County Spelling Contest Yields Town and Rural Champions

Osceola High School hosted the annual spelling contest on April 9 with 3rd to 8th graders. Dick Mills won the town title and Glenna Berek the rural title. both advance to county and broader competitions in Council Bluffs and at the state fair.

Osceola Teens Selected for Lincoln Civil Government School

Osceola High School juniors David Rutter and Tom Moore are chosen to attend an eight day civil government school in Lincoln, Nebraska. About 250 Nebraska students will study government through practical roles as representatives judges and senators at the University of Nebraska. The Osceola American Legion post and Osceola Rotary Club will fund the pair.

Residents Celebrate Visits and New Twin Babies in Shelby

Mrs. and Mrs. George Ballenger plus children visited relatives in Shelby over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Andrews and family from Walden Colorado visited Shelby. Chalmer Selden and Rising City residents welcomed twins at the Shelby hospital on Friday April 8, a boy of four pounds eleven ounces and a girl four pounds thirteen ounces. A birthday surprise for Mrs. Watkins occurred at O A Watkins home. Those visiting from afar included Henry Rood family of Meade and Neal Hill family of Hastings. Hossacks from Lincoln visited relatives after attending a funeral in Fullerton. Anna Merrick returned from Fremont after a few days with Dr A J Merrick. Charles E. Hastert and family returned from three months in Florida. Lawrence Crow val’s baby home from University hospital in Omaha. United Brotherin church ladies raised 55 dollars at a Strain’s hall bazaar and waffle supper.

The Presbyterian Church hosts Sunday School at 2 45 p m and Easter services at 3 30 p m led by Rev Oliver Proett. The Merry Workers meet Thursday afternoon with Jennie Welch Nettie Ball and Esther Brown on the committee. Women Own One Fifth Of Polk County Farm Land

Tax records show women hold 53 407 acres in their names across Polk County and operate 1 800 farms, while 370 tenant farmers lease from women. About half of the women landowners live outside the county. John Oberg Jr has accepted the pastorate at St Paul s Lutheran Church Osceola and will begin in July after completing studies at Augustana Seminary Rock Island Illinois.

Sleet Storm Strains Iowa Nebraska Light and Power Crews

R A Graham district manager notes last week’s sleet storm was the worst in 10 years, disrupting wire communications and delaying permanent repairs. Linemen worked up to 35 hours with little sleep as radio stations aided emergency dispatches and towns cooperated to restore essential service.

Polk County Sunday School Convention Plans

Plans are nearly complete for the Polk County Council of Christian Education annual convention at Wesley Chapel Church on Sunday April 24. Rev. J. C. White of Lincoln will speak at each session. Local people will give talks and a musical program is being arranged. All Sunday School workers and teachers in the county are urged to attend.
