National Air Mail Week Observed in Polk County

May 15 to 21 designated by the Post Office to celebrate the air mail anniversary and promote usage. Osceola selected as a stop on May 19 with airmail pickups planned from Grand Island to Osceola and onward to Columbus, Albion, Fullerton, Central City, and back. Local groups organize landing field and publicity. air mail postage is twice ordinary and faster.

County Extension Meetings Planned Next Week

The county agent’s office schedules three extension meetings in the county. Lloyd Vance leads poultry discussions April 25 at 2 p m in Stromsburg High School and 8 p m at Osceola Court House. Guy Davis trains 4-H club leaders April 26 at 8 p m. Alegra Wilkens aids 4-H girls clothing leaders April 29 at 10 a m at the county court house. Samuelson Harless wedding held April 14 in Lincoln.

City Employee Charged For Altering Auto License Plates

Frank Kohout, a Schuyler city employee, was charged in a Colfax county complaint signed by County Attorney Lloyd L. Pospishil. He pled guilty before County Judge Wm. H. Roether, receiving a $25 fine plus $7.16 costs after altering 1936 plates to resemble 1988 plates using solder. He was detained by Sheriff Ernest DeBower. A plate records system is kept in the sheriff’s office and future violators will be apprehended.

Grasshopper Control Group Organized in County

County precinct leaders met at the Agricultural Agent office to form a grasshopper control association. Guilford Bryan serves as chairman with August P. Anderson as vice chairman and Elton Berck as secretary-treasurer. A central mixing plant will supply bait to three precincts per day, with a mechanical distributor built for demonstration. Bait arrives between now and May, targeting hatchlings in April and early May.

Grade Operetta The Green Cheese Set For Next Week

Weekend Visits and Moves in Shelby Area

Miss Cathryn Longacre and sister Miss Elizabeth visited Shelby with Rev. and Mrs. S. W. Longacre over Easter weekend. The Dexter couple from Lincoln planned a Denver move for Mr. Dexter after Easter. Alma Hayhurst visited parents in Shelby while resuming duties in Grand Island. The Zedichers drove to Seward for Easter and plan Portland Oregon visits. Several others traveled to Omaha and Lincoln for family gatherings and work, including the Jensens moving to Huston Texas. Melvin Wills substituted as mail carrier on Route 1, taking over duties Saturday.

Efforts to Form Osceola Baseball League

Osceola, with talks from Osceola Baseballs and other towns, seeks a six team league including Columbus Platte Center Genoa Duncan Stromsburg and Osceola. A subscription drive raised about 200 dollars but Columbus and Platte Center cannot be counted on, leaving the league status uncertain as the season nears.

Amusement lovers will see Ned Albert's adaptation of Mary J. Holmes' Tempest and Sunshine. The Senior Class at the High School Auditorium presents Friday May 6 with a southern home setting near Lexington Kentucky.

Mr and Mrs George Inness and son of Osceola hosted dinner for Dr and Mrs M D Strong and family. Maurice Strong returned from Los Angeles. Berniece Lind visited Moline Illinois and attended a nurse graduation. Mrs Margaret Scharman returned from a two week southern trip with friends. Fairview reports Dr William McCormick and wife of Blue Rapids Kansas visited relatives here over the past week. Polk Honored On 80th Birthday Anniversary

A family gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Chas Wright home marked Mrs. Williams eightieth birthday with relatives and gifts. It also celebrated Dwayne Allison eight teen birthday. Attendees included the Williams and Knerr families and others from Stromsburg Adams and Lincoln areas. Refreshments of ice cream and cake followed afternoon visits.

Women Unite for Fourth District Convention at Stromsburg

The Fourth District federated Women’s Clubs met April 19 and 20 in Stromsburg. Speakers included Ralph G. Brooks Wymore on Nebraska the White Spot and Dr Joseph E Alexis Nebraska on International Relations. A banquet luncheon installation and reception followed with Stromsburg Chamber hosting.

Obituary James Martin

James Martin born April 23 1864 in Marsaras Vania Sweden and died April 13 1938 at age 73 in Swede Home Polk County Nebraska. A brick mason who helped build many local structures and the Swede Home Church he married Augusta Lindeblad in 1887 and celebrated fifty years of marriage last October. Funeral services were conducted from his home and Swede Home Church with burial in Swede Home Cemetery.
