteria and about 99.8 percent pure water. The 221 foot gravel packed well, five blocks south and two blocks west of the square, now feeds the mains and boosts south side pressure. Mayor Bond says it should relieve supply concerns except in emergencies. City workers prepare the building forms for the pump facility.
Osceola Volunteer Fire Department members led by Chief Mark Gustafson attended a three day fire school in Grand Island joining more than 800 volunteer firefighters from across Nebraska. The event featured lectures panel discussions live burning demonstrations and equipment displays with topics on toxic gas hazards film demonstrations and improving firefighting efficiency.
Mayor Fred Bond announces Clean Up Week from April 25 to 30 to improve the city’s appearance. Residents are urged to put rubbish in curbside containers for the city truck to collect, with burnable items kept separate by property owners.
The Golden Wedding observance of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Luft will be held at Pierce Chapel Church on Sunday April 24 from two to five o'clock. The Lufts, former Polk County residents, now live at Palmer Nebraska.

Reverend Homer Bollinger, chair of the building committee, announces a fund drive to raise the remaining 40 000 dollars for the church building. With 50 000 dollars on hand, pledges and forthcoming contributions are expected to fill the balance as the construction starts.
Funeral rites for Ben Treadway are set for two o clock Friday at the Methodist Church in Shelby. He was 78 and died Tuesday afternoon April 19 in a Columbus hospital.
Osceola’s music department under Duane Johnson earned several superior and excellent ratings at the District Music Contest in Fullerton held April 15 and 16. Jeanne Inness won superior in French Horn and piano, Jona Bernt in girls high voice, Thomas Husak in Bass Horn, and the Girls Glee Club. Excellent ratings went to Anne Schott in piano and multiple groups and players including Marilyn Triba, Steve Sigler, and the mixed chorus and band.
Thomas Husak, a high school senior, is chosen to perform his bass horn solo at the University of Nebraska Fine Arts Festival on April 23. He will be accompanied by Mary Anderson and joins auditions open to top high school musicians for music school entry and critique. Husak previously played with the National Future Farmers of America Band at the organization's October convention in Kansas City.
St Vincent's Altar Society held its regular meeting at the church parlor. Mrs Otto Brabec was chosen as delegate to the Deanery meeting in Seward on May 1 and Mrs Ed Schott to the Dioscean Convention in Lincoln in May. A bake sale and luncheon were planned for May 7 with Mrs Gerhardt Lux and Mrs Duane Schmoker in charge.
Misses Aurora and Margit Anderson entertained guests Tuesday afternoon to honor their mother on her 82nd birthday anniversary at a social coffee party.
The 1955 softball season starts Tuesday night April 26 at the Fairgrounds field with a double header. First game Maleks vs Kepners at 7:30 p.m. and second High School vs Crouses. Additional teams include Siglers Johnsons East Side and Andersons.
Osceola WCTU met in the Lutheran Church on April 14 for an all day session led by President Lula Hendrickson. Mrs. Bredbeck of Omaha spoke as child welfare secretary, sharing information on the work. Barbara Oberg played flute, Mrs. Harry Brazee led devotions, and solos by Mrs. Otto Nelson and Miss Bernt with Judy Koehler on piano. A covered dish lunch with desserts and coffee was served.
Softball play begins April 26 at 7 30 with eight teams this year up from six last year. Players contribute a dollar at season start, easing finances versus past hardball days.
